Hard to group PBP and color analysts in the same category. In terms of quality PBP, Wayne Larivee and Pat Foley were top tier. I also think John Rooney was very good.

Hawk and Harry are guys that you like with your team but as a fan of the other team....hell no. As a yoot, I didn't get the Sox games way up in Antioch so all I had was Jack Brickhouse. I'm sure the golden days of Harry and Piersall were great, but they weren't on /available up north. I loved Hawk and Wimpy but again....Hawk was only enjoyable if you were a Sox fan. When Harry got to the Cubs....I didn't like him....that's just me and I know I'm in the minority.

Color Analyst...vintage Steve Stone with Harry was as good as you could hope for. I haven't cared for him with the Sox.

Joniac is fine. I'm not a big basketball guy but Neal Funk as PBP was very good.

Does Neil Funk qualify? His narration of the Paxson three against the Suns was epic.

Johnny Morris on bears games in my youth was great. For you kids out there, the nfc was on CBS and the non national games were broadcast by the same people for the entire season. It was like a local broadcast every week

When there weren’t blackouts and Venture had to buy 3500 tickets.

Tim Ryan on PBP, right?

When Johnny cut back a bit, Jiggs did the NFL broadcasts for a couple of years when he was doing weekend sports on Channel 2.

CBS did a similar thing to Johnny Morris always working the Bears games years later where they always had Steve Tasker doing Bills games. Only the Bills had a dedicated announce team. Also, they weren't very good, so I suppose it was easy.

Hey, they stomped the Saints that one game!

@Chet: Yeah, Tim Ryan. I was gonna mention him above.

My dad supposedly had an altercation with Johnny Morris once, and my mom detested him because he wasn't Catholic, so I wasn't a huge fan. But we were a Channel Two news family, so I got my Morris fix.

Edited

Surprised there is no love for Tom Paciorek. Hawk always got defensive around Wimpy when he mentioned football

He was great in the booth, though.

That was my favorite era of NFL Today…Irv Cross, Brent Musburger, Jimmy the Greek, Phyllis George. For some reason it seemed like must-see TV back then.

Nas, how would you even know? You were like six.

Hawk was awesome back then, but it was the two of them clicking that made it work.

Then that was a good childhood.

He was with the Sox when Hawk cut out for a few years. He was great for the fans. When they brought on DJ . . . it just soured me. Lots of good memories of Hawk and Wimpy.

One of the stranger experiences I had in YouTube's deep archive of old MLB telecasts was stumbling upon a game where Hawk Harrelson was doing the typical Hawk Harrelson shtick for the Yankees. I think Jim Durham was minding the store that year.

payton's first few seasons we got a lot of lindsey nelson. excellent broadcaster. he watched the bears lose to vikings every year on a blocked punt or FG and the vikings' fred cox would kick 17 yard field goals. i believe my alex karras super toe could kick a plastic football further than fred cox could kick a FG.

after lindsey nelson, we got much more tim ryan.

In '88 and '89, it was John Rooney and Gary Thorne, respectively, with Paciorek. Jim Durham would do games in '90 and when Channel 9 had them. Durham wasn't real good. No rapport with Paciorek and there was such a drop-off from what was vintage Hawk. I know nobody cares, but I figured you might actually be interested.

Wimpy was actually a bit cranky when he was with Durham.

But I have seen a Yankees game with Hawk on YouTube, and I also found it strange.

Back in the day the 5 & 10 pm local Chicago newscasts 3-4 minute sports segment were must see viewing. No particular favorites they all were good. Savvy viewers would know which was first. Watch the first until something like tennis comes up and usually be able to catch a lot of all channels 2, 5, 7, and 9's. Unless it was a rarity that a player or team announcer was doing the sports than watch his whole sports segment. Those are now obsolete and I haven't watched in years.
