Sporting News Radio to fold?

Post subject:  Sporting News Radio to fold?
A friend of mine who is PD from a Texas radio station reports that Sporting News Radio is really having financial struggles. The main problem is, they don't have the affiliate base to bring in revenues. Big possibility that they may end up folding in the near future.

Personally, I think it would make sense for Sporting News Radio to merge with Fox Sports Radio, since they seem to have the affiliation going with their respected, websites.

But I'd be more interested in knowing what WSCR would use for overnight programming if SNR actually does fold. They could go back to FSR, but WJOL-AM in Joliet is using it for their overnight programming (dunno if that matters or not)... and the other choice is Sports Overnight America from the Sports Byline network.

I foresee relatively inexpensive talent for local overnights... Now if Supes can find a way to sell the time for paid programming, then we might have something...

Didn't the Score go to syndicated overnight programming to save money? Help me out radio insiders; isn't it cheaper to pluck a satellite feed out of the air than it is to pay a live body even at the lowest on-air rate? So no matter what we may wish for (Grobber and T-Dub working the graveyard shift together), it's not gonna happen. Of the overnight network programs the Score has run, I always thought the Sports Overnight USA shows were the most tolerable with SNR a close second (one exception...Matt Speigel rocks!). You can keep those screaming Fox Sports goofs off my radio, thank you very much.

King - I used to work at SCR on Belmont Avenue and I never heard of "Sports Overnight USA." I was there when they were live and when they went to FOX. Then a couple years ago they went from FOX straight to SNR, so I don't think they ever ran Sports Overnight USA - maybe it was MVP. Anyway, yes it's cheaper to grab a satellite feed - it's FREE! So they'll never want to pay an overnight guy again - they are on a corporate mandate to "Keep The Head Count Down." Why give a guy 30k + vacation + benefits when you don't have to? A New York Times story a few years ago said that they are the biggest company in the world who gives the smallest percentage of full-time jobs. They were around 60% with the other 40% going to part-timers & per diems & paid interns & other pay-as-you-go type jobs.

Prior to Disney purchasing WMVP in 1998, the station use to air SportsLine with Steve Olken and Dave Wills from 7p until midnight. Then Sports Overnight America would air until 5am. This was back during the "AM 1000" days when Steve Cochran worked mornings, the media creatures were on middays, and Kevin Mathews worked afternoons.

Yes, it was yet another move to increase profits and decrease programming.
