Post subject:  Producers Turned Hosts on "The SCORE"

Fans, I've been listening to a great deal of 670 "The SCORE" lately for Chicago sports talk. One of the things I've noticed in listening are the younger sounding voices they've been utilizing at night and on the weekends. Over the last 3 weeks or so, I've heard Matt Weber, producer of "Hampton & Holmes", get some airtime hosting shows before & after DePaul basketball broadcasts on weekend afternoons. "Webby" will be holding court on his own Saturday afternoon before the DePaul/Pittsburgh basketball game between 1-5:45p, and will team again with John "Rock" Mamola Sunday after Westwood One's NCAA Basketball between 4-8p according to the schedule at 670thescore.com. Besides "Webby" & "Rock", other "SCORE" producers have also hosted shows at night or on weekends such as Matt Abbatacola, Jason Goff & even Joe Ostrowski. In case you're wondering, Goff is penciled in tonight after NIU/Central Michigan hoops around 8p or so, and is scheduled to work a 6 hour marathon shift Friday night 6p-Midnight when Miller Lite sponsors an all-day, all-night live broadcast at Tommy Nevin's in Naperville. I don't know what I enjoy more...Goff doing "Man's World" or Abbatacola doing "Grandma Trivia" when either of these guys get a chance to host.

the reason all those guys are getting play on the Score is simple...they all have made or are planning on making a CSFMB event...

Mitch is paying attention to such things, of course...

I'm not so sure about that. I wonder if it has to do with cheap labor & that "The SCORE" tends to hire its on-air talent from within...

Yes and yes. But it also gives you something to listen to where you can hear the hosts improving as they get more mic time. This was something I enjoyed from the early years of the station, in the 820 days.

Kind of like a farm system for radio. Maybe the 6-8 slot is triple A. Its disrespects the listeners when they start a 'rookie' who is raw and bad in a good time slot. Actually, most of them stay bad, but once in a while , some of these same hosts figure it out over the years. Tomorrow's Bob Costa'ses, Macs, or Bernsies in the making.

Except there's no place for them to go. Let's see: Greenie left, Hood, Tommy Williams, Bernsie. And of course, Lawrence, although I still want a recount on that one...

I am prepared to deal with the consequences, but I laugh my butt off everytime I hear, "Here's lookin' at you, beaver" from Grandma trivia...I guess I've just outed myself that I, too, am a member of the B&B ASL...I happen to miss Last Call with Drinky and I'd like it better if he and Goff hosted more in the evenings/weekends...its good radio to me.

Niel, I wish those two were on a lot more...Abbatacola & Goff were terrific together, but why did management break up their act? I thought talk radio was better when you've got 2 voices, but it must have been $$$$ in the eyes of CBS Radio & "SCORE" management to have those 2 hosting shows solo.

SHARK, any of the hosts you mentioned in your first post would be an improvement in the 10-12 slot. Or the 12-2 slot. Or anytime after 6 pm. Hell, at this point, they could blow up every show except B&B, and M&H (they're starting to grow on me), and the station would (could) be improved immensely. Not sure why they don't let some of these guys have more air time. Does anybody really think that Goff, Ostrowski, Paruch, Matty, Rock and Webby, any of 'em, could possibly be worse on the radio than Hampton?

If I wanted to hear Chicago's answer to "Stuttering" John Melendez, I'll listen to classic Howard Stern or watch "Private Parts", albeit very closely...That's how brutal Hampton sounds, and I wish "SCORE" management would realize that the guy sucks as a co-host & finally pull the plug!
