On Sports Media and Golf
Ed Sherman

This will be my last regular media column for a while. My tag-team partner, Teddy Greenstein, will assume the duties through mid-August. I'm coming off a long run covering the media during the Bears' Super Bowl stretch. I'm sure Teddy will catch up when the Rush go to the Arena Bowl.

I'd prefer more from Ed Sherman & less writing from North & Dahl!

So why is that these guys have ZERO credibility? Is it because they're awful at covering the sports media, neither is fully dedicated to it, or because they each get paid to show up on Chicago Tribune Live? Have either ever ripped that abortion of a local sports show? Didn't think so.

I would like to see some constructive criticism of Tribune Live. Especially if they were to say no Dan McGrath.

I think Teddy Greenstein does a great job, and certainly a much better job than Ed Sherman, but I do worry about how objective he is. He's a regular contributor to MJH, and seems to have a good relationship with their show. I'm not saying there's a reason to be critical of their show, but I'm hoping he can be fair and balanced.

Greenstein is no media analyst. Cmon. The next time he critiques a Tribune-owned program or media personality in other than glowing terms will be the first time. So much for objectivity. He might as well join Levine and write for Vine Line. If you're going to be an in-house shill, you might as well have the title.

I couldn't agree more with what's been written. I'm generally disappointed each time I read a sports media column because there is no real reporting going on. Each story seems to be some p.r. run type of piece that gives no real inside information or personal critique.

One thing I hate is the interviews with the likes of Troy Aikman to get their perspective on the game they are covering...who cares? That will come out in the pregame if not during the game itself. Tell me something interesting that's happening behind the scenes instead of offering up "fluff" pieces.

Easy rip jobs on Dick Vitale and others don't count as good columnist work because many people share the same view and their is nothing new to the story. I want to read good criticisms of things people say and do as it relates to the job of those in the media. With all of the things that have been said over the last few days by Mike North, I can't believe that not one person in the media reporting business has done their job and written about this at all. That is their job and, with the exception of Ted Cox at the Daily Herald, I don't think Teddy or Ed do it very well. I think these guys have gotten too close to those they are supposed to be writing about and, as a result, won't write stories that have any negative aspect to it.
