The defenition of a mouth breather is Mike North. The perfect picture is one where Pappy smiles with his mouth wide open and looks like a constipated bloated douch bag. |

The term has definitely been overused at this place. It's time to start using some equally interesting synonyms. I vote for garlic eaters. I have always thought "rustics" was a gentlemanly way to describe an unsophisticated individual. |

I think people just love saying the words "Mouth-Breather", and actually it IS kinda fun to say and type. It makes me laugh just thinking about it, I mean, what is the alternative, a NOSE-BREATHER? "Blowhard" is a better and easier term altogether to decipher, I think. |

Yes, but they are not interchangable. One can be a mouth breather and not a blowhard, and vice versa. They typically go together, but not always. Sometimes, mouth breather is synonymous with creepy, which has nothing to do with being a blowhard. |

mouth breather may me more interchangeable with slack-jawed idiot than anything else This from Doubletongue Dictionary definition for “mouth-breather” mouth-breather n. a stupid person; a moron, dolt, genius. Categories: English Pejorative Slang Editorial Note: The original definition of mouth-breather referred to a person that, due to medical problems (usually with the sinuses or nose), was forced to breath via the mouth. This leaves the jaw hanging open at most times, which has a tendency to make a person look dopey or spacey. Citations: [1944 Lloyd Lewis @ Chicago N.Y. Times (Oct. “Of a Capitulation in Chicago”: Billy, who has grown rich on the rivers, nevertheless approached in the manner of a mouth-breather, hat in hand, toes crossed.] 1978 Cyra McFadden N.Y. (June 17) “The sacking of a genuine star”: One wonders, in fact, if some nervous vice-presidents at the CBC are not looking over their shoulders at some of the mouth-breathers and wall-climbers in the new Conservative caucus who always viewed the CBC as a hive of pinkos and weirdos. [1986 Sandra Earley Newsday (N.Y.) Yes, that makes a lot of sense. A person with chronically swollen sinuses certainly must be of little intelligence. A rather typical deduction of Boers and Bernstein (as well as their followers), who routinely demonstrate their own lack of intelligence by speaking their minds on a daily basis, something which a wise person recognizes to be a far better indicator of such things. |

I always thought the term had originally been misused to provide a literal description for the horny callers of Swieca's Sunday morning baseball and, later on, the late night shows. |

Yes, that would be correct. To me they meant mouth breathing literally. As in not breathing through your nose when speaking to make it sound as though you are out of breath and some overweight dope jerking it to the sound of Julies voice. |

Now this is an interesting development. If true, I might have to retract my post (which would suck, because I was given props by prop-giver!) If B&B use the term in reference to some of the people we've heard call in who sound like they are blowing into the mouthpiece of their phone while they are waiting for words to pop into their head, that's a different story. However, I think the term is generally used in the way people were describing earlier in the thread, so I think the jury's still out. We might need clarification from B&B themselves (now realizing the uselessness of posting this request in a Murph thread). |

I may be wrong, but I am sure I have heard one or both of them use "gap-toothed mouth breather" before. This does not allow for any discussion as to the meaning for B & B. I also seem to recall "slack-jawed mouth breather" used also. The jury has come to a verdict. |
