Anyone remember this quote?

$750K a year and no overhead expenses v. No salary and tons of overhead and headaches on COMCAST ?

It's a tough tough choice?

Remember the time he said he quit radio to persue his life long passion of being a sports betting tout?

It's getting so I can hardly trust what he says anymore. :(

I know, should say work with a lot of people who make a lot of money and suck at what they do, north falls into that catagory. His talent was to bulshit his way into a huge contract, fine, he got it, he fell on his face, that money will never come his way again because of that.

North has has said he is great businessman a million times, well....why, how? He hasnt done crap since he left the score bt put money out to get his mug on the webio and comcast, i know he isnt making a profit, great sale guys go out and get big time sponsers, NDHS and Rosemont are not on that list, he is small time, its his ego that is huge, but its about to be crushed in a few months if the show continues to suck and not bring in money, because right now, it isnt.

North made a comment the other day that he would more then likely still be on the radio if it wasnt for the economy......i though the economy was ok, now its bad? Pappy and his delusional world, its something special.

North refuses to take the blame for his fall. It is always everyone else's fault. When it was going good, it was all because of him.

Mr. Irrrelevant is a POS and is deserving of everything that has happened to him.

I begin at "he's not good" and after awhile I get to humility. Of course, "bombastic" is a part of the personna.

A huge part of the resentment of North stems from his lack of humility. He had a great run in the '90s but, Jesus, he didn't invent sports radio as he seems to believe. In contrast, I just watched the final episode of Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and there's a guy who achieved a hell of a lot in his medium but maintains his humility and understands that he owes a lot to those who came before him & his staff of writers and production people.

North did more to shape sports talk radio on chicago than o'brien did to shape the late night talk industry. Conan may be good, but he is purely dirivitive. North, on the other hand, ushered in modern sports talk in this city.

It's a far more meaningful change that what you described.

North's work was revolutionary.

Don't be thick. There is a clear difference in talk radio pre SCORE operating and post SCORE beginning operations. North was at the forefront of this change and arguably defined style of the station in the first decade.

most people would agree that when north first started on the score he was tolerable. most would even say they enjoyed listening to him and jiggs. he gave a fan's perspective in an annoying, loud mouth way, but he wasn't mr. bigtime ego yet. then when he got a little recognition and some leverage, he turned into the piece of shit he is today and has been for the last 10 years. he wanted his own show and he wanted to be in charge and guess what? he sucked on his own. and when it all fell apart last year, he was so desperate, he came out with dontfademe to literally con any loyal listeners he had left. "It was always my dream to take peoples money fer givin dem my sports picks" If he had any dignity left, he flushed it down the toliet with this scam. mike nort had a good career, made a shitload of money, and now he is a desperate, washed up con man shaking his cup at old friends and sponsors.

Maybe, but when dumbass meatball was the only thing on the menu, that's what you had. Sports radio has taken a somewhat more intellectual path. I would argue that Bernstein has been as revolutionary in sports talk radio as North. What North was doing at the time was little more than an extension of what Chris Russo was doing, or what you heard on any local post game show. People don't need the meatball effect to appreciate good sports talk, and yes I'll agree that the score was marketed as such in the beginning. I guess I'll give North some credit for that.

Bernstein, like Conan, is good but purely derivative. Rather than revolutionary, he is closer to counter revoluationary (as he has absolutely no use for fan opinions other than as what Beardown correctly identifies as a prop). You can mark a change in sports talk in this city when North began broadcasting. There is no identifiable change in what Bernstein produces with what was produced earlier by the SCORE. He may do it better, but he is doing the same thing.

[. In reality, I doubt history will consider either to be revolutionary. I think to be considered that, for one thing your concept is usually copied, and you would likely still be relevant a mere decade later.

Look back to the early days of the SCORE and it was prepared to present the same kind of product that was offered in the Chet era. They hired the reporters and experienced hosts who were going to be guest intensive. They would be the high priests of sport, receiving the word of god and translating it for the ignorant masses with no room for the masses to translate for themselves. Guys like Shaer, Hanley and Boers would have been more than happy to never take a call.

North made the SCORE the populist voice that it became. His lack of experience allowed him to break the incredibly tired paradigm of Chet radio. The others followed only after they recognized the success North attained. That is why I say North defined the SCORE style of entertainment, which changed the style of radio in this city. That's revolutionary.

but no one had done it before, and the SCORE was poised to continue the tradition

Look, I'm not saying the guy ushered in a new age of human history. He did change his little area of the world.

Bruce Wolf as Chet Chit-Chat was taking a very irreverent, humorous look at the sports scene when Mike North was still sweeping poppy seeds off his hot dog stand floor. I'm still trying to figure out what this great revolution North ushered in was. As has been stated here before, I'm personally offended by this notion that he's somehow representative of the "real Chicago fan." He's a semi-literate, loud-mouth meatball turd. If you think that represents you, so be it.
