If you didn't know, I've been a Murph hater for years now here but I'm feeling kind of bad for the guy right now. First of all he's become crazy paranoid over the years and thinks everybody is out to get him at his place of work. He goes to work every day thinking people are laughing at but it still has to be difficult. Now you completely lose your time slot after practically starting the stati him (and they actually are). Nobody talks to him or is friendly and you know you'll have at least one uncomfortable exchange with a co-worker that day. Despite your tenure and consistently good ratings (even after being bumped around constantly) your life and marriage has been constantly disrupted with the slot changes you had no control over. Yes I know he signed on for thison and are losing it to two shows that rip you on air all the time and will continue to gloat about it. I know he's reaping what he sowed but that has to be a tough way to live every day. He acts a lot like Bill O'Reilly with the paranoia and sociopath personality. I wonder if it has to do with being in public or something. Yes he's a dick and I hate his show and opinions but on a human level I kind of feel for the guy. |

Now the jerk has time to eat his long banana at lunch. And for the record, Teddy will be listening nights and weekends. Hard to feel sorry for such a sour man. And now he doesn't have to be face-to-face with Mully either. |

But if he stays on and does evenings and weekends, he might actually be happier. I don't think he liked having his show reduced to two hours. I could be totally wrong, but this might actually be good for him. |

I'm sorry....I'm usually a very empathetic person but... GOOD RIDDANCE MURPH! The world is stupid enough....every time a knucklehead goes away, it's a good thing. Not to mention that the Score had a giant black hole in the middle of it's programming schedule every day. |

Don't want to go into specifics, but he and I are somewhat close on the scale of "degrees of separation" - never met him, but have heard enough times that he's a good guy away from the mic that I can't help but believe it. I hear you on this, Hawkeye. On a very basic human level, Murph's troubled tenure at the Score is difficult to understand, especially if it's true that, as Terry Boers says, Murph brought the bulk of it upon himself. I don't really care to speculate on all the behind-the-scenes feuds, but when you take that as background for the schizophrenic on-air persona, it is kind of sad. It would be consistent with Murph's attitude and demeanor to say "screw 'em" to the Score and I sort of hope he does; an easy denouement here might be if he lands at WGN talking baseball. |

Post subject: | Re: Anyone else feel bad for Murph? |
Hi all and thanks Panther. First off, I just want to say I am estatic right now. I am so damn happy that Murph got his comeuppance. I feel so vindicated and I will explain that in a bit. For those of you that feel bad for him, I will not tell you how to feel but I will try to shed some light on some of the Murph that I got to know. I worked with him probably longer than any producer at the Score so I do know a thing or two most probably don't. If you still feel bad for him so be it and if you don't there will be no arguments from me. I also want to apologize in the beginning if this post gets long winded. First of Murph as a Person: http://score670.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=28922&p=451628#p451628 this is just a story that may give you some insight into our relationship. Now on to other issues that is the one and only Murph. The only similarity between his on-air persona and off-air is that he is weird. Everything else is fake on-air. Here are some differences that I saw working with him for about three years. The man is paranoid as fuck. He whispers because he is afraid that other shows are going to steal all his great ideas. It's so annoying and creepy. Here is a story that explains what a douche he is: One day were having on Bill Jauss at 1:00 and of course their is an update til 1:03. So we call him at about 12:50 for a ten minutes heads up. In the break Murph tells us that we have to call him at 1:00 exactly not even a minute later. So it 12:59 and Joe has the phone in his hand waiting for that clock to hit 1:00 to start dailing. All the sudden Murph starts yelling and bitching that all he asked for was for us to call him at one exactly. This fucktard acted like a child and he was wrong. The funny thing is no guest is going to give a shit about 3 minutes, but Murph obsessed over this shit. Heres more Murph: Dumbfuck doesn't realize that at any point producers can listen in to the host conversations during breaks, so he talks about a producer (who will go unnamed) and calls him Tyrone. More sure I got some. So Dusty is the manager of the Cubs and I have this idea of playing "Dynomite" from Good Times, every time Dusty makes another dumb managerial move. Murph shots this down by saying and I paraphrase here "Well I don't think so I'm worried some people, you know those people will not like it." Honestly, I didnt even think anything of something like that when I thought of the idea and if I would have worked at the Score when Terry Bevington was managing I might have proposed the same idea. Plus there were other times when he would use that line. And finally the time he called an African American Sambo once on the air, I thought it was pretty bad even if he did just slip up. The Everyday Hello: Okay this by far and away was the creepiest thing this fuck ever tried to make me do. He would expect me to say hi to him the moment I walked in the door and would get mad if I didn't. Heres the thing I would get there at 9:00 o'clock and start my daily routine. Get his folder ready, Check his endless emails, get the reads etc... So during this time I am going to run in to him or when done go find him and talk to him about what we should do for this show. But Murph took it as a personal slight that I wouldn't run over and say hi to his holiness the moment I walked in. He even had Mitch try to tell me that I should have Hi to him the moment I walk in. Crazy. More sure I could write a book on this douchebag. So their is a play and I think it might have been the AJ play in the 05 AL championship series (dropped third strike) and Murph is salvating at the mouth to get some former umpire on. Well breaking news procedes any guestlist and this would be considered breaking news. Any guests are open and its just who can get them. Mully and Hanley get the same idea and place a call with him. So now me and Andy have to try to explain that he might not get this former ump. Oh boy does Murph fly off the handle. Yelling Shit and Fuck kicking garbage cans. This is a grown man and really even if the ump was a great interview, this show was a gimme. The A.J. call come on its only a two hour show. Sure enough we end up getting him anyways. I may have the time wrong it could have been something different we need the ump on for but the rest is all true. Alright now that I shared those insights, I would just like to stat some facts that can't be disputed. I started on Murphs show when he was on nights and I believe it was in May 2005 (give or take a month) and finished in January 2008. I believe that encompasses 15 books, but I might be off a little. During that time the show never once lost to the competition and I believe was top five in our demo for at least 10 books. I might be wrong because I actually think it is higher number than that. I realize the competition was weak but it still is now too. I also know that on quite a few occasions Murph's ratings were so high he would get a ratings bonus. The first time he said it never happened before and I actually believe him but who knows. He also would throw a little my way which was nice but I still feel deserved considering my salary and quality of work. I also know on one occasion the ratings were so high that we finished second in the demo behind only the Spanish station. They are unbeatable by the way. Now one final moment with Murph, the day that I forgot to turn Stone's Mic on for a split second, we had a meeting to discuss the argument we had. I honestly would have made nice but the moment I walk in Murph chimes in "Thanks for stopping By". Now I'm on defensive but I feel that maybe I can still patch things up and move on. During the meeting it gets pretty heated and at one moment Murph says "You (refering to me) didnt mind when I was giving you those bonuses" and I say "Well I would like to think I played a part in those bonuses" and Murph responds "I guess we will see". I guess we did Murph, I guess we did. By no means am I saying that I was the sole reason for Murph's success during my time as a producer but I feel that I made a difference and I think it shows. His ratings have consistantly dropped and well now he is probably weekends until April when his contract expires or taking a big cut to host the baseball show left by Jesse and George. And I wish I was on a canyon yelling "VICTORY" like Johnny Drama, because this is great. Also great move by the Score, it is great to have Mac back and hopefully the Score too. I mean that, I've been a listener since its inception and now their is something worthy of listening to besides B and B. |

