or, I thought ATL was The Wolves Parent/Upper/NHL affiliate and was this a Minnie Minnoso type move to keep an NHL streak intact?

ATL is the Wolves parent, yes. as far as a streak or anything...i'm not sure. could be a playoff roster pre-trade deadline move. i have no idea.

- When Chelios signed with the Wolves, he wasn't added to Atlanta's extended roster. It's sort of like when a player on the Iowa Cubs, like a Tom Goodwin or whoever, isn't necessarily on the 40-man roster.
- Now, for Chelios to be eligible for postseason play, for which the Thrashers could still conceivably qualify, a player needs to be on the NHL team's extended roster before the trade deadline passes, at which point rosters expand from 23 (dress 20, scratch up to 3) to theoretically anything under 75 (dress 20, scratch the extras). Chelios certainly has the playoff bona fides to justify having him around as a 7th defenseman or whatever.
- So now instead of being simply a player on the Wolves, Chelios is a player on the Thrashers who has been assigned to the Wolves. Will they call him up for the playoffs or home-stretch March/April games? I can't say. Can they? Sure.

So to answer your question it's somewhere between "keep a streak intact" and "add an extra body on August 31st because you can." Hope this helps!
