WSCR has its eye on FM dial Suntimes SPORTS TALK RADIO | HD frequency may just be first step for home of the White Sox Within 30 days, sports-talk WSCR-AM (670) expects to be simulcasting on one of adult hits WJMK-FM's (104.3) three HD frequencies, according to CBS Radio Market Manager Rod Zimmerman. Both WSCR, the radio home of the White Sox, and WJMK are CBS Radio properties. The simulcast means WSCR fans who have access to an HD radio receiver will be able to hear the station's programming with a much higher quality sound than that now available on the AM frequency. But sources familiar with developments think the move to add an HD frequency at WSCR could be the first step toward a full-blown simulcast of WSCR on WJMK. In October 2007, CBS Radio made a similar move in Detroit, where its AM sports outlet is now simulcast on an FM frequency. Such a move at WSCR would likely have the immediate effect of boosting the station's ratings, which have been languishing. The addition of the HD simulcast, by itself, is not expected to substantively affect WSCR's ratings. Though Chicago is a sports market second to none, in the April Arbitron ratings book, WSCR pulled a 1.8 rating Monday through Sunday -- good enough for only 26th place in the market in the key 25- to 54-year-old demographic. The numbers were disappointing, even though the April book included the first full month of White Sox broadcasts. |

Does anyone even have an HD radio? If it came with your car that does not count. |

Desperate men do desperate things. They already have AM stereo to 38 states & Canada. This is a band-aid to save the suits jobs. Also see Ed Sherman today: Webio wants AM/FM - viewtopic.php?f=64&t=33266 |

On an all-talk station, I'm really more concerned with the quality of the programming than the quality of the sound. |

No one needs to buy stations right now... |

This is like Coors advertising the wonderful features their cans have instead of the quality of their beer. |

When 104.3 WJMK dropped its oldies format to become the jockless rock hybrid that is "JACK FM" about 3 years or so ago, I remember a Rob Feder column and interview with the controversial former CEO of CBS Radio, the former Infinity Broadcasting, Joel Hollander. He thought that WJMK's oldies playlist was getting stale and strongly defended pulling the plug on such a popular format. While "JACK FM" is still "Playing What They Want" all day, all night, the ratings they've gotten haven't been too good, even before they hired & fired Steve Dahl in morning drive. If WJMK dropped "JACK" to simulcast 670 The SCORE's sports talk format, I wouldn't be surprised given what they did in Detroit. |

Why does the Arbitron website show for April 2009 show the Score (WSCR-AM), with a 2.0 tied for 23'rd and the article has WSCR as a 1.8 tied for 26'th? WMVP-AM has a 1.8 and is ranked 27'th, did either the Arbitron Website or the article (possibly switch WSCR's numbers with WMVP) make an error, or is there something I don't understand? http://www.arbitron.com/home/ppm_data.htm (When you enter the link, click the Chicago market to see what I am talking about) |

Rod Zimmerman, the Market Manager of CBS Radio's Chicago stations and generally manages WBBM-AM Newsradio 780, has shot down rumors that 670 The SCORE will soon simulcast on 104.3 "JACK FM"... |

They added WJMK-HD2 to the station ID, so. |

Curious Hair wrote: They added WJMK-HD2 to the station ID, so. I noticed that, Curious. If you have an HD Radio, they say the SCORE's sports talk format sounds even better on the second WJMK HD channel...CBS Radio, parent company of WSCR 670 The SCORE, 104.3 "JACK FM" & WBBM Newsradio 780, have just added an HD Radio channel for WBBM-AM's all-news format. Those who wish to hear Newsradio 780 in crystal clear FM quality can tune into WCFS 105.9's HD2 channel. |

Big props to the CBS cluster management for allocating HD2 channel on 104.3 to the Score. Fantastic sound. |

Rod fired the Fresh/US99 PD yesterday, and Fresh is voice-tracking afternoon drive out of Cleveland now, so it wouldn't surprise me if the simulcast is a-comin'. |

That would be Bill Gamble, the longtime programmer at other Chicago radio stations including Q101 & 94.7 FM when the station was known as classic rocker CD 94.7 and as the many rock variations known as The ZONE before working in Denver prior to returning here to program US 99.5 & the latest radio disaster that is Fresh 105.9. (Moment of silence for CD 94.7 and The ZONE please...Thank you.) That being said, CBS Radio bosses plan on hiring replacements for both US 99.5 & Fresh 105.9 in the coming months, and hope that WCFS in particular can find its footing in the Arbitrons real, real soon. |
