For those keeping score at home: Elon Musk trying to preserve free speech by buying twitter is silly because some speech is able to be suppressed without violating the tenets of free speech. But also, Elon Musk should try to stop the suppression of speech, but this time it's books that teach second graders about the joys of transitioning their gender.

This is a problem that goes far beyond Julie though and we've allowed it to get there. It's the entire concept of "hate speech."

Yeah, people have the right to say racist, homophobic, or whatever nasty shit they want. The First Amendment wasn't designed to protect your right to compliment The Handmaid's Tale.

This is a complicated topic, but this goes back to Civil Rights Act of 1964. I believe that something had to be done at the time, but we now treat this legislation as something tantamount to God handing down the Ten Commandments to Moses. Everything prior to it is null.

The act was a flawed attempt to make people "equal" that has clearly failed, but it's also created so many negative externalities that the people drafting the legislation likely didn't foresee. Being an anti-racist, anti-sexist, anti-homophobe has become the ultimate virtue in society. We deny biological sex in the name of equality or something. Try filling out a job application, a grant application, ect., and you are going to have to question if federal oversight on this is improving anyone's life.

The original principles of the Constitution can't be washed away in the name of "equality" or "equity". It was freedom of speech that got us to even ponder trying to make society more equitable. Throwing it away isn't the solution when those efforts fall short.
