I kinda wondered about this one myself. How much did Harry Caray's pay for this one? And why?

Factually speaking, Chris Rongey delivered sports updates starting at 5p this afternoon from SoxFest on 670 "The SCORE" & 670thescore.com. At the same time, other "SCORE" shows have been broadcasting live from Harry Caray's Tavern since 10a this morning and will be there through Midnight tonight in a marathon sponsored by Miller Lite, which so happens to be the White Sox official beer sponsor. As for SoxFest and WSCR the rest of the weekend, Brian "The Whipping Boy" Paruch is there from 9a-Noon followed by an extended "White Sox Weekly" until 3:45p with "The Ranger" & Ozzie Guillen, Jr. Saturday from the Palmer House downtown. Jesse Rogers, who has been holding court at Harry Caray's Tavern since 6p this eve on 670 AM, hosts a marathon broadcast Sunday from 9a-2p that leads into Westwood One's national broadcast of Super Bowl XLIII from Tampa. Ozzie Jr. joins Jesse from 11a on Sunday. Trust me..."The SCORE" has NOT forgotten about the White Sox.

Just trying to fit into Sox Nation.

And as much as I might be joking, this seems to be the Don Cooper show everytime he is on the air in any form

"I find it very funny, that people question us."

They signed an overweight 36 year old 'has been', trying to get the very last ounce of blood from the guy, they have their own out clause on him if he doesnt make the team, they announce he had elbow surgery in "The Fall" (When exactly is THE FALL?) and Cooper finds it funny that someone might be questioning that move??? How dare someone question that kind of move.

You wanna make the move and do it in hopes the guy brings something to the table and helps, fine. Yet listening to Cooper when they signed him actually get upset when people ask if this guy is going to start and cooper gets mad at them? lol

And you think I am ALWAYS a Dick?

Hatchetman, when I tuned in, 670 "The SCORE's" Jesse Rogers was holding court live from the Palmer House, site of "SoxFest '09", and he was supposed to be on between 9a-2p before Westwood One's live coverage of Super Bowl XLIII down in Tampa.

Tommy Williams is still very much alive, but he broadcasts on a low-power station these days in Northwest Indiana as far as I know. Hatchetman, you might have been listening to Westwood One's Tommy Tighe & Boomer Esiason in the early stages of the radio network's Super Bowl pregame, which 670 AM started airing at 2p yesterday.

It's when the Cubs enter the playoffs.

bigfan, just about every team in baseball, just about every single season, will acquire at least one guy (usually at minimal risk) that is injury-prone/old/seemingly-useless in hopes they get something out of him. It happens EVERY...SINGLE...YEAR. All Don Cooper does is stick up for his players and let them know he thinks they're good (whether they are or not). That's what a good coach does. He builds them up and defends them. Just like every other coach does in every other sport. His style is more direct then other guys, but so what?

And "overweight" is usually irrelevant when it comes to pitchers.

I gotta tell you, though, when it comes to Sox stuff on this board, you've taken the bat to the horse about 700 times too many. I don't read the Cubs section here much, but I hope you're as obnoxiously relentless there as you are here.

If the Cubs signed Colon and tried to tell me this guy is my 4th or 5th starter, I would would be hammering them from top to bottom 10 times worse than the Sox, because I would be pissed off and not just laughing about it.

Cooper can defend his players all he wants, but to laugh at people (Sox fans) like they don't have a clue because they question this move as a solutiuon is like calling fans idiots.

And when I really start hammering the Sox you will know, because I often just bring up points that raise the ire of the Sox nation, without ever saying anything bad. Hmm, doesn't a guy on your radio station do that every time he is on the air now as a "basbeall analyst"?

Good to see Ranger has fallen right in line with the Sox army, because as well all know 'everyone is out to get the Sox'

let's see: make the playoffs => good attendance => raise ticket prices => lower payroll => can't criticize ownership

When did I say that "everyone is out to get the Sox"? When did I even imply it? I don't think everyone is out to get the White Sox. In fact, I think there has only been one member of the media in this town that has been "out to get them" and he's no longer employed in this city. And that only happened because he had a personal issue with some people over there. I don't get caught up in the Sox-don't-get-enough-positive-media-attention thing. I couldn't care less about it, to be perfectly honest. I just think if you're going to criticize a team, don't let personal issues be the foundation of it.

Don't assign me to an idea I don't support just so you can make your argument look better. Leave that to the "journalists" at FNC.

So going back to the Colon move: it's a standard MLB low risk signing with potential reward. It's nothing to freak out about one way or the other. It's nothing to be excited about, nor is it anything over which to be furious. Guys like him are brought in to be hopeful back-end rotation guys ALL THE TIME around baseball. Come on, bf, you know that. And it happens because there just aren't enough good major league starters to go around. Besides, all I've heard them say is that if he's healthy and effective, he'll be in there. So why would that make anyone angry?

