I've noticed that there aren't too many fans of Laurence Holmes on this message board?

Why all the hatin' - the guy has paid his sportsradio dues....

I think Laurence is a breath of fresh air, he's not afraid to try new bits - and has cognizant thoughts. I'm a big fan of "The Pulse".

Typical response from a dopey guest when someone asks a legit question.

I would guess that people don't like LH for the same reasons JHood is disliked....arrogance. Confirm/deny/elaborate?

Being a newbie to this board, I often wondered the same thing about why people don't like Holmes. There are the obvious targets of hatred, but I never thought LH was among them.

Any info/clarification would be appreciated.

I don't think Laurence is disrespectful whatsoever to callers - unless they're brutally stupid. I'm just a bit miffed why there are so many personal attacks on the guy on this board. I thought the Me & Z Show was pretty damned solid.

Speaking of which... I found Zampillo the Ape Boy's whereabouts.

Look at the ass clowns Mr. Program Director is presiding over now in Motown:

The majority of the hate on the board comes from LH posting here claiming that he broke 4 stories. Things spiraled into name calling and all sorts of unimportant nonsense.

The reason that i dont like him revolves around his claims of being a player on the air, mostly back with Zampillo. Most guys i know that pull in lots of trim dont feel the need to brag about it. They let their actions speak not the words.

Larry is good when it comes to reporting. When he gets to do a show he is terrible. He plays the "I'm a stud" routine. I've seen him on TV a couple times. The guy looks like your typical loud mouth dork. I think he is 30. So the young guy maverick thing loses its luster as that age. I don't think that women fall for that ego driven crap when you reach your 30's. It's no longer cool.

I wouldn't say that I dislike Holmes--rather, he just bores me. His personality strikes me as a classic case of arrested development. The guy's jr. high school understanding of women, his frequent boasting about his marginal athletic exploits, and his inability to break free from his mundane college experience at DePaul all identify him as a comically provincial personality with a limited "up side" as a radio host. Abbatacola has achieved far more as a radio host with far fewer opportunities.

I was listening to Larry on a show a couple of weeks ago and he described himself as a guy with a tempor who will throw a punch if provoked. Guys like that always get little respect from me. I'm sure the mouth breathers love that type of attitude.

I used to like the Undergroud as overnight radio, but he gets annoying. He always brings in the race card and usually has a topic on that. Then he tries to go outside of the box to spark something. Proposing that Buerhle be moved to bullpen for the entire playoffs towards the end of last year, dumb.

I can't believe someone that looks like this would have the nerve to claim to be a "player". Can black guys be geeks? Cause this guy is a fucking geek.
Image

Several years ago I heard him doing an interview and he said, in reference to himself, "as someone who is also part of the coaching fraternity...". I was later told that he was part of some H.S. coaching staff. Playing catch with the 15 year-old 3rd string QB does not make you "part of the coaching fraternity" any more than North pushing a hot dog cart allows him to say he used to be in the "restaurant" business.

Speaking as a guy who knows. If you hav a smile like Larry it is best not to show the teath. When hearing this guy on the radio you would think he is a hard core bad ass. When you look at that picture you realize what a pussy he is.

Personally I rank Larry 5th on my "fingers on the blackboard" (no pun intended) radio at the Score.

from worst to best

1. Jesse (run away, run away!)
2. (s)Murf (a death spiral of a show stuck somewhere between 1940-50)
3. North (like getting a lap dance while sitting on a tack... it could be great but usually it just hurts)
4. Zaidman (Volume is not a replacement for intelligence)
5. Holmes (Occasionally really solid but spends too much time as his alter ego "Captain Obvious" when picking topics especially when working solo)
6. Abbatacola/Goff (New & enthusiastic helps but it's too often like listening to old HS buddies sit around, get drunk, & tell stories about things that happened when you weren't there)
7. Mully/Hanley (best "pure" sports show on the station)
8. Baum/Olken (it was better with Rosey but still my Saturday guilty pleasure) :-)
9. B&B (the only show I make time for because they entertain me)

Canellis, Hough, etc I really don't have an opinion on yet because I just don't listen that much anymore

and as a sidenote I still think the 2nd best show on WSCR was Joe Bartosh's Sunday night extravaganza. I still miss it

Holmes, Drinky, and Goff all sound like frat party boy's arguing at the Keg. They really need to get over that. It's cool college radio but doesn't work here. They kind of remind me of the movie "Old School" holding on to there college youth.

True True. Which is why if I catch a few minutes of Last Call on a Sat. or Sun. night, I don't mind. If they want a regular show, they have to drop the college-like thing.

