Dan's voice has seemingly gotten worse

Let me know if there was anything interesting said. I don't want to listen to an hour of this. As soon as she asked Jason "What type of kid were you" I was out.

I never started listening in the first place but otherwise second this. Just give us the hits of it.

Was gonna listen till I saw it was an hour. Not saying my time is that importance or I am "someone," but in no way could I listen to Sarah Spain for 1 hour. I would never make fun of someone's appearance, but not a voice for radio.

Listening to it now, about 10 minutes in. The first question asked to him "What kind of Kid were you?", his reply
was a 3 minute ramble about this and that, Spain had to interrupt for a second question. 12 minutes in now, Goff has
probably been talking for 11 of the 12 minutes.

Sarah could have done a better job following up on some stuff, like how Jason dropped out of school because his broadcasting instructor was going to instruct them in broadcasting, or, you know, how his year of hosting afternoons in Chicago went and how it went wrong. Instead, she just goes "well, you wound up in Chicago again and then you were out to make room for Someone Who Has Been There Before And Struggled With Personal Issues." First of all, hey, haven't we all, second, Dan McNeil has a name and you can call him by his name without getting sued, third, uh, didn't Jason have to get re-hired at the Score? and wasn't that kind of a tale of its own? Didn't Jason win ratings books in middays? What was it like taking over for Terry Boers? What were the challenges you faced in afternoons? That's a lot to skip. But I think that sounds like I expected this to be something it wasn't supposed to be. It's two friends who are in the club together, looking out for each other and giving each other exposure. It wasn't going to be remotely adversarial or probing.

If you're wondering what Jason says about Dan Bernstein, the answer is nothing -- at least not by name. There's a part where HR Superstar Sarah Spain talks about how good she is at finding powerful/important/on-the-right-side-of-history men to be her allies wherever she works so that if things ever get dicey, she's always safe. Jason said that he never thought he would be the one out in a reshuffle, the heavy implication being that he had found his allies who would keep him safe, but learned that people can talk a lot, but when it's time to stand for something, you find out who's really on your side. Uh oh.

Jason is seemingly doing a lot of guest work on podcasts. I guess the suitors aren't calling him for actual hosting gigs.

Did they talk about Atlanta at all? I still don’t know if the salsa story is true or not.

What was Mitch supposed to do when the Market Manager cut his nuts off to re-arrange a show hand crafted by Mitch? Was Dan supposed to put his windscreen on Jimmy D's desk and walk?

Does Goff think he wasn’t shown favoritism when he was undeservedly handed the afternoon show? Or is it only proven ratings getter Mac that has someone going to bat for him ?

They talked more about his year in Atlanta than his last three years here. The salsa story, as Jason told it here, was that he wanted salsa for his Taco Tuesday and asked the listeners where to get some, and the listeners recommended a place. So he made a radio bit of it and called the place to ask about their salsa. Then the PD, who never liked him and always had it out for him, asked what it was about, Jason explained it wasn't payola, and the whole matter seemed to be no big deal, until the PD decided to report him to corporate for it, at which point he got fired. Then they skipped right ahead to him getting fired again, ouch.

That seems like one of those things that isn't a big deal to a guy firmly entrenched in a daypart with ratings success. For a guy hosting nights at a new venture in Atlanta with a squirrely PD, maybe pick a different bit.

Maybe to that extreme if it ever comes to that, but I was just thinking in terms of layoffs or reshuffles or whatever. It's not even bad advice, it's great advice, it's just obnoxious coming from Sarah Spain.

Jason said the first thing he did after deciding to leave school (after getting high and ordering a pizza) was call the Score to inquire about an internship that previously had been offered to him during his call-in days. Again, smart thing to do, but to have a major-market internship to fall back on after dropping out of your freshman year of college is extraordinarily good fortune that is not extended to most students, no matter how many times they call their respective afternoon shows. When you think about it, Jason has had as many good breaks as he's had bad ones, if not more.