Are you in the wrong thread or something? Did anyone here say that? Maybe I missed it.

But to your point: good attendance (but not great attendance) last year does not equal good attendance this year. And it's this year's attendance that will account for this year's payroll. Something a lot of people don't realize is that season ticket sales are not what they were in 2006. We all keep hearing about the Sox 95% renewal of season tix for 2009. That's true. But it's 95% renewal of the tix from last year when there were about 15,000 sold....not 2006 when there were around 22,000 sold. Plus, they'll probably sell much fewer walkup tickets this year than last. And sponsorships are down (even from the radio broadcast standpoint this is true) and suites are down. In case you haven't noticed, the economy blows. Hence, the payroll holding pretty steady this year.

So we should just put on a Columbia intern so you could tear them apart anyway? So the options are:

A) Pay somebody to host so Hatchetman can post about how bad they are.
B) Air syndicated programming for free so Hatchetman can post about how bad they are.

If you were a PD, what would you pick? And yes, I'm being an a-hole.

couple of thoughts:

attendance usually increases a year after the playoffs. so you are saying there will be NO new season ticket holders in 09?

payroll is currently not going to be steady after dumping uribe, crede, swish, vasquez. What is that about $20 mil?

if demand is going to go down, why raise prices? is that what normal companies do? have you been to a retail store lately? seen all those 50-75% off signs?

ANY local programing is better than some network idiot talking about last night's UMASS game. I wouldn't rip a low paid intern anyway. Christ I didn't know that syndicated programing was FREE. you get what you pay for i guess.

Ozzie Guillen Jr. - See, that's the problem with fans. They don't know shit. Ranger, what's that guys name? Matt atoola?

Ranger - Matt Abattacola?

Ozzie Guillen Jr. - Yeah. The Score should put him on more.

Well it's not completely free, but basically it's already paid for and the station can use it whenever they want without extra charge.

Come on, man, retail stores are COMPLETELY different in how they operate than MLB teams. They have inventory they have to get rid of to make room for new inventory. They do sales and price cuts constantly. That's why it's called "clearance"...they're trying to clear out space for new stuff. Baseball teams don't do ticket clearances.

The the Sox are responsible for about $94 million at this point, which is lower than last year, but still really good for a team that is in the middle of the pack in terms of attendance. They are expecting less revenue this year, as most other teams are. Yes there will be new season ticket holders but there will also be many that drop their tickets (like I said in a previous post, suites will be down, too, which is a huge source of revenue). There will also be fewer sponsors. But, regarding the season tickets, those numbers will not go up much, if at all. Despite the playoff appearance. In fact, it looks like they're going to drop. They will make less money this year. Attendance doesn't ALWAYS increase after a playoff season. Tickets are going up a dollar or two. It's not that much.

There is a simple fact. The Sox do not make nearly the same money a lot of other teams make, yet they have an extremely competitive payroll. Teams that are 16th in attendance don't normally have a top 5 payroll like they have the last few years.

Ranger makes very good points. The Sox aren't cheap. Haven't been cheap this entire decade. They are middle of the pack in attendance. Ranger is right. I think, however, they make more money than most teams in TV money. Chicago is a huge market. They do have about 30-35 WGN games. That's a huge advantage other teams don't have. A superstation and a big city for the Comcast/WCIU games. Gotta think the Sox make more in TV than most teams. Yankees and Red Sox have big TV money. They both own their networks.

The Sox do not expect to make money most years. They do try to break even. During their Reinsdorf years they have had 2 or 3 cash calls and they easily raised the cash. They did so because the value of the organization has increased anywhere from 20 to 30 times.

Investors who put in $500K in 1980, now have an investment worth about $15 million, while it would be nice to get a check each year, not one of the investors got in the deal for an annual return and none of them need the money either.

So, just as when they needed cash investors put money in, when they had extra cash it went out and each year gets treated seperately.

Thus the base each year on expected revenues and expenses.

Only the Bulls have so much money they can do whatever they want.

Like it or not , this was a huge reason MOST investors had no issues with pushing cash into the White Sox, because they were making so much money on the Bulls, the Sox meant nothing. A large number of investors are in both deals. The Bulls brought in so much money, the paid off the loan on the UC to the Fuji Bank in just four years!

You are correct, Beardown...The Yankees & Red Sox actually started the trend of starting their own regional sports networks, and the White Sox have about 25% invested in Comcast SportsNet. More & more teams, such as the Mets and SNY for example, are cutting out the middleman and putting a great deal of their games on a regional sports network they can call their own.

It'd be nice if Ricketts sold his stake in Comcast to Reinsdorf and just made WGN the exclusive home of the Cubs. Weeknight games on ESPN could be moved to CLTV or kept on channel 9 without WGN America. In a perfect world.
