I finished the book. There is no easy way to organize all my thoughts. I will do my best.
Her best points revolve around the non stop trolls who create multiple accounts to replace the ones she blocks. This mob will say vile things to her and other media figures. Comments about raping someone or murdering them or I know where you live are just way out of bounds. She comments quite a bit about the Portnoy mobs, and I can see how they can unleash a firestorm when they bring up a public figure on their podcasts and shows. Fair game is calling her out for all inconsistencies in her logic, the flat out mistakes of facts, and her very one sided view of the world. I am as guilty as anyone of making fun of her appearance, and I have always felt appearances are fair game. I am sure many think the opposite.
Now, with that out of the way, the rest of the book is just trash. It is just a collection of personal experiences of various women in media over the years. The women she cites certainly have a lot more credibility than Jules. So to the extent they broke barriers and endured backlash and set backs, I can appreciate that. But generally, I would say that most of the the backlash is the same backlash that men in media get. For my part, I ride writers (like Rozner) and announcers (like Joe Buck) endlessly. I do not care about gender, race or whatever.
Specific to Julie, she is just insufferable. I feel very bad for her husband. I think she would agree with me on that point. He had to ask her not to tag him on Twitter to avoid the resulting backlash. She complained that coworkers unfollowed her. They did not want to be part of the backlash either.
Around the Score studios, how often can one complain to management and coworkers? The Twitter mob comes after her, and the Score tells her to stop doing controversial stuff, and yet she blames them when she gets attacked. At least she admits that (presumably) Mitch was a nice guy that tried to help. It is not CBS or Entercom’s job to go after the Twitter mob that you insist on fighting with. Her complaints about coworkers not promoting her work or inviting her into the whisper networks should come as no shock. No one likes you. You are the office problem child. It is not because you are a woman. It is because you are an insecure asshole that cannot relate to others. Everything is about YOU. You make every story about you. You are slighted in every scenario. People do not want to associate with you. My god, how many times does one person complain about not having a bathroom on your floor because it is being worked on?
Holding ESPN as some virtuous progressive shop is just silly in light of all the legacy Deadspin coverage of their sexual harassment. You just hate Entercom because they got tired of your bullshit and could not bend to your every petty demand.
How could you complain station’s core demographic? I think it is obvious. You state that almost all the callers and texters were male, and yet you insist that half the audience is female. How blind are you to reality? The world is just a certain way. Stop trying to deny it.
Julie has a serious victim complex. It clouds her perspective on every issue. Pro sports (and the NCAA to a lesser degree) is a dirty business. The athletes are mostly rich and have been at the top of the ladder their entire lives, catered to by everyone around them. And yet, they have the same problems that all people have - issues in relationships, drug abuse, mental health problems, etc. We hold them up on a pedestal for their on field accomplishments. We expect our teams to win. Yes there is a deal with the devil in there. But it is not like you can throw out all the bad guys and bring in only good guys. No business, frankly, could run like that. People have issues. Pro sports is merely a reflection of our society and under a large microscope. You should not be part of the media that covers it if you are unable to focus with the on field stuff more than obsessing about the bad behavior of the players. Fans (i.e. your customers) want to hear about their teams’ success or lack thereof in competition. It is as simple as that.
Ok the Kane stuff. i struggle with this one. She says there is information (that she knows) that is not public that basically shows his guilt. The entire situation is fishy. But while I initially believed the accuser, I ultimately said her allegations did not seem credible. If there is evidence to the contrary, I would love to see it. In the absence of that, how is a fan like me supposed to be mad at Kane? He looks to be wrongly accused. I believe in due process, a key part of our legal system.
I leave you with this- if you despise Julie, rest in peace. She is absolutely miserable with her own existence. This woman struggles just to get through a single day. She talks about how many times she was crying in the office or completely distraught over social media. It is sad. Mostly, she brings it upon herself. She was terrible at her job. She has mostly terrible thoughts. For those that make threats, I will never condone that. Beat them with facts and “better” opinions.
It was worth my $15.
