Ex-Bear Dan Hampton joins SCORE lineup
By Teddy Greenstein | Tribune reporter
4:10 PM CDT, July 31, 2008

Officials at WSCR-AM 670, the home of the White Sox, were beaming Thursday about acquiring their own Hall of Famer.

Bears great Dan Hampton will finalize a deal next week to join Laurence Holmes for middays (10 a.m.-noon) at the Score, beginning Sept. 2.

"It's time to let the Bear out of his cage," program director Mitch Rosen said. "Dan is a Chicago sports icon and he brings star power to the radio station."

Hampton was a prime-time player at WGN Radio until the station decided to waive its Bears pre- and post-game shows in June. Hampton then met with executives from several TV and radio stations, and did a show with Holmes on July 10.

"He didn't come in with any arrogance," Holmes said. "It wasn't: Hey, I'm a Hall of Famer, I can do whatever I want. It was: How can I make this the best show I can?"

Hampton is also in talks with WMAQ-Ch. 5 about a role on Sunday nigh

:puker:

Can't we try even one original idea, even for 2 hours, on one of these sports stations? Hampton. Why?

The Chicago Sports Exchange was bad, weird, and oddly riveting radio. Do that. Anything except another ex-Bear telling us how things used to be.

I heard when Hampton was on with Laurence before, not so good. Mitch keeps pace with his cornball sports related comments..

Well thank god for Waddle and Silvy being on at the same time. Horrible decision IMO.

After naming Laurence Holmes the "permanent" 10-noon host, any chance of having a good show were lost.

Weird.

Well, they'll both tell stories of dating and banging beautiful women. The only difference will be that Hampton's stories are actually true. Hey Larry, despite the fact that Hamp is in his 50s, he has a better shot of dating Ginger Zee than you do.

Wow. What a coincidence.

Is this the new trend for Chicago sports radio? A dork and a Bear.

Silvy and Waddle and now Hampton and Larry

I think ESPN's "Dork and a Bear" show beats the Score's version

This has to be Larry's worst nightmare. His partner is a "good ole boy" cracker from Arkansas. That has to be the exact type of white guy that Larry dreams of stabbing.

Barf. Rosen is out of his mind. Look I appreciate Hampton the football player as much as anyone, but please, keep him off my radio.

Maybe Hamp will blow another .12 in Arkansas and be asked off the show at some point.

Mitch you are a boob, and not the soft, wonderful kind but the fucking stupid kind. Do you have no sense at all?
Larry is bad enough, but now you give us the marble-mouthed hick to boot? You dumbass.

To quote John Madden, "Big Mistake!" Of the "guest co-hosts" who LoHo worked with, I thought Comcast SportsNet's Pat Boyle was truly the "Best of the Best". Pat sounded relaxed & thought created as good a chemistry with Laurence as he does with Mark Schanowski on "SportsNite". I appreciate what "Danimal" did for the Bears on the field, but I didn't care for Hampton when he guest hosted that one time. It was no surprise that LoHo got the midmorning job, but it's a letdown that Hampton got the job that I think should've gone to Boyle.

This is how their first show will go. Larry will kiss Hamp's ass and try to compete with his acoplishments.

Larry - Dan, I'm sooooo excited to have you as a partner. I'm really, really, really looking forward to our partnership. I think me and you can have some really, really, really great shows. Ok, before we get to the pulse, why don't you tell us about the women you nailed in New Orleans the week of the Super Bowl.

Hampton - Well, let me tell you Laurence, we were like rock 'n' roll stars when we rolled into New Orleans. Let me put it this way, Laurence, me and Otis Wilson made a lot of New Orleans women happy that week.

Larry - I can relate to that Dan. I played baseball at Depaul. I almost was in MLB. Anyway, it was our intermeral championship at Depaul. All the ladies wanted to bang me cuz I was the star of the team. So I know exactly how you and Otis felt. Let me put it this way, Dan, I made a lot of the Depaul girls happy as well. Ok. Now it's time for the pulse...

I actually thinks this could be at the level of the "bear and the bull" bad. I dont understand the talent evaluation at the score sometimes, its like "ok, you suck and your hired, welcome to the score".

I am guessing Hamp rips off Laurences head and uses it as a bowling ball in less then a week. I also was almost a MLB ballplayer, in high school a scout was there to see one of my teammates and the scout asked me to get out of the way, I was soooooo close, I could have been a contender.

Since this means Hampton will no longer be a part of WGN's Bears pregame coverage, I'm all for it. I have no intention of being a regular listener to any show Laurence is on anyway, and listening to Hampton trying to utter a a sentence that isn't filled with interjections and long pauses is so painful that I sometimes feel sorry for the guy.

I would love for someone to call during their first show together and explain Laurence's dream about stabbing white people to Dan.

Baaaaaad call on this one, Mitch.

I guess it will be music/BBM from 10-2. Might be time to invest in an IPod.

When he was on with Laurence he was Bad.

Another guy who is going to come on the air and play it safe.

Actually has some great potential to get crazy and pissed off.

There was a reason why Hampton was available. WGN didn't renew his contract. As for LoHo, there's NO reason why he was available (LOL, sorry!) Borefest.

Would Pat Boyle instead been able to help making Hampton listenable? Would you be better off with Crowley? How did they let David Haugh "escape" to ESPN?

Mitch, Mitch, Mitch...

Dammit Beardown! Between this and the "Dork and the Bear" comment I've done two Danny Thomas-style spit takes with my coffee.

And no, I didn't try his eggs.

I can't imagine how much more arrogant Holmes will be about his Bears conversations now that he has Hampton along side.

They finally clean up the mess from one train wreck (the MNMS) and now have laid the ground work for another one. I really have no compelling reason to listen to this show. Holmes does nothing for me and I've had quite enough, thank you, of the '85 Bears.

A rather disappointing decision.
