I'm thinking Sinclair overpaid. The only value WGN has right now is that it is already included in most cable distribution packages. Beyond that, they have nothing to offer.

Will be interesting to see how the sports are effected... Blackhawks, Northwestern Basketball & Football, etc.

Maybe they give another shot at a third sports talker?

Does Sinclair do a lot of radio? I thought they were mostly tv.

From Variety...

"Tribune Media’s assets include 42 TV stations, WGN America, WGN Radio and a 31% stake in Food Network."

Food Network? Who knew?

Great info here...

OK, if 42 local broadcast stations and a large chunk of Food Network are included, then I can see the higher price. I'm curious what markets those stations are in.

I can only guess that the majority of them are various CW type networks from coast to coast?

That would be delightful.

I loved it back when it was on HDNet. Now I only catch it when I'm at my in-laws'...

And now Macy's is on it's last legs.

Did a little research on this. Sinclair has only a few radio stations compared to the many television interests. In today's day & age, an independent station is stronger when it becomes part of a cluster of various stations - like 670, WBBM. etc.. My guess is they branch out and cluster WGN Radio or maybe they sell it off separately? Total guess and speculation on my part...

Uh huh, yeah, and the Telecommunications Act of 1996 increased competition.

My guy tells me that Sinclair has a reputation for whacking the big payday talent after taking over. The higher the contract the higher he/she goes up the hit list.

Big money talent is traditionally phased out... contracts not renewed, departments restructured, retirements/buyouts encouraged, shifts changed, etc. Not saying this is their plan here but they do have a reputation in the industry. This could get interesting...

And oddly Sam Zell was out of his hole pushing his new book on the Squint & the Meat Puppet show on MSNBC this morning.
