I think it's safe to say that Holmes will get the 10-12 AM slot as he has been the #1 backup it seems for quite a while, but, why is the Score putting him a guest host that will not be part of the long-term solution? Why not just leave him solo, or throw him over the next few weeks with one of the other backup hosts just to see if they can make the show better? There isn't much sense behind letting him co-host with Steve Stone....

They probably want him to have a co-host, they just don't know who yet.

There's really only 3 or 4 choices, if that's what they intend on doing. Why not just start the auditions with a partner unless they plan on him going solo eventually?

I'd think there is. Stone needs a driver. Without one a simplest item will turn into a one two hour long sentence.

Your guess is as good as mine, and I have a feeling that in the opinion of WSCR 670 management, Laurence Holmes is best suited for a full time hosting job, even if it's only for 2 hours every midday following "Mully & Hanley" in the morning. I have always heard that talk radio works better when you have 2 voices, regardless if it's a general news talk or sports talk format. For the short term, guest co-hosts will continue to sit in with Laurence until they find a suitable co-host who works best with him. I think Mike Tirico worked with the likes of Scott Van Pelt, Kirk Herbstreit & Michele Tafoya until ESPN Radio bosses settled on the former Golf Channel anchor to work as Mike's co-host and the name was adjusted to "Tirico & Van Pelt" in May.

I guess we know that Mitch doesn't think Drinky, Goff, or Paruch are fit for a day shift.

Think about it. These are the Score's other backups and they don't get to sit next to Larry for a tryout. They are bringing in outsiders.

Goff and Drinky have to be pissed.

Beardown's new theory: Goff and Drinky hate Mitch.

Or maybe Larry doesn't want them. I think part of these guest hosts might be Larry's suggestions. He said that in his blog. Maybe Larry doesn't want to compete with his fellow Score guys. That way he can shine with outsiders who are just there to have fun and already have gigs.

Another Beardown theory: Larry hates Goff and Drinky.

This probably makes Goff and Drinky mad at Larry. So, in turn...

Yet another Beardown theory: Goff and Drinky hate Larry.

I tend to think that these "guest co-hosts" were Laurence's idea, and that there's no bad blood between Holmes, Abbatacola & Goff. I predict once the White Sox season ends, nights on 670 "The SCORE" will feature the return of "Chicago NFL Live" with Doug Buffone during football season and "Last Call" with Matt & Jason. I also think Matt & Jason are will be doing plenty of local sports talk shows on the weekends.

Get off Laurence's case.

He's paid his dues (producing, sales and beat reporter), he's the best amongst the fill in and weekend hosts at WSCR, but I think it's pretty clear that he needs a radio partner. ...and probably a girlfriend too.

At least he comes to his show with a plan and cohesive thoughts.

I disagree. Holmes sometimes may come prepared, but his self-confidence issues and his varying personality traits make for some rather uncomfortable, and sometimes lame radio.

He would be a better listen with a radio partner, preferably someone at the Score who knows radio and is entertaining, unlike his guests last week. As long as he has a strong partner and the show is "Holmes and Anybody" rather than the "Laurence Holmes Show" with so-and-so, I could tolerate him middays.

If Laurence had talent, his shows might be more listenable. But they're sort of like where Zack is with his shows: lots of bleah and too damned much mock anger. Paying dues: my understanding was our friend was jumping job to job to avoid being fired. I always thought paying dues was being successful at different rungs of the ladder. That he found any traction with the reporting was a big surprise.

I think Larry has confienence when he does his show. He says his bullshit with confidence.

But like others have said it's just the way he presents the show. Very phony. Larry plays roles to get a reaction. It's all contrived. Somtimes Larry tries to play a bad ass. Sometimes he'll try to play the intellect. He'll fake excitement or anger. It's also a lot of long-winded speeches, from Larry, to say something simple.

He really has no insight. Has no humor. He'll attempt humor but fail. It's just bad.

I think it's because of his lack of confidence, you see the varying personalities of his. He feels he has to try to be something he's not, to garner reaction. He can't just come on the radio and be real.

- The Bernstein wanna-be like character: trying to prove to himself and others that he is intelligent... trying to emulate Dan Bernstein.
- His role as a party animal black guy who parties and scores with white chicks... he's black, yet he feels like he is whiter that butter. Trying to proof to himself that he is a brother.
- Days he wants to know you are talking about at the water coolers, with his "Pulse" segments. Laurence is trying to be all cool and down with it. That is the nerd/Urkel in Holmes... the very reason why he tries to be a Smart-like Bernstein characater or a party animal black guy who scores with white chicks.

He was at his best as Laurence, the sidekick who liked wrestling, and didn't try to impress anyone. He knew most sports fans, as well as Score management knew the show was a joke. He didn't care. He went out and him and J Hood and fun.

And, I would make the same case for Mariotti. He has little self-confidence, which is why he has to instigate and stir the pot to get noticed. He shouldn't have to, but he feels he has to. He also is afraid of direct confrontation.

If he didn't stir the pot or instigate, would he be a good writer? The guy is intelligent, so I would lean towards yes.

Rick Morrisey was on with Laurence today and sorta bitched slapped Lauence a few times on some Ryan Dempster conversation. I dont recall it totally, but Laurence quickly changed the subject and mentioned about 10 times how he is bringing the pulse back.

Rick Morrissey is like nails through a chalkboard sometimes, especially when he appears on "The Joker's Wild", a.k.a. Comcast SportsNet's "Chicago Tribune Live". I don't know who's worse among Trib columnists, Morrissey or Mike Downey.

Holmes brought that Dempster sucked as a starter before this year and Morrisey brought up he was an All star starting pitcher a few years ago.

Yup.

Tired of this. Goff and Drinky or Paruch and Bartosch. Let Larry do weekends & reporting. Let the torture end.

I was looking at the Score web site to see who Larry is with today. Who the hell is Patrick Elwood?

Man, they are really scraping from the bottom for Larry's friends.

I know who you are referring. Patrick is one of the anchors of "Good Day Chicago", FOX 32's local news/talk show along with Mike Barz, Nancy Loo & Jan Jeffcoat. Elwood is a big White Sox fan, and every year he's been an anchor at FOX, he shaves his head for St. Baldrick's.

Ah, the kind of guest you'd have on if you're doing a telethon... So, I give up: what is this parade of non-sportstalk cohosts supposed to convey to me? That Larry can speak to more sports subjects than they? Hey, howdy, if he wants to do that, he can invite me to park my ass next to a mike for 2 hours! "Hi, we have Beebo with us today, in his Mr. Wrestling mask and a yellow sundress...!" Yiiyiii! That's good radio, mister!!!

Phooey

that expresses it pretty well to me...contrived anger and feelings. He's just come off like an automon, which is fine for a reporter but not good in my book for a host. He's always looking for an angle...

Not even. Bernstein, for example was a good reporter. Greenie was maybe half a notch behind. They both had thoughts and points of view.

I don't mind people looking for angles. I like that. It's just Larry never finds a good one.

He just never sounds like he's having a conversation with you like a real person. It always sounds like he's performing. It just sounds like bullshit. Bernsie, Mac, and the other good hosts have that ability. They are just talking to you.

Larry, has this phony and patronizing presentation. It's bad.
