Ya, but WSCR could step up with an offer he can't refuse. Then again, then they'd probably have to ask one of their sportradio hosts to take a paycut. Rooney was pissed that the White Sox didn't let him out of his contract a couple of years ago when the Cardinals job opened up, as he's from Missouri. Time will tell.... Kind of odd that he used to work for the Twinkies and his last year with them they won a World Series also. |

Is it possible that the Score wants to put its own unique imprint on White Sox broadcasts by refusing to re-sign Rooney? We've seen it happen before; when the Bears broadcast rights changed from WBBM-AM to WGN back in the 80's, Joe "Deuce Backfield" McConnell was replaced by Wayne Larrivee...when the rights changed hands again more recently, Wayne "mysteriously" took the job with the Damn Cheeseheads (hard-core Bears fan here; I refuse to use the "P" word). As an aside, the Cardinals are facing the same situation as they are headed to a new radio home. Could there be a "trade" in the works with former radio booth partners Wayne Hagin and John Rooney changing places? |

I was focusing on the transition between different companies, i.e., Tribune Co. (WGN) to Infinity/Viacom/CBS, etc. (WMAQ). The 'MAQ to 'BBM handoff was a baton pass between teammates in a relay. |

Hagin out, Rooney in on Cards broadcasts The shakeups continue with the Cardinals radio broadcasts. Wayne Hagin, who was hired three seasons ago to replace Jack Buck after the legendary Cards broadcaster died, has been fired. He’ll be replaced by John Rooney, a former St. Louis sportscaster who has spent the last 18 years broadcasting the Chicago White Sox on radio. Rooney will work with Mike Shannon, who will be back for his 35th season on the air. Rooney is "the cream of the crop," Fox Sports broadcaster Joe Buck said. "He’s a guy who has direct ties to the St. Louis area, a guy who was a dear friend of my dad’s and a guy who has fun while he broadcasts and does a great job with the play-by-play. He’s everything you’d want. "That being said, I thought Wayne did a great job and I thought he did a great job in a tough situation, taking over for my dad. I don’t think Wayne could have done a better job. I feel bad that didn’t work out." The changes come three months after the club announced that it is moving its radio broadcasts from KMOX, where they have been for the last 51 seasons, to KTRS. "I was very surprised," Hagin said. "I absolutely have fallen in love with St. Louis, with its people, with the baseball fans, and I wanted this to be my final spot. It was THE perfect place for me. "But events have changed that. I have a family to take care of, and I will take care of them." Rooney was the first choice for the job after Buck's death, when it was decided that Joel Meyers -- who had filled in during 2002 -- would not be the full-time replacement. But Rooney was under contract with the White Sox, and the search turned elsewhere. Hagin, who had been with the Colorado Rockies, ended up with the job. "It’s the age old line -- you don’t want to be the guy taking over for the guy, but you want to be the guy taking over for the guy who took over for the guy," Joe Buck said. "That’s the nature of it. "Wayne Hagin, I’m sure, is going to have teams lined up to sign him to do their radio. It would have been tough for anybody, I don’t care who it was, stepping into that situation. I don’t think Wayne could have handled it any better." Rooney ended up without a job in Chicago after the White Sox won the World Series last month, as that team also is switching flagship radio stations. “I’m not a bitter person,” Rooney told the Chicago Tribune at the time. “I don’t like holding grudges. I had a good run here.” Now Hagin has been dropped, just four months after Cardinals president Mark Lamping said the club was picking up his contract for 2006. Rooney had two stints at KMOX in the 1980s and also broadcast Mizzou basketball. "I think John is the kind of guy who has the ability to lighten the mood and have fun," Buck said. "He worked with a guy, Ed Farmer, who is cut from the same cloth as Shannon — you’re liable to hear anything. That’s what makes it fun." |

I met Rooney for the first time at the White Sox convention a few years ago. I was with my kids, and he was wrapping up some 'special radio show' wrapped around the Sox convention. At the time (after Jack Buck's death) it was reported he'd be the favorite as the Cardinals new announcer if he could get out of his White Sox contract. He couldn't get out of the contract. Anyways, there I am, just a fan, with my kids on each side and I give him the obligatory "You're awesome on the radio.... been listening for years.... I was glad to read that you won't be leaving the White Sox." He looks me dead in the eye and curtly replies: "I wish I felt that way too." ...then he went on to say how he grew up in Missouri, etc. etc... dream job.. ... Anyways, I wished the guy luck, as I do think he's a great announcer. But it was one of the oddest things. The guy doesn't know me from Adam and he's whining about his employers for not letting him out of his contract. ....and as any White Sox fan can attest, Hagin and Rooney almost sound exactly the same from a 'voice standpoint' - and they're moving to a new radio station. So in other words, a new flagship station stepped up and doubled his salary. Think about that for awhile.... |

it's not mitch, rooney wanted to go to STL years ago when the job opened and the Sox wouldn't let them talk He knew this from the start, I talked to Hawk before a game, and he knew about this months ago, that this was his dream job and he was offerred it |

John Rooney, who had broadcast White Sox games since 1988, signed a multiyear deal Friday with the St. Louis Cardinals that will pay him nearly twice as much as he made with the White Sox, according to industry sources. |
