I thought this guy invented ESPN!

Berman moving to DirecTV or NFL Network?
By Mark J. Miller

Chris Berman has been the face of ESPN for a long, long time but his contract is expiring in a few months and Sports by Brooks is reporting that DirecTV is supposedly trying to get him to move on over.

DirecTV "is in full pursuit of the longtime broadcaster," according to Brooks. DirecTV apparently wants Berman for the Red Zone Channel as well as on a channel that is in progress for Dan Patrick.

Meanwhile, the NFL Network is supposedly after Berman as well, according to The Big Lead. One thing going for the Network is that its president is Steve Bornstein, who Berman is supposedly close pals with after they worked together at ESPN.

You really can not have too many threads regarding the hatred for and suckiness of one Chris Berman. I actually got his autograph (for some reason?) at Wrigley 10 or so years ago and he was behemoth of a creature. He was as tall as he was fat.

Chris Berman has been with ESPN from Day 1. If they had a "Mount Rushmore" of ESPN personalities, "Boomer", like it or not, has to be up there.

If Berman goes to NFL Network you gotta figure Rich Eisan is out, right? No way both could exist there. For the money they'd pay Berman he'd have to be the pre and post guy on Sundays you would think.

I don't think Berman would want to do that "Redzone" thing. It's a step down actually. He's just sending you from game to game. He can't really do his Chris Berman thing in that role. It's really not a lot of camera time when you break it down. I don't think he'd want that.

Plus why does Redzone have to pay big money for the "Redzone" guy. We're watching it for the games. Not the host. Anybody could do it and we'd watch.

Pretty much. But by your own argument, they're looking at him for something else.

Maybe Berman wants to do "play by play" for the 10-12 NFL network games. Maybe he replaces Papa. He's done baseball play by play. He's bad at that and he'd be worse doing NFL but the NFL network might not realize that.

I've said this for a couple of years. Once ESPN's monday night deal is up the NFL Network is gonna take it. So they'll have Mondays and Thursdays. No reason for the NFL to give Mondays to another cable network when they can do it. They can make more money just doing it rather than selling the rights. Plus it will force all cable companies to carry NFL network if they have Monday and Thursday football. Customers will really start to bitch and the NFL Network will have leverage with cable outlets at their price.

The NFL network is no ESPN though. Irritating one of the biggest cheerleaders of your product may not be great business. It's not like ESPN doesn't already pay a ton of money for MNF.

Until this is official, CSF should change the headline. It's misleading.

Thank goodness for NFL Network.

I hardly watch football. I'm a baseball fan.

Berman can go to NFL Network for all I care - just as long as he stays the hell away from MLB Network.
