It just cost me a grand total of $3.95 to retrieve this from the Tribune archives. Mike's partner is a prince of a guy, ain't he? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For some 60 years, Esther Pappadopoulos worked a minimum-wage job in a Chicago candy factory, in time managing to accumulate savings of several hundred thousand dollars with her frugal lifestyle. With the money earning little interest in a passbook savings account, Pappadopoulos' son and daughter turned to a trusted family friend to find a better return, though they still wanted a conservative, risk-free investment. Their friend, David J. Hernandez, then a vice president of operations at Columbia National Bank at 5250 N. Harlem Ave., offered them an investment he said was usually reserved for corporations. He promised them returns of up to 10 percent a year or more and assured them the money would be safe. Over time, Pappadopoulos, a Greek native in her 80s, and her son and daughter invested $528,000 in the corporate trust accounts. But there was a problem, according to federal prosecutors. There was no such investment. Hernandez spent the money, with literally hundreds of thousands of dollars going toward tickets to Bulls games and other Chicago sporting events for himself and dozens of friends, federal authorities said. On Wednesday in federal court, Hernandez, 38, weeping and apologetic, was sentenced to 2 years and 10 months in prison for a fraud conviction. Pappadopoulos and her family weren't Hernandez's only victims, said Assistant U.S. Atty. Jacqueline Ross, who prosecuted the case. Ronald Zabadal also entrusted his elderly parents' financial affairs to Hernandez after he had been diagnosed with leukemia and was going out of town to undergo chemotherapy treatment. Zabadal's mother, Lillian Geneser, was 78 and suffering from multiple sclerosis and other serious ailments, while his father, Joseph, 86, was blind, partially deaf and a cancer victim. Ross said that Hernandez befriended Lillian Geneser, calling her "Grandmother" during frequent visits to her home. He brought her flowers when she passed her driver's test. The couple lost $83,000 in the fraud by Hernandez. Even after Columbia National Bank discovered the fraud in 1996 and notified the Genesers, the couple didn't understand that they had lost all their money, Ross said. Hernandez was able to retrieve the bank's letter from the Genesers and then lied to Zabadal about its contents, Ross said. Only months later, when federal authorities contacted the family, did they realize they had lost the $83,000, Ross said. A third family also lost money in Hernandez's scheme, authorities said. In addition to the 34-month prison term, U.S. District Judge Paul Plunkett ordered Hernandez, formerly of Chicago, to pay full restitution to the bank--$723,397. Columbia National Bank, which was bought by LaSalle Bank in 1996, covered the families' losses. Hernandez has already served 14 months in custody. He pleaded guilty to the federal fraud charge in April. He also faces a state charge of child abduction for allegedly kidnapping his two young children during a divorce fight with his wife in 1997. Ten days after disappearing, Hernandez was arrested near Phoenix with the children, said David Goldman, the ex-wife's attorney. |

Congrats, Pappy's Crappy, you just did what the North's, the webio staff and every "mail it in reporter" in town didn't even try to do. |

Incredible. $3.95 and North could have saved dozens of people from the unemployment line and himself from what should be his third strike. |

You think Pappy's Crappy will be credited for breaking the story once our lazy media gets a hold of this? I mean, with so much garbage on TV and the papers, some local reporter could have made a name for him or herself for breaking this. Not that it's the most amazing news but it is BREAKING A STORY |

It is certainly a better story than when either 2,5 or 7 did an investigative report and found, with a black light, THAT THERE WAS SEMINAL FLUID ON BED SPREADS IN CHICAGO HOTEL ROOMS. |

This is unbelievable. So he served time in jail? And no one bothered to look into this guy? That's amazing. As someone posted in another thread, its amazing that the medial never even bothered to look into this guy. Guy shows up out of nowhere and funds a radio venture that snatches several known members of the media away from compeitors and not a single sports writer in town thought to look into it. That just shows you how bad our local sportswriters are. Fucken Rick Telander would rather throw out another article about driving his kid to college then spend 15 minutes searching the newspaper articles for a single key word. North should go to jail for this as well since he vouched for this criminal. |

So there really is no possibility North knew about it? I mean maybe he's so dumb that he knew about it and like a battered wife thought "this time would be different" It's just so hard to believe that with all this stuff out there about Hernandez and so easily accessible (great work by SiD but yeah probably took like 5 minutes right?), he wouldn't know anything. And on top of it it's not just Norths ass on the line but obviously Webby and a host of others who put their trust in him. It's just so hard for to believe that with a business venture of this scope and with all the money involved, you wouldn't even do the most basic of "covering your ass". Even if it's just innocent Mike North being so trusting, yeah he's starting to look like the biggest fucking idiot on the planet, if he didn't already. |

When the F.B.I. is at the door of your business...the bus for the Federal Prison is getting an oil change. David Spada can now practice in Federal Court!!!!! Come on, Dave....rack up a jury for this Hernandez clown..... You may have to cross examine Chicago "celebrity" Mike North when he testifies for the Government against Hernandez!!!! Look at the potential for your new radio commercials..... Hope YOU don't have to become a Government witness and not get this real shot at trial work. |

PC - thanks to you and your four bucks and for sharing that knowledge ... I'm sure it's appreciated by more than stopped to say so. ASFB - Exceptionally well put ... hell, I still gleefully have my Buffone/North signed football (The Wiseguys - North was pleased I asked him to add that as I recall), but North just chipped-away at anything and everything that was what made him so popular; damnable shame, really. |

Norths a dumb ass but these guys that left their jobs could have forked out the $4. I heard a lot of the Mac/Spieg show yesterday and Mac talked about the offer he had there. I wonder how close he came to that decision. Why didnt North, the webio crew, Mac and others that were friends and family of he folks that worked there or were offered, couldnt find the spare change and the five minutes to do this. I was in management for Sears back in the early 90's and we did background checks on the the guys that made $6 an hour. Something just doesnt add up. My theory- North when questioned about this guy ("Who is this guy Mike?") told all he convinced "We did one of dem background checks. He's AG! Knowing full well they didnt do shit. He saw green and he saw redemption. Once again, it was all about Mike. North can blame Hernandez, Score management or whoever but when its all said and done, there is only one person to blame. |

The worst part of this whole scenerio is the MF'r dragged in a bunch of others to. They are responsible for their own and actions and decisions too...but almost everyone involved with this deal "saw green" and ran for it. It happens. |

Pappy...I didn;t get to it on the show...had it in my pile, but time got away from us. Shared it with many in the building though. General feeling amongst the more analytical is that North had to know far more than he's letting on. But who the hell knows. |

Oh hell he knew more, spaceball and bebe knew more, North is just doing the dumb act because he has a idiot for a attorney and north thinks by playing the dumbass, he will walk away without any stress from this, but like Bernsie said today, being stupid can get u into a whole lot of trouble, he can say he didnt know, but if he was suppose to know certain things and negelected to do so, he will be in a bit of hot water. There is so much more to this. I am not wishing bad things for pappy, but this wont be something he can just shout over people to get out of, he has questions to answer. |
