It's okay.

I just don't know what's more insulting - the fact that you said Naperville scum or that the thought even crossed your mind that I might be a Brewers fan. :)

I dont think WGN could offer a rich multi platform package like CBS did. Mitch fell into a pile of poop and came out smelling like roses with the timing of this Cubs deal.

Without knowing every move the guy ever made, I believe he was GM of the LOOP during the HEyDay and he ahs parlayed that into many different high paying jobs. I remember when he got AOl Sports to pay him tons of cash as well. I think then WMAQ paid him? Then WGN?

Since 1989 I think his Losses for outnumber his wins....but could be wrong.

Pretty sure he made some generational wealth on that AOL deal.

What other platforms? Having Len Kasper and Lin Brehmer jerk each other off over how much smarter they are than everyone else? What an asset that's been.

I bet Len Kasper would talk your ear off about the new Cage The Elephant album if you let him. I wouldn't.

Please expand on what "Naperville Scum" is?

Other than sharing a train line with them I have no dog in this fight but I never thought of people from Naperville as being scum.

Oh, just standard-issue bros, the kind of "Cubs fans" that Bernstein hated before his recent declaration that they're now acceptably smart and rich. Eastern Waukesha County produces the same bros, but they like the Brewers, and are even bro-ier than they are down here.

CH has a distaste for suburbia, Lake Geneva, small cities, and most of the South. Strangely he seems to like Florida. I was always surprised in his Blackhawks game threads how much he would hate on certain cities.

I like suburbia just fine, including Naperville.

is naperville the suburb that has the late night bars that route all the drunks into a neighboring suburb to get their DUIs, or is it the neighboring suburb that has the late night bars that routes all of the drunks into naperville to get their DUIs? i forget.

i used to know a kid from naperville from back in the days of the dialup BBS scene. he was from "rich" naperville and i went to his house one time and it was just like holy shit huge and they had $$$ out the wazoo, and i can see why after the first few hangouts where he was hooking me up with pre-napster (read: rare) tapedubs of vinyldumps of then-rare aphex twin / squarepusher shit once he met some of my relatively/scummy friends the dude kind of went off and lived a better life than i did. i'm sure dan bernstein would accept him at cubs games cuz call it a hunch $100 parking wouldnt fuck him up too badly.

so yeah maybe there's some sort of "rich naperville" stuff going on there? idk if the town is split inhalf with the "haves" and the "have mores" but i think there IS a dichotomy like that, and one of the high schools is the "rich" one vs the "not rich" one and etc.

Yeah, plenty of Naperville is largely indistinguishable from my native northwest burbs but I think it gets really cul-de-sac-y and McMansiony as you get away from downtown. I think the north side is the more traditional suburbia while the south is more the Land of Scoreheads.

The Cubs are coming off a great season and they are the hottest ticket since the Blackhawks.

Somebody more in the know could answer this question...

Can media outlets that exclusively carry Cubs broadcasts rights significantly and justifiably increase the pricing for commercial sponsorship opportunities in the future?

One would think so as I'm sure it was a lot cheaper running an ad during a Blackhawks game 7 years ago.

So, WGN radio, who says they lost money broadcasting Cubs games - Howdoyalikethemnow?

They dont increase them just because they have the Cubs, but the cubs will bring people to the station...they will leave the station on WSCR and the next morning it will still be on th station. Thus the ratings will see a bump via more people in general.

And the sponsored bits will be coming at ya every time you listen. Pre game, Post game, Weekly wrap up, Cub bits....all revenue.

The final bit, I hate to tell some people, selling ad time during a Cubs game v The Leary Show...well, its close,,,,but the Cubs might be able to charge just a little more

If I had to guess, WGN knew the Cubs would be good soon, but weren't willing to pay the new price that the Cubs wanted.

Similar to how ESPN let the White Sox walk away after 2005.

The WGN partnership was good when they were negotiating with themselves.

I guess that would depend on the type of deal struck, but I believe that once the rights are paid for, the broadcast outlet can charge whatever they want/can get for the commercial time. I also believe the commercial and sponsorship deals are exclusive from the broadcast rights themselves, and can be negotiated for whatever price and time frame agreed upon.

Or, I could just be an idiot.

It's my understanding that while in the middle of the current rights deal, the Cubs did not raise the price, but WGN wanted the Cubs to LOWER it due to their financial difficulties. The Cubs said "no" and they and GN mutually agreed to terminate the deal.

You are correct. WGN opted out because they were losing $6 million a year on it.

Probably the right move in that case.

I hope this is a Cubs bashing bit and you're not that naive on when to buy and when to sell.

If they were losing $6 million a year when they were bad they probably weren't going to make much when they were good.

Just like the Yankees getting dropped by their longtime home it has to make financial sense.

Probably hasn't been on with B&B given the way Dan trashed Pat's work for years.

Unaware Dan ripped Pat....not surprised as we all know the only cool things in the world are youth hockey and camp but this is an example of the synergy that needs to exist. Cant have Smug and Prick take shots at everyone, then expect to tranny into Cubs games and have an audience. I mean Schmutzie and FatPat can only listen so many hours in a day.

Maybe "trashed" was the wrong word, but for years Dan didn't speak very favorably of Pat as a broadcaster, accusing him of not sufficiently tailoring his broadcast to intelligent fans. This was notable because in the Pat & Ron Show days, the usual criticism was that Ron was a worthless idiot and Pat carried the whole broadcast himself, but Dan took it further and wouldn't speak highly of either one. This was most evident in 2008 when the Score had Farmer and Stone doing Sox games, calling Pat Hughes "too homespun" and "pandering to old ladies in Iowa" while Ed Farmer and Steve Stone presided over the Baseball Graduate School Of The Air, right here on 670 the Score. Also notable was that meanwhile, Dan never spoke ill of Len Kasper, and back in the days of hockey being history's greatest monster, he was nonetheless effusively positive about how good John Wiedeman is on Hawks radio.

I chalked it up to loyalty to Reinsdorf/CBS and a little bit of professional envy on Dan's part, he himself a Cubs-organization radio announcer once. Whatever. I'm sure Pat Hughes is smart enough now.
