Telander deserved to be treated like garbage, as the man treated both the listeners and his coworkers like garbage. He couldn't handle dealing with the "common" fan; so he took and had "HIS" rules (no nicknames when someone called in, couldn't be bothered to listen to the topic being discussed, and is a complete jock suck who has clung to living next to Halas Hall as grounds to be considered a "good" sports reporter for 20+ years.)
I'm certainly not a fan of Telander but that doesn't stop me from appreciating his skill as a writer, something that is sorely lacking from Chicago's sports pages these days. His Baby Boomer penchant for seeing sports as a metaphor for or reflection of society at large aside, there's no doubt the man can write. That he's been allowed to indulge himself by writing about such things as his daughter's Dartmouth swimming team is something that should be laid at the feet of his editors.
As far as not dealing with the "common fan" goes, that's a major component of B&b, which is clearly the most beloved show in this forum and perhaps in all of Chicago sports radio. In fact, if you're going to do "Serious Radio" and talk constantly about child rape and CTE, I think it would be good practice not to take a call from "Virgil Livers' Left Nut".
Telander, much like Mike Ditka, USED to be good. Now he makes a living on his previous reputation. It's been years (even before his run at WSCR) that I felt Telander wrote anything I would say was skilled. That's part of the reason his daughter's swim team columns get past the editors, because, who would dare edit someone as talented and as well respected as Rick Telander?
Hood might of burned his bridge (following North over to Webio certainly didn't help his career) but Telander is a pompous ass who should of retired years ago, so he could go spend time with his family and watch his daughter swim at Dartmouth.
