"ESPN, the sports cable network run also by Disney, plans to also cut 200 jobs from its workforce of about 5,700 worldwide, an ESPN executive told Reuters. "

I can't say I'm surprised. Companies everywhere are laying people off left & right, and there's a disturbing new report from the U.S. Department of Labor where every state in the union has lost jobs. The news that "the Worldwide Leader" is trimming its workforce follows what has happened at CBS, NBC, ABC/Citadel Broadcasting, ClearChannel and other broadcast companies on both TV & radio across America, in addition to companies like Starbucks, Home Depot & many, many others. This recession is going to get worse before it gets better.

ESPN just announced a correction to the first memo, they are only going to layoff 199 people- they have already fired Mac.

Kind of sickens me that a bunch of production staff will get laid off to pay for the salary of that insight-less asshole Rick Reilly.

This seems weird, but believe it or not, Rick Reilly actually traded places with Dan Patrick. When D.P. left ESPN over a year ago, he in turn started writing Reilly's old column in Sports Illustrated when he's not hosting the tape delayed radio show late nights on 670 "The SCORE" locally. Reilly's column relocated in ESPN The Magazine, at the very back just like in SI, where Patrick's old column used to be. True story...

FIRED is too harsh a word. They elected not to pick up his option year.

They'll pay too - book it.

Actually, they'll pay in the local radio market - which to ESPN corporate is like a pimple on Chris Berman's ass.

He was fired. Not picking up his option was a polite term. No big deal, he was a pain in the ass emloyee whose ratings were falling and he's out. He got lazy, hell read his dumbass column and you can see he's still lazy. I sure his Book of Lists will be a big seller to the Mac ALS, but not too many more buyers will flock to it.
