Post subject:  Quarantine Topic- Fond Early Score Memories

Since we are all stuck inside, except Ogie who has a gun to protect him from the virus, I thought we could start a thread to talk about the station in the 90s.

I remember that they had a contest for the White Sox in 1993 were listeners sent in songs about the team. One submission was a song to set to the music of Anchors Away, but inside it was Jason Bere.

I remember that Mike Murphy used to close down the day with a Beatles song on the days when there was enough day light for him to even have a show.

Probably my favorite time of the early Score were the days of speculation after Michael Jordan retired from baseball in 1995. It was non-stop coverage and rumors that he was practicing with the team or seen negotiating with Reinsdorf until he sent in his statement: "I'm back".

What are some of your favorite early Score memories?

So many to mention, but the one that comes to mind first is the Dave McGinnis fiasco. The hosts absolutely buried McCaskey and Phillips, and they deserved every bit of it.

The Jason Bere song was fun. They'd interrupt Shorty George's updates to play it.

The McGinnis thing is probably what I remember first. I didn’t start listening until 99 or so, but B&B on 9/11 always sticks with me.

One that's not too old but cracks me up was when the Bears had James Brown and one afternoon they had that "Woooow" sound effect and used it all afternoon. I was laughing so hard I was crying on my way to a call.

In lieu of starting another thread, the last day of Webio was Internet radio gold. Slow motion train wreck.

No fond early memories. I started listening in 2003 and I thought The Wiseguys was the greatest thing I had heard. I found it surfing AM stations and I was hooked.

Mentioned before, but I was never a talk radio listener. We always had xrt playing on jobsite. Was listening on an April 1st back in 91 or whenever, and heard them say a new, sister sports radio station was coming. I thought it was a Fool's Day joke. Didnt realize for months that it was legit. Once I discovered it, it was appointment radio whenever I was driving around. It was a perfect extension of Athlete's Feats.

Does anyone remember Bernstein's Alan Keyes' impersonation (back when Dan wasn't so woke?)

My favorite memories were all the great transitions between North/Jiggs and Heavy Fuel Crew. It was must listen radio every day. I don't know how many times I was late for a class because I was sitting in my car listening to them.

Especially when Ditka would stick around.

Those were great.

Sometimes the transition would be an hour long.

XRT had:

"I hope the Sox go all the way,
Which rhymes exactly with Jason Bere.
I hope the Sox go all the way,
It's about ti-i-ime."

At the very beginning I preferred McNeil and Hanley. Was that Tuesday/Thursday I can’t recall.

Haha yes.

Fun Bernstein was fun.

Summertime Sunday morning solo Bernstein was great. I'd listen either going to or coming back from golfing. Lots of silly baseball talk.

The best is when they would get into a long stupid fight over something.

Yeah. The Keyes voice reminds me. Does anyone remember a black men impersonating Hawk Harrelson contest they ran on Boers and Bernstein in 2002 or 2003?

I remember "The Jim Nantz Sports Time Machine," the time that Dan outwitted himself into creating a Friday Fung too esoteric to actually do and they had to call it off after one person.

North calling out Isaiah for walking off the court without shaking hands.

His McCaskey interview was good as well.

Being in the building the day North was allowed to change the line up and it was announced.

I got stuck in the car the day they all were going off on Tom Shaer. The dumbass called in to try and fight back and got lit up for what seemed like the greatest half hour of radio.

People were pissed. No one saw it coming. And it was done later in the day.

Mac was the most outwardly unhappy about it.

Yelling and screaming could be heard.

It carried on for months with Mac. He kept asking them eventually to release him so he could go work for KJR if I remember. ( They weren't hiring btw)

It was the day that North took over the place.

Everyone wanted to kick Shaer's ass.

He was almost totally devoid of any self awareness.