I’ll bet that the PD dropped a dime to whatever suburb Goff was driving through minding his own business in his Rover police dept and told them he knew Goff hadn’t changed or transferred his plates over yet so go get him and write a ticket , he had it in for him that much !!

It feels like a variation of that classic B&B bit where he called a Waffle House to find out if they serve pancakes (answer: they do, but they're not allowed to), which itself was probably a variation of something Steve Dahl did once.

He was blackballed from CBS employment after Atlanta and Mitch had to make some executive moves just to make him employable again.

The main reason I asked is because, IIRC, it was posted here years ago that people at AM1000 kept their distance from her because there was the impression she would go to HR with a claim of that nature if she had negative interaction with anyone.

PD got tired of desk pounding and giggles and national NBA talk in a college football town... so he used a lame offense to fire... what is missing?

I suppose being accused of under-the-table promotional deals would be enough to blackball one from the company, but why wouldn't anyone bother to ascertain that he in fact did nothing wrong? That PD must have really wanted him out (though Jason said the evening show was the station's best performer, which is such an anomaly that usually you would try to nurture or promote that talent).

A lot of the time there is just a standard rule to make things easier. If you get "let go for cause" then you get put on a list of people who can't be hired back. It's why a lot of job applications ask if you have ever worked for a company that is owned by the same group.

It's a lot easier and less likely to be sued then doing it on an individual basis.

Yeah, I remember that, too. I guess I was thinking less about getting other people fired and rather just preserving oneself.

There was also the time she lobbied to get the Barstool show cancelled, so I guess she has a lot of sway at ESPN now, huh.

She opens with (paraphrase)- antiquated idea that radio should give people what they want to hear? Seriously...how does a person think like that? The ENTIRE media entertainment world is playing songs, shows or producing content that people want.

Again, she's kinda right, but in the course of being Sarah Spain is too annoying to credit with being right. In the macro, I believe people in the media have a responsibility to push their consumers beyond their comfort zone and give them more than what they think they want. It's not wrong to want some curation or expertise involved in your radio: look at how we've agonized over how consultants killed WLS-FM and the Loop by winnowing the playlists down to the songs that have been focus-group-tested and approved so that no one can ever be accused of giving the people something other than what they want to hear.

Of course, what Sarah really means here is that her idea of radio is for the talent to give their opinions, which are those of the liberal orthodoxy, untrammeled by any dissent or oversight, because what they're doing is capital-letters Very Important and cannot be watered down by any mandate to entertain the listenership or keep enough of them around to justify the ad buys. What she's really describing here is posting online.

These two, Spain and Goff, do a lot of patting each on the back, for their perceived excellent work, and doing it right
all while being "minorities". They also perceive themselves as expert veterans in the Radio biz, and considering Spain
isn't on radio here that I'm aware of, and Goff is unemployed, sounds ridiculous coming from these two, and where they
are in their careers.

The Salsa story, when brought up, Goff seemed surprised, and caught off guard. He kind of stammered at first response,
then gave a long winded personal account of what happened, from his point of view. Like they always say, there are two
sides to every story, and I'm guessing the other side would be quite different than his version.

His college years, basically says he dropped out of school, because he knew what to do, and didn't need a college professor
to tell him how to do a radio job. He specifically brought up learning a "radio voice". He claims he didn't need to be taught that.
To Spain's credit, she kind of refuted that idea of his, and says people do need to learn a "Radio Voice".

Goff likes to point fingers at every thing that has happened to him, he needs to accept the fact there are consequences for his actions.
There's a reason why he's been fired twice recently, and no one is busting down his door to get him hired.

His last comment was a cryptic, "I think you'll be hearing from me soon...." stay tuned.....

See this all the time in all types of businesses. There are always those who get fired because "management was out for me."

It happens once, maybe a gripe, after that you are the problem and it will continually happen.

See this all the time in the workforce.

Humility for some is much more easier said than done.
