As one of the posters here who admits to watching MITM every morning (search past posts for this admission if desired), I've tried not to jump on any thread that bashes the show, because if you consume enough of a product, eventually you'll have some bad experiences. By that same token this isn't blanket praise of the show. I'm also on record saying that I like to tune into the show because I'm a chicago sports fan who no longer lives in the Chicago area so I get some Chicago sports information from MITM.
I did have to post about the ridiculousness that is Mike North talking college football. A few of the highlights from a 10 minute segment today that they had on college football. First they had an interview with Kirk Ferentz, then had some BCS/College Football expert on.
- Mike loves Boise State, and trumpets them non stop. Look Mike, everyone knows Boise has a good program, it isn't as if you discovered them. He continually says they should be playing for the national title...AND WON"T SHUT UP ABOUT IT. What an idiot. Do non-BCS conferences get screwed in the current system? Sure, but if a team from the bigger conferences goes undefeated they are more deserving of the title game than a WAC team that stomps the New Mexicos of the world week in and week out.
- After sucking on Boise State's balls for 5 minutes, he asks this expert who he thinks would win between Boise State and TCU. The analyist says TCU (which is what most people who follow the sport would probably say) and North is beside himself. Then in questioning the guy he says the following: "Tell me who TCU played this year, I haven't seen them and don't know anything about them" (paraphrase). Are you serious? They are the number 4 team in the BCS right now, and North just went off for 10 minutes as if he knew what was going on in College Football, but doesn't know ANYTHING about the #4 team in the nation. Granted TCU isn't Florida, but they aren't Central Arkansas either. Just pathetic, talk about loosing what little credibility was left on the subject considering:
- He also had Kansas in his top 5 for about 6 weeks this year, the same Kansas team that is on a 4 game loosing streak in the pathetic Big XII North.
- Mike hates USC, can't stand that USC is still ranked in the top 15 because they have 2 losses. Mike, you don't understand math then, when you start the season ranked #2, and lose two games that are spread out, you're still going to be in the top 15, it's how voters have done it forever. Is it right, maybe no, but USC isn't the only team to benefit from it. Ohio State lost twice and is in the same position as USC (relatively) but you don't hear Nort complaining about that.
- Asked Kirk Ferentz about Kirk Herbstreith's supposedly saying that "USC still belongs in the final 4" last saturday on ESPN????? I have no idea what North was saying, I don't think Ferentz did either, and I'm pretty sure Mike had no clue what he was quoting Herbstreith about and likely butchered the quote. Which lead to this exchange:
Ferentz: I haven't heard that story.
North: I just told you about it.
Ferentz: (Completely ignoring whatever North was trying to say) I think Kirk does a good job, he's always prepared and thoughtful about what he said..... (basically avoiding Mike North's idiocy)
- As a final ridiculous statement, this expert (who also has a RPI college basketball site) was about to go off the air, and Mike said "I'm not done with this guy, we need to bring him back during college basketball season" Uh Mike, when college basketball season rolls around, you'll be broadcasting on Arby's.com from your basement, I'm guessing this guy won't want to appear on that show.
It was just an abortion of a segment, much like all the college football segments are on MITM. It a shame because Jiggs actually has some good thoughts about college football, is realistic about the state of the game, and understands why things are. If North would shut up Jiggs would probably have a nice discussion with the guest. Or at least say things that don't make me want to leave the home sooner to get to my crappy job rather than listen to North.
