look how much the mere mention of North moves the meters at this site versus the everyday shows

This place used to hum with discussion about radio when the Score had compelling hosts. Its much more sports oriented now.

not true

The guy reconfigured sports talk in this city.

The Score was poised to follow in the Coppock mold of being the mouthpiece for management. Terry, Shaer, Hanley etc. were all happy to be continue the paradigm of being the all knowing high priests who were received word from on high and delivered it to the ignorant masses. North flipped it and suddenly talk radio was the means for the fans perspective to get to the teams. Mac was quick to follow this lead and boom THE VOICE OF THE FAN was born.
I new you'd chime in with this thought...you're very consistent. I respectfully disagree with your recollection of how things went down however. I listened from day 1 pretty much from when they went on the air to til the sunset shutdown (During the week only. I rarely tuned in on weekends). The Score was the voice of the fan from day 1, regardless of your perception of the hosts. The shows back then were heavily reliant on input from callers. They drove the shows and topics. North did bring a different perspective to the table which was valuable and often entertaining - but he represented the meatball fan, not all fans.

I don't think you meant this as a put down so I won't take it that way. We've discussed this before and I'm consistent in my opinion because I fully believe it to be true.

Mac will tell you that at the beginning it was Terry's advice that he follow North and keep his distance from the fans. Take North out of the equation and you have Shaer, Wolf + Jiggs, Terry + Mac with Murph and his five pound bag. Murph would have been the outlier in that group. Sure they would have taken calls but they would have had a completely different posture towards fans.
For the record, it wasn't a put down at all.

When you say that's how you believe it went down, is that how you remember it or perceive it based upon subsequent stories? (i.e. - were you listening back then?).

North knew Dan Lee and Seth Mason becore they started The Score...and North was the guy who convinced them to start an all sports radio station, which he had been telling them for a year or so.
That's how North got a job on the station - not the reason why one was created.

Not true. I'll post the history later if I remember.

Other than the 20-page thread about Amazon and garbage trucks, yeah. I remember when North, MJH, and B&B all had lively discussions here. Even secondary shows like Murph, Carm & Silvy, Salisbury & Rosenbloom, and other stuff got talked about. Now we've hit the point where we can barely even listen to B&B anymore.

He's been hosting a Sunday show for the past few years that like 11 people listen to. This won't be any different. People will just be pissed that they can't hear their "Sunday Rock Block" of Tom Petty.

I didn't listen from Day 1 but I did listen from year 1. I cannot remember if those were years that the Loop lineup of Brandmeier-Stern-Dahl-Matthews was on as that would have decreased my sports radio. However, I was a Score listener, no doubt.

The Score was supposed to be a radio version of Sportscenter. Where hosts would talk about local and national sports coverage of games and events.

Not to get off topic, but what the hell has Tom Shaer been doing? I remember him being an update guy at ESPN 1000 for a few years, but that was like 7 or 8 years ago.

Love them or hate them, I always see these names garnering more buzz from you guys than anybody chirping today...
Mike North, Mike Murphy, Chet Coppock, Dan McNeil, Bruce Wolf, Dan Jiggets...
Not a judgement, just an observation.
Am I missing anyone?

That is Wendell Smith.
He did sports on WGN and wrote for the Sun-Times.
Check out the Jackie Robinson movie.
Smith was instrumental in getting Robinson to play for the Dodgers.

Congrats to Mike......he's much better suited for a local show as opposed to the national outlet he's on.

Should be interesting to have a post game show without a former jock on it. Definitely will be following the ratings war from afar....

So who's gonna win? You're an inside player and know the market. Go out on a limb. My prediction? Hubby Arkush et al. Sadly.

We are not the "average" sports radio consumers.
Lots of guys listen to the Score and have no idea that this concept exists.

DO NOT WANT NORTH AND SAYERS

There are some interesting options this year for postgame. North is first up for me. If he hasn't changed, on to OB and his crew. The Score postgame is about fifth on my list.

Murph had fity-1 on his show shortly after Chico got hired by the Panther. Murph was pressing Jimmy on the Tampa 2 scheme, what it is, what is intended to accomplish and so on. For whatever reason Jim wasn't directly answering the questions. You could hear the escalating aggravation in Murph's voice. After 4 or 5 attempts to get a few thoughts on the Tampa 2, Murph just cut the interview off.
I golfed with McFish and Jim a few weeks later and told him he pissed off Murph and that he'll never be on Murph's show again. I'm pretty sure he hasn't.
Jimmy drained a 24 footer on 18 at Wood(Wind)bine to beat me 81-80.

I am thrilled for Mike North. The guy was the cutting edge when THE SCORE began. He went off the tracks. Time for redemption. This will be hysterical. The Bears are going to suck, and North will crucify them.

If Mitch was smart he would have brought North back to The Score and paired him with OB. Instead he decides on Hub, Big Cat and Kreutz.

FACT: North would have been invited back to the Score, but the current hosts overall said NO. Dont know exactly who said NO...maybe all, but enough to stop any further discussions from management.

You'd have to bet it was Bernstein/Holmes/Speigel/Goff - the group who really dislike callers, believe they are smarter than everyone else, hate the old Score personality. Again, who really wants to hang out with this group?

Mitch wouldn't even have to ask Bernstein. He knows Bernstein hates "Meatball" radio. Which is what North was. And the entire tone of the station has gone to Bernstein's style and away from the North style. So of course all of the hosts said no. But it's basically Bernstein saying no cuz they're all Bernstein-like now.
