Ugly numbers for 'Monsters & Money'

It's early in the day. But there is an audience for the early news and talk shows that fill the 5-7 a.m. time slot on all of Chicago's major television outlets.

On Feb. 1, however, one local outlet, WBBM-Channel 2, introduced a dramatically different product into the early morning mix -- "Monsters & Money in the Morning," a show with four co-hosts -- Mike North, Dan Jiggetts, Mike Hegedus and Sun-Times columnist Terry Savage.

With "Monsters," WBBM executives hope to find out if the Chicago market will embrace a new early morning show where the focus is squarely on sports (North and Jiggetts) and business (Hegedus and Savage), rather than the typical mix of news reports, soft features, weather and traffic.

A little more than two months into the bold experiment, local early morning viewers in Chicago are not yet biting in the kind of numbers WBBM executives no doubt might have hoped. In the March Nielsen ratings book, "Monsters'' scored a minuscule 0.3 rating in the 5-6 a.m. time period, less than half the 0.7 rating the station got a year ago when it was airing a more traditional program. The "Monsters" rating stayed at 0.3 from 6-7 a.m., down even more from 0.9.

Overall in the March ratings book, WBBM's "Monsters" ranked last among all early morning shows.

Despite the slow start for "Monsters," WBBM news director Jeff Kiernan is optimistic it will find an audience.

"We are producing the show we intended to produce, and I have tremendous confidence in the talent on the show," Kiernan said.

In recent days, WBBM also has begun to promote "Monsters" more aggressively via TV spots that often reference guests scheduled to appear on the show. "The show has evolved, and now we feel we can invite audiences to sample it," Kiernan said.

Among various tweaks that have been made to "Monsters" during its first nine weeks, Kiernan said the show now aims to shift the discussion more toward sports or business each morning depending on what is newsiest.

Needless to say, executives at competing outlets are watching WBBM's "Monsters" experiment with interest. "They've carving out a niche," said Todd Woolman, the new executive producer of WFLD's "Good Day, Chicago." Unlike "Monsters & Money," "Good Day, Chicago" isn't aiming to reinvent the wheel, but Woolman expects to make adjustments.

"WGN Morning News" executive producer Sandy Pudar said she is sticking with the basics that have served the WGN show well.

WLS general manager Emily Barr said she is fully committed to the more traditional early morning format because she is convinced it's what Chicago viewers want at that hour.

Jeff Kleman might want to get his resume ready. 0.3 is a serious problem and there is no one on this show is going to make it better. Pappys new nickname should be "ratings killer"

I can't say I'm surprised nobody's watching "Monsters and Money in the Morning", despite constant promos during CBS Sports' coverage of the NCAA Basketball Tournament. I have to think in this "information superhighway" today's TV now has to offer, I bet the ratings are a lot worse if you add national news/talk shows such as FOX News Channel's "FOX & Friends", CNN's "American Morning" & of course, the one & only Robin Meade and HLN's "Morning Express" into the equation.

the numbers prove that north is irrelavant. he will claim that the show was not promoted, blah, blah same excuses he has given the past 5 years. the suntimes embarrassment needs to go too. nort needs to take his money and go home. or move to vegas and annoy the citizens there.

This show makes webio look good. My God, CBS is brain dead. 0.3 rating and people are watching closely?

TV execs have to be dumber than radio execs, and that is saying an awful lot.

I find humor and joy in north's continuing failure.

You're saying the ratings are based on local shows only?? I've never heard that.

I was looking at a bigger picture, NSJ. "Monsters" is the lowest rated morning show on Chicago TV alone.

Just a prediction, but based on Pappys reduced role in the show and the fact the commercials they are running for the show now strictly focus on Terry Savage and Jiggs, I am going to say Pappy is gone from the show in June sometime.

i give north props for finding people to finance his stuff. but, he can't get out of his own way. i've seen about 30 minutes to an hour of this show and i can't stomach more.

this is worse then the last show. a reduced role for him would be good. maybe there is an new job awaiting for him at the new edgy wgn.

I still like the idea of him getting back in the restaurant biz. He can still excel as a gladhander and bullshitter, yet you'd have to actually seek him out to hear him, which is best for the general population.

Then he can take over the gig of that guy they have on Chicago Tribune Live who's a bartender for Harry Caray's (or something). 5 minutes with 'wise guy' Mike North at his restaurant, what are 'real chicagoans' saying or some bullshit, and North is treated like the mascot he is and not an actual credible commentator.

Heard a Monsters commercial on The Score today right before B&B. Kind of made me chuckle at the placement of the spot.

I heard the same promo voiced by longtime SCORE Production Director Russ Mitera on "The Danny Mac Show". I wonder if the same promo is popping up on WBBM Newsradio 780, 93XRT and other CBS owned outlets...

Was the Dean Martin dropped played right after it?

They used to do that following the Marconi spots.

I see him going into a partnership with Joe Gentile where the station is 24 hours Gentile or North.

Is that Joe Gentile station still on the air? I used to listen to the Joe Gentile morning show sometimes. That was an experience.

He only played songs by Sinatra and then would interview Sinatra impersonators and other strange suburban business owners. They had some White Guy Radio or something like that on that station too and he would interview that guy all the time also. It was all very bizarre.

It might be, Doc, but it's hard to pick up clearly. I thought it was 1330 AM WJJG on the dial...I remember when Chet Coppock always mentioned "The Baron of Barrington" on "Coppock on Sports" back in the day, and I remember Joe Gentile advertised his Chrysler-Plymouth dealership on Doug Buffone's old "Sports Magazine" on the defunct SportsChannel & FOX Sports Net Chicago. Moment of silence for all that please...Thank you. I know Gentile's name is still on the marquee of Loyola-Chicago's on-campus basketball arena.

"Cop Talk" was on Saturday mornings. That show set race relations back a generation.

Never heard of Cop Talk, but in Milwaukee we had a similar Sunday morning show called "Call In On Crime," wherein some guy (not our SomeGuy) and a cop would debate what's wrong with those darn kids. I think it just ended up being two meatballs screeching "where're da parents? where're da parents?" for an hour. Weekend morning radio truly is a gift to this world.

North is clearly playing out of position on this show. I don't think even North can believe that this odd shitfest is on a major network in a major market.
I've said it before & I'll say it again...if AM1000 reunited North & Jiggetts & put them on the air from 1 - 6, they would kill B&B's ratings.

If you put Jiggetts and North on ESPN1000, they would pull numbers equal to those of Harry and Spike. They are just like Boers, old and bad.