As for LWH, he's not terrible in my book. I think he'd make a good co-host with someone else (and as long as that someone else is driving the show).
LWH has tried to act like a badass before, and he has gotten defensive vs. callers in the past when they've disagreed with him. He's also gotten snippy with Lou Cannelis a few times. Having said that, I'd like to say he'd be better than Fred on the North show, but I'd only suspect LW to curl up and turn into a yes man in front of North.

I don't hate Holmes. I think he is a work in progress (just at the beginning of that progress though). I think he has gotten better since he was hired for the regular night time gig. I like The Pulse.

The problem I see is that he often takes the obvious side of an argument then sets it up that he is the only one who holds the opinion. The example is his discussion about the Illini last night. The world knew that a Final Four team that lost 5 of its top 7 players was not going to return to the Final Four. Yet Lawrence acts like this is a novel idea. When no one calls him to debate the topic he believes it is because he has been proven correct and his detractors have gone into hiding. The reality is that he is discussing a point that 95% of the audience agrees with and already knew.

Ok, it means absolutely nothing, but here are my rankings (& brief reasons for such), again from worst to best:

1. Zaidman (I hate his smarmy little nasal "know-it-all" tone);

2. Jesse (this guy is dumb as hell and I'm sick of it - PLUS, he's a Cubs fan);

3. Murph (He is just too old-fashioned, he is not well-prepared, and everything he does seems to revolve around teh Cubs or some Cubs angle);

4. Holmes (I like his youthful viewpoints and topics, but he was best when working next to Zampillo or Hood. He is no better than a cut-rate sidekick, and his voice is whiny and annoying. He seems to worship B&B and want to be just like 'em - lame) Talent should come through on air, not ambition;

5. Mully/Hanley (Great sports coverage and analysis, but not much more than I get from their print articles. They are boring and fail to add any humor element. For being in the locker rooms all of the time they don't seem to get the big-time guests, either - it is not an excuse to have the other shows steal them);

6. North (Not as good as with "Wiseguy" Doug or Jiggs, but still provides some unique comic relief. Great for bar-type pre-brawl sports conversations and I like the contrarian edge, but show in current format could be much better);

7. B&B (I used to hate them because of THEIR smarminess, but I have grown to love their drop-ins. I still want to choke them when they berate their own callers or talk down to people, and big, tough Bernstein ALWAYS backs down from any interviewee who has bigger credentials than he. It is sad, though that they have such a geek following that defends all of their actions, reminds me of the "Math Club" in high school, just that i can't beat them up now);

8. Baum/Olken (I agree that it was better with Rosenbloom, but for some reason these guys are truly solid with sports views, entertaining, and an easy listen - might be the time slot, though, as I always feel a bit better on the weekends);

9. Abbatacola/Goff (I like the modern angle these guys come forth with when given the chance. I believe that B&B would like to hold them back for as long as they can. It is time for the apprentices to become teh masters!)

Ok, think what you may, but this is my ranking.

HE HAS A FUNKY FLIP ATTITUDE. HE TALKS DOWN TO CALLERS, HE COMES OFF LIKE HE IS ENTITLED TO SOMETHING AND THERE IS NO WAY HE IS BETTER THAN HOOD OR ZAMPILLO AT NIGHT. THE ONLY THING THAT KEEPS HIS @$$ AFLOAT IS HIS FORMER AGENT TURNED PROGRAM DIRECTOR.
THAT IS WHY THERE IS SO MUCH DISTAIN FOR THE LITTLE MAN.

Very solid Post!

I would put Rogers # 1 for same reasons plus the only reason he is on the air is because of North undeserved influence at the Snore.

I would put OG #2 for his constant attempts to add his political BS to the conversations and overall miserable presentation and delivery

I would put Jesse Rogers as the worst host on either station by a wide margin. He is inarticulate low IQ example of all that is wrong with Chicago sports radio. I can not believe any other major market would have a dope like this on the air.

In comparison to Rogers, Holmes is a solid pro. Which shows how bad Rogers is!.

Here you go, Grid, some luv for Larry...

Jesse is on for 5 hours tonight. Give me Lawrence back! I'm not his biggest fan, but he's better than NIU basketball, Blackhawk hockey, and for the love of whoever Mel Gibson is praying to these days, no more Jesse Rogers!

He'll probably be on for about 8 hours this weekend, too, as fucking usual. Come on, Mitch, that's just terrible. There's no excuse to put this pinhead on so often, if at all.

Oops, my bad. I underestimated Mitch. He actually gave Jesse 12 hours this weekend, not 8. Jesus Christ, that's awful.