I'm sorry to see Murph lose his 12-2 time slot. I hope that WSCR finds him another time slot soon. I started listening to Murph back in the day when his show might only be 15 minutes long before the they signed off at sunset. Funniest stuff I had heard in years. His weekend shows were enjoyable and helped me get 'hooked' on the SCORE. That his show with Huebner was #1 in their time slot is a testament to his fan appeal. Want to thank Murph for many years of great sports radio and look forward to his new show. |

Not one bit. I don't feel sorry for someone who treats others like shit to finally be put down a peg or two. If he lands somewhere, great. If he doesn't? I'm not going to lose a second of sleep missing someone who feels that calling a person who has a different opinion than his when it comes to baseball, "A Sox fan." No Murph, just because someone doesn't feel Santo should be in the Hall of Fame or feels that adding another stat like "quality bullpen performance" is a waste of time does not automatically make them a fan of the White Sox. Jack Phelan might actually get business now that Mac might actually give the real web address instead of "You gotta...clap-clap...see Jack....clap-clap....dot COOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!" I wonder how pissing he'll be come next week. |

I got damned sick and tired of his Sox Fan or Cub Fan litmus test before a caller could express an opinion. He acted as if everybody in the damned audience was an emotional 12 year old and was incapable of being a BASEBALL FAN who could express an honest observation about either team. |

The guy's a proven asshole and shit-stirrer, for all his experience he's at best average in his sports knowledge, his voice is annoying (matters in radio, kids), he can't have a conversation without talking over people, and basically acts like a child whenever the wind blows the wrong way. He's not destitute financially. He has his family. He doesn't have a terminal disease. He got bumped ... perhaps (essentially) let go ... tough shit. He was there from day one, and despite his best efforts, managed to stay on the air and (dear God how?) still pull in ratings, but all his nonsense finally caught up with him, even if it was only because of attrition. If his marginal and marketable value were higher, he wouldn't be so casually tossed aside like the rubbish he is. Wish ill on him? No, of course not - God Bless him as much as anyone else. Feel sorry for that jerk of a person in any way? FUCK no! Everybody gets what they want, but not everybody ends up wanting what they get. |

Yeah you reap what you sow. I think Cy's post summed it up that Murph has burned so many bridges and made so many enemies with who he has worked with that not alot of tears will be shed for the guy. That being said I will be shocked if the SCORE lets him on the air over this next week so he can take veiled shots at the new show and let him be bitter on the air. Also and I hate to say this but I think Hit and Run will be better with Murph because I simply cannot listen to one minute of the sports whisperer. |

Murph working nights for cheap is an excellent thing because he's far better over a four or five hour show. The fact that he'll go scorched earth is probably good with Mitch, who seems to love hosts fighting with each other. I personally see Murph teaming with Fred and Webby teaming with Chet and perhaps Nort making a play for the 820 frequency or a comparable AM frequency. It would certainly make things interesting to have three full time sports talkers. |

You'd never know it from reading this board, but I do believe Murph had a pretty solid fan base out there. As even Cy admits, his ratings were always pretty good in whatever slot they put him in. Apparently he slipped in the most recent ratings when the whole station seemed to have gone down the toilet, but they canned him for one bad book? I just wonder how much all the other off-air nonsense contributed to this. Yes, he could be annoying and hokey at times, but overall I found his show a little different and kind of a refreshing mid-day break from most of the other shows out there. I felt that he did prepare and even on his worst shows, usually offered at least one interesting "angle" to think about in the sports news of the day. Congrats to Mac on the new gig, but "in my world" any move that increases Terry Boers' airtime by an hour doesn't exactly thrill me. In contrast to Murph, who, whether you liked his product or not, at least seemed to try, Boers just basically sits there--or at home--agrees with whatever Bernstein says, makes silly noises, and lies about his peeps and forgets to check his messages when he could have broken the Cutler story. But, of course, the burning questions are: what now for John Dewan and the Duke? |

Definitely has been a more relaxed show in the past at that time slot, and he's better able to to pace himself to a 4-hour slot. Say what you want, but timing is key to Murph. He's sort of like a character actor that way... |
