June 13, 2009 SUN-TIMES SPORTS STAFF Chicagosportswebio.com, the fledgling online alternative to sports-talk radio, is in upheaval after the firing Friday of Mike North, the former WSCR-AM (670) host and one of the driving forces behind the new Internet site.
North said David Hernandez, CEO of Spectrum Entertainment Group, fired him, his wife BeBe and vice president of sales and merchandise Jeff Schwartz after they asked about the financial health of the operation. North said 12 checks issued to Webio employees bounced last week and as many as 30 bounced this week.
Hernandez never offered an explanation, North said, and Friday he notified North of his dismissal via e-mail.
North, whose ''Monsters in the Morning'' TV show on Comcast SportsNet was simulcast on Webio, said he is exploring the possibility of gaining control of the Internet outlet from Hernandez and hopes to keep it going. ''It's my baby,'' North said. ''The product is great, and the personalities we have are great.''
