Found it. It was the Sun-Times. Norths talks about Webio!!!!

North to expand sports-talk Webio station
Recommend Comments

March 10, 2009
FROM SUN-TIMES SPORTS STAFF
Former WSCR-AM (670) host Mike North's venture into Web-based entertainment is about to expand in a big way as North's ChicagoSportsWebio.com will feature sports talk from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. beginning in April.

The site will feature:

"Monsters in the Morning" will be the first show on ChicagoSportsWebio.com.

6-9 a.m.: a simulcast of "Monsters in the Morning" — featuring North and Dan Jiggetts;

9-11 a.m.: Tribune sports writer Teddy Greenstein and Matt Weber, of WSCR-AM (670);

11 a.m.-3 p.m.: Jonathan Hood, from WMVP-AM (1000), and Tim Doyle, from the Big Ten Network;

3-6 p.m.: Radio legend Chet Coppock and boxing legend Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini.

The program director will be Jesse Rogers, formerly of WSCR.

North stresses the employees at ChicagoSportsWebio.com will enjoy the same benefits of full-time employees at other workplaces, and they'll also have a stake in the station's success.

"Everybody who works for ChicagoSportsWebio.com is getting full health benefits and life insurance," North said. "And each person will have a sales packet given to him.

"If they sell ChicagoSportsWebio.com to somebody, they get 15 percent. If I sell $100,000 worth of advertising, I get $15 grand. If [WSCR] did this, I'd still probably be there."

Local businessman David Hernandez is the majority owner in the new venture and has purchased 32 domains, including LosAngelesSportsWebio.com, and others.

"It won't be long before the Web address book is like a GPS, but instead of punching in an address, you punch in ChicagoSportsWebio.com," North said. "And the revenue sharing is important. It's an incentive."

So is Webby leaving the Score to do this?

I'm assuming he can't do both. That could potentially be a good show but I'd have a hard time switching from Silvaddle.

I'd probably give Hood's show a listen though. I don't know much about Doyle other than I already know it's MUD's favorite show and it hasn't even aired yet.

I'd have to guess he's leaving or at the very least, gviing up his producer job on Holmes/Hampton. He definitely can't do that and be on the air from 9-11.

I'd love to see what the ad rates are going to be.

North can't sell $100k for his TV show, who's going to buy it for a webcast?

The only one making money in this deal is GoDaddy.com from the 32 domain name registrations.

They couldn't afford McNeil. He's gonna get 500k from the Score in a couple of months. Have you looked at this line up. It's guys who can't get any legit full time radio jobs? That's why they're doing this.

This is the funniest thing I've read in a long time.

Mac will be damn lucky to get half of this.

I don't quite understand the anger that's being directed at this new internet venture. Sure, I think North sucks, but at least new jobs are being created for people like Hood, Chet, Doyle, Jesse, etc. I think it's a positive thing when an industry tries to expand. Maybe they fail. But what if they hang on for a few years. All that does is provide the market with more compeition. I'm sure the people at WSCR and WMVP love what North is doing. He's providing them with potential future leverage against their current companies. Even if the money isn't great, I bet it's more than most of these guys were making as part-timers. And what does Teddy G have to lose? He has a full-time job at the Trib (although who knows in the newspaper business), and I think Doyle has a gig at the Big Ten Network. North, Jigs and Boom Boom are already rich, so what's really the risk? I wish them luck.

Rico,
I agree but like the others said: Good Luck sponsoring this!! The big sale point is how many hits "ChicagoSportsWebio" get's right now. The newspapers can't make money off the internet. If North's simulcast is getting minimal downloads, good luck to the rest of the crew!

Internet radio is very similar to local access TV, easy to get into, hard to make any money.

I will ask all you internet radio and north fans once again-

Did anyone know that the Monsters was being simulcast on the web station?
Has anyone ever listened to the show on the internet?

