Mark Grote will be doing Score Overnights 3 nights/week... rotating hosts for the other nights. How about that, surprised.

Too lazy to work the schedule Les did and cover the games.

He should do his shows entirely in Les's voice.

Grote already does kind of have that nasally annoying radio Hebrew voice.

I think that was a big sacrifice for him and 3 nights a week (probably Monday to Wednesday would be my guess) is a nice compromise. I still think he should get the everyday 4-7a shift when Mulli retires, and let somebody else do 11pm-4am.

I'm thinking Grote & Rongey will have a steadier stream of callers than Les. Serious sports fans wouldn't call Les knowing he'd dodge topics, interrupt, or go off on a nostalgia tangent. A rare Score gig to non on-air sjw spewers is refreshing.

Grote and Rongey. Nice. I am just glad they are keeping it local.

In what city is Herb going to be driving Lyft this time?

Herb must have wanted overnights.

Herb should call Ben Finfer for career advice.

I posted this in the Les thread but ya, some guys are desperate for on air time and will jump at the chance. Even if this schedule sucks for someone who has a wife and kids.

But It's an opportunity. Maybe if they do it right it may turn into another big opportunity in another market or daytime in Chicago.

Yep.

I have problems with some of Mitch's management decisions but I am incredibly thankful that he took the station local as it was trending to national after 7 pm weekdays and the entirety of weekends.

I got home from the airport just as Grote's show was starting. I got ten minutes in and then the first caller, who sounded like Caller Bob yammering about Harbaugh and Butkus and Ditka and tradition and passion made me want to throw my phone across the room so I had to shut it off.

Regular good caller "Doug from Dubuque" told Grote even after Les knew his hometown would mislocate Dubuque as "Doug from the Quad Cities".

I heard Mark and Rongey talking leisurely from 1-130 the other night and it was entertaining. It really was the concept of two guys talking in a bar before closing time.

Why does the Score air CBS Radio from 9-midnight but go with local programming for the overnight shift? Seems strange.

I'm listening to Adam Studzinski right now, and he's just replaying a Parkins and Spiegel interview from the previous day. I hope this shift isn't going to become a "Best of the Score" show if/when Grote decides to stop doing overnights.

That's what they were doing some of the previous days as well. It's still better than national syndication.

I believe they have to air a certain number of hours of CBS programming to remain a CBS station.

So it’s goodbye for the third and final time until I bust out at whatever I’m doing next and come crawling back for a 4th time ?

Early returns ,at least for me, is that Rongey and Grote are home run hires for the overnight. I had been listening to WFAN overnight just for the comedy provided by callers and a shouting host. (Sal Licata). I have disdain for NY teams so it's nice that I can play "home games" with 2 guys I think are perfectly suited for the job.

Les- His recent overnight shows were as bad as it gets for sports radio. Sad end of an era for Les screwups, misspeaks, pranks, wack-pack callers. There will never be a show this bad in Chicago sports radio again.

Grote- Pretty good show. Can be very dry. Getting bombarded with "Les was a great guy" by brain dead callers. He doesn't want to cut them off and be ignorant.

Rongey- Excellent show. Crying about Flores, but not insulting in his commentary even for a guy who comes off arrogant at times. Really comes up with some big name guests in the middle of the night.

Adam Studzinski- Has a good rapport with Les' wack-pack callers. Very polished & knowledgeable for a producer.

Isn't that basically what Leery does already from 12-2?

Rongey wasting time with Leela from Beijing at 4am Chicago time was amusing, I played it off the 670 Facebook feed.

I'm not sure what the commitment to CBS radio has to be, but I'm surprised they don't run a few of the producers from 10 to midnight. The same for the weekends instead of almost two full days of CBS radio.

Someone brought up WFAN in NY - they use their better producers to do some of the off peak shifts. You're not paying that much for this type of on air talent - use this as a minor league for the next group of prime time hosts.

It would also drive Julie nuts that others are getting shifts - and that twitter outrage alone would be worth hearing some of the producers do shifts.

Les wack pack all-star I-80 Frank called Grote calling David Ross a "rah rah boy". Frank was immediately cut-off. Then Grote told a story of Ross' leadership he saw when traveling with the Cubs.

2016 postseason there were extra people on the Cubs team flights. Rizzo didn't have his regular seat on a flight. Ross gets up and demands all the extra people stand up irate Rizzo doesn't have his regular seat. Grote (now obviously big pussy) stands up and offers his seat. (Amazing leader) Ross tells Grote sit down you're a regular.

Grote actually (occasionally slightly choking up) seriously used this story lauding Ross' leadership qualities.
