The only thing funnier then Jerry's one-liners are his teams!

As much as I dont like what Jerry and Poinsetta has done to the program, the alternative scares me much more... Isiah...

Unfortunately, Chibill, 670 The SCORE is once again the radio home of DePaul basketball. Zach Zaidman & Laurence Holmes provide the descriptions for another long, long season of a Blue Demons' team that's supposed to be a bottom feeder in a conference they have no business in. That's the Big East. Steve Olken sits in for Zach Tuesday when DePaul hosts that basketball factory in Columbia University at Allstate Arena.

DePaul basketball is such a damn shame right now. They owned this town in the 80s and the list of very good NBA players from that program was impressive.

What has to be done to bring the program back?
> Need to play your home games in a location that is easily accessable for the student base. Bringing prosective recruits to the Horizon/Allstate is like bringing them to a funeral. Can't even get there directly on the train.
> Program needs to be gutted from the top down. Jean Lenti Ponsetto is a very nice person, but she has no business running a Big East program. Wainwright is over his head and wasn't even a dominating coach at the Colonial/Atlantic 10 level.
> Get a hot-shot young assistant in here from a big time program, similar to when they brought in Leitao from UConn. Except this time, create an environment where he doesn't want to leave. If Chris Collins isn't going to take over the Duke job, drag him back home.
> I don't think leaving the Big East is the solution - yes, you're taking your lumps, but if you want to contend again you have to do it with the Big Boys. For years and years, people said Northwestern should leave the Big 10 - you never hear that anymore (at least in football).

DePaul should spend the $$$$ and build an on-campus arena on the Lincoln Park campus where students can actually cheer their team. I'm old enough to remember DePaul used to play some of their home games at what used to be called Alumni Hall, now called McGrath Arena. Yeah, it was small, but DePaul had quite a home court advantage they simply don't have in Rosemont. For games vs. the marquee schools such as Georgetown, UConn, Syracuse and Notre Dame, forget about Allstate Arena! Many Big East schools play home games at NBA arenas, and DePaul should cut a deal with the United Center to play a small number of their home games. CTA buses constantly stop at the U.C. and wouldn't be the bitch that it can be getting out to Rosemont!

Recruiting has been a big problem since Joey Meyer was calling the shots, and I remember many of the city's top high school coaches in the Public League felt that Joey alienated their programs by passing up some of the top prospects playing high school hoops right here in Chicago. DePaul needs to recruit much better and it would help if they had an assistant or someone in their athletic department who could do that.

Last but not least, DePaul should be in a conference that's better suited for them, and that's the Horizon League. Yeah, it's a cut below the Big East, but there are schools like Loyola & UIC that would love to play them...

I don't think you'd want to be stuck in traffic on the expressway adjacent to the Allstate Arena on DePaul gamenight, Douchebag...

SHARK responding to Douchebag by name is always funny. It never ever ever fails.

I agree with SHARK that DePaul should probably be in the Horizon League if they're not going to commit to a competitive athletic department (which is fine by me; I don't follow college sports), but evidently it's worth it to be a Big East school, even if they're complacent with trotting out awful basketball.

Hey neat, a Steve Olken sighting (or hearing as the case may be). Dr. Gootum Gopta.

Their games were National on WGN-TV....they had no idea how to sustain success....Joey Meyer was as thin skinned as they come......AND...

No one wants the hassle of airport traffic/rush hours on the damned Kennedy to get to a dump like the Horizon.

I had season tickets many many years ago...when they first moved to Rosemont....Years later they sent a survey to season ticket holders....Would we prefer the Chicago Stadium to the Rosedump....I voted anywhere in the City....

According to their response to the survey......their ticket base WAS in the NW suburbs...

All of their alumni is NOT in the NW suburbs...they just weren't going to pay Wirtz when the Rosedump was much more affordable....

I went to a game a few years ago when DePaul played Marquette in the UC....it was the year Richardson was there with Simmons and the third guy....game did not draw big numbers and it was like a home game for Marquette.

As much as Mike North is despised around here, I will never forget him screaming what a stupid move it was for De Paul to join the Big East....I disagreed totally, but he was right.

Unless DePaul runs their athletic department like a business instead of an extension of high school athletics, they are toast.

So Shark, where do you propose they get a big enough tract of land in Lincoln Park to build a 10K seat stadium?

Actually, there was an area of land around Cabrini near the brown line that they were looking at back 10-12 years ago when Kennedy was coaching. I can only assume money caused it to fall apart because that land now has rows of townhouses.