If his fans don't, who will? And who would pay big money to sponsor it?
The problem with being able to count the hits (listeners) is you can't BS the advertisers with fake numbers. No one will pay for a long term deal with a miniscule number of listeners, it would be a huge waste of your advertising budget.
To me, it is just another "concept" that north didn't think through. It isn't going to be the next big thing, it is just something for a guy running out of options.

BTW, to the "hosts" that signed on, Welcome to the world of commission sales, it won't be easy for them to make ANY money.

I've got a question: Each show has 2 guys. If Hood gets a sponsor does he have to split the 15% with Doyle. Afterall, he is selling it for Doyle's show as well. Chet's partner is rich. He'll probably tell Chet he can keep all of the ad money. Can you see this rich boxer trying to sell ad time? He doesn't even live here.

I can see some of these guys fighting over ad money. This could get ugly.

SID is right. In these tough economic times your not gonna get a local business to buy ad time for a radio show that can't be heard in cars.

Hood - Hey buddy, I've got a great deal for you. 5 grand for 50 spots. I'll even do extra on air mentions. I'll say I eat at your place all the time.

Owner - Are you fuckin' kidding me? First of all, who the fuck are you? Second, what the fuck is a webio? Get the fuck out of here.

North acts like he's doing the hosts a favor by giving them 15%. All he's doing is making them the sales staff so he doesn't have to hire people to do that. That's all. 15% of anything they sell will be nothing. Cuz you won't get more than $20 a spot for this shit.

What the fuck? Who says "fuck" that much?

I once had a girl reject me and she used the word "fuck" 10 times while she did it. I counted.

Maybe Big Fan should call one of these hosts and try to advertise this site. I'd just be curious to see their asking price and eventually what they accept. Then Big Fan can say "no thanks" in the end.

Ok. Jesse is the PD of this bizzare web radio thing. I'm sure he wasn't responsible for these hires. North probably hired this distinguished ensemble of radio talent. :pukel: I'm guessing that Jesse will be able to fire people. Who will Jesse fire first? Light 'em up. (I'm half joking cuz this thing will fail before he needs to fire anybody.)

Will Jesse be a tough boss or a pussy cat?

Jesse the bad ass boss:
Jesse - Chet, we need you to get out of the 1980s. Brendin Sir is dead. You better improve or I'll fire your ass. I'm Jesse Rogers god damnit.

Jesse the supportive boss:
Jesse: Hood, I'm looking at the web hits during your show, I see that your listenership is up to 37 people. That's up 25%. Good job. Keep it up, buddy. It's a start. You know the old saying: Rome wasn't built in uh...in uh...Rome wasn't built until they finished building Rome. Or something like that. You know what I mean.

"Rome wasn't built overnight" is the right wrong answer I think you were looking for.

I was going for a different "Right-wrong" answer. Everybody goes with the one you suggested. I wanted to mock Jesse saying something else.

The majority owner, David Hernandez, says despite laying out a lot of money to sign talent they will make a profit in the first year. Pappy thinks so too.

"Knowing the dynamics of how the Score evolved," Hernandez said, the Internet venture will make "a profit in the first year."

Stating that the station has "a better startup than we had at the Score," North added, "The model we put together here is a no-brainer."

This kind of reminds me of the movie "Titanic". When the owner of Titanic said "This ship can't sink."

Hit n Run is now Gone n Died.

Jesse and George were bad. I cannot imagine what the B team will sound like. Please don't give me Zach and Loho

The difference between how the Score evolved and webio is that WEBIO IS COMPETING AGAINST THE SCORE. And ESPN for that matter. The Score had no competition. And people can't hear webio in their cars. Other than that it's exacly the same, Mr. Hernandez.

The score has to be happy about this. They lost a bunch of no talent dead weight. George and Jesse have been there a long time and were expensive for what they did. I did like hit and run, but after listening last week with Zach, that was it for that show. The money saved isn't great but they can grad cheap beginners from Columbia and whatever school that Drinky shills for.

No loss for the station at all.

As far as the mike declaring "it's a no brainer", well if anyone should know about no brains, it's north.
