Red Rush, the former Loyola b-ball announcer who called the Rambler's Championship game, passed away on Sunday. People are posting memories on the ramblerania.com board.

"Gonnella, it's swella!"

I call him Ajax because he cleans the glass! Big Fan I think you are refering to Red Mottlow.

Walt Williams is right, Red Rush never had a run in with Ditka, that was Red Mottlow.
Loyola won the National Title in 1963,the only Illinois Division One Hoops team ever to do so and Red's call was legendary. Red coined phrases such as "Swisheroo,he's got two" and "Gonnella is Swella Fella". Red also called DePaul basketball in the late 70's, Chicago Cougar WHA Hockey and of course worked with Hall of Famer Bob Elson from 1962-1970 on White Sox Radio, then the pair endured the 1971 season in Oakland working for Charlie Finley. I got to know Red very well, and in fact he hired me for an interesting gig in 1994. Red was the General Manager of the Roller Hockey International Chicago Cheetahs who were Co-Owned by the late Basketball Hall of Fame Legend George Mikan. Former Blackhawk great Al Secord played on the team which played at the UIC Pavilion. Red called me and asked if I would be interested in doing Radio for the Cheetahs. It was an easy answer. And why not, since I have called more games in the UIC Pavilion than anyone else-399 to date including UIC Basketball, and Hockey, the Cheetahs and of course the Chicago Sky. Red's colorful calls, and even more, his off the air colorful medifores will be missed! Red was not affraid to get into it with Refs after games if he thought they screwed the Ramblers. I saw him and get into yelling matches with Officials many times well after games! He backed down from nobody!
