So you were not prepared for something if they took North off the air for the last week. Did this hit you as a shock? once again, everyone on this message board fully anticpated it, but you missed it? or was Mulligan and Hanley for 6 hours a day one of your ideas?

Now you have Muprh on vacation, you had Lawrence for 2 hours talking race relations in sports, which he will now do for 4 hours all next week,

July4th weekend, lotsa people off, summer vacations, gives you sometime to ramp up for the fall season.

What are you going to do to replace your "Superstar", as you so Ass Lickingly Called Mike North?

North sucked and isn't missed. All stations have backups working this weekend.

It's not just both sports talk radio stations where the main talent is off. Most of the local news outlets in Chicago, plus the national networks had reserves working all week, too. Vacations were planned weeks in advance, long before news broke last week about Mike North leaving "The SCORE".

If Mitch had any sense, his lineup would look like this:

Mully and Hanley 6-9
Murph and Fred 9-12
Larry and friends 12-2 Larry could win against Tirico and his merry go around of bad.
B & B 2-6 Even thought I would like to see them split up. But that is a topic for another thread.
6-10 The Bench- ZZ, Jason, who I think is improving with every show, and Drinky's four hour "above it all fest"

This makes far too much sense for Mitch to even consider.

I've read somewhere that this is an unrated period and all regular daytime personalities take vacations.

In the words of Murph: Mr. Reason... I like your angle!

I think those are pretty solid suggestions.

If Murph and Fred were so hot, why were they split up?

That's why Pappy said "September". It makes sense.

I still think, like many others, that he is going to be buying his own time on a station.

I bet he could sell enough advertising doing that then even the Score's $1.5M.

I looked into advertising for my company about a year ago and the peak hour (drive-time) rates were about $300-$325 per minute from 6am-7pm.

lets say you have 15 minutes of commercials per hour (probably a real conservative number) X $300 = $4,500 per hour X 4 hours = $18,000 per day X 200 Work Days = $3,600,000.

Now, if he was to give a 50% discount in relation to The Score's rates, he would make about $1,800,000. Then if you take a $100K out for production/help costs, $1,700,000 is left, and then the only subtraction would be his airtime charge, which is probably about $500K-$1M, I would guess (anyone help on this?). $1.8M - $1M = $800K (most conservative estimate).

So, low-end he books $800K, High end he books $2.5M.

And that is if he chooses to undercut the Score's ad rate.

now we get to see how good a businessman he is. i do think he will pay out more than 100k for production/help costs. how much do you have in this budget for jen jen the dogwalker?

but is that what will actually happen, in your opinion?

I think you grossly underestimated the rental fees and overestimated Be's capabilities.

You may also want to consider some kind of liability policy premiums which, considering his record, may be pretty high. Not sure what the amounts would be but I know that malpractice policy premiums are fairly significant.

Employing people is expensive. They may ask for benefits. Also, every jurisdiction above him will require payments of a variety of employment taxes.

He will have to cover a lot of professional fees that come into play when you start an operation.

Oh, and last but not least, Jen won't work for 35K.

Now, let's look at the revenue side. he would have to bill out a quarter of what Score bills out per minute in the early going while unrated. As far as ratings, I'll listen, you might too. Others? Not so sure.

Don't people...a lot of them...have to listen for any of this to happen?

Malpractice premiums for doctors are high. For other professions like lawyers and real estate agents, even though you are dealing with multi-million dollar transactions, MP for 1-2M of coverage is only about $200-250/mo.

I would think a far better approach for him would be to go out and start putting together a group of "star" radio guys with money who would invest in a partnership to go after a station. Many stations are struggling according to media columnists and I would imagine that a legit monetary offer would convince the owner(s) to sell. While radio guys would put together quite a bit of cash, it will not be enough. He would need to go out and also get an investor to foot the balance of the bill. I would think Dahl, currently unoccupied Meyer, Mac, Boers, Mancow, Kev, Murph, dare I say JB, Grobber, Stone would be a good starting point. I realize that many of these are currently under contractual obligations. Their involvement in early going should be in passive investor capacity. As their deals expire they would come in and take hosting duties.
