As a frequent listener, to radio stations, via the Internet stream - I get frustrated when I get some generic Sporting News Radio show (have you guys ever heard that Two Live Stews cluster F?)

I know The Score picks up SNR for their streaming listeners during games - I assume 1000 and the other stations do something similar when they are not allowed to stream play-by-play of various games.

What I was wondering was this - is there a reason they couldn't provide some local flavor during these times? I thought I recalled them, at some point, replaying "best of" interviews or something -- but what I am wondering is if they couldn't give the mic to some aspiring on-air producer or contest winner? While they would be airing their White Sox - Blackhawks - Cubs - Bears game over the air, they could have a real-time local show via the stream. It would provide a solid opportunity for those who are wanting to get some air time, and also provide an alternative )to whatever game is on) for fans wanting to hear/talk about current sports goings-on.

Perhaps the streaming #'s wouldn't justify it, but I assume that they must always have some guys wandering around the studios (in case of a rain delay or cancellation), right? Why not have them host a web-only show/update until they get back to their regular programming?

For me, the national feed that they go to is an instant button push. So if they're interested in having 'something' their for people to stream, why not provide some opportunities to some eager hosts?

(I'm sure there might be some issue with the White Sox (or whomever) feeling like "their" station is undercutting them by offering an alternative to the game ... but the bottom line is that they are ALREADY providing an alternative stream online, why not make it something that fans would want to listen to?)

I think you answered your own question.

I assume the station PAYS to air SNR, right? Are you telling me that it's a cheaper option to pay for their trashy audio than to fire up the mics for a couple of producers/update guys to yap it up during the game?

I have zero idea how many people actually listen online, but I thought I recalled Bernstein bragging about the streaming AND website numbers at one point ... I know the majority of my radio time is spent listening via stream (whether it's on the computer or via iPhone out and about). The choices are great that way, but I am fairly bummed when I pop it over to catch the vibe of the fans on a certain event and get that awful SNR garbage because the Sox game is running long (or some national football game has blacked out the station etc).

I don't know, seems a bit simple to me on the surface - if you see the need to provide "something" during the blackout times, why not provide something local RATHER than some generic, and bad, national show from that crappy network?

Mike North might be looking to buy air time.

There you go, have him PAY to get on the air during games...ONLINE ONLY. ;)

Seriously, though, I think that would be a smart way to develop a talent in sort of an "underground" way. Have the same guy do the ONLINE ONLY show, and see if he can build an audience - would certainly be nice to have a more polished fill-in/weekend/evening host on the staff, right? Or just get Hub's kid and the guy that won the contest to host weekend shows.

It doesn't seem to me that Mitch is interested in developing talent...

Problem with developing talent is finding a home for them. Hear a lot of Drinky/Goff?

The obvious solution would seem to be replaying M&H/Mac/B&B instead of paying for Sporting News and making sure to label it as "Best of" so you don't get idiots calling the station during Sox games to respond to something said days ago. No, idiots are supposed to call the station after Sox games.

I think Ranger has explained before that the Score pays a lump sum to use Sporting News, so I guess it doesn't cost them anything more to turn it on for the stream. They don't really run any Sporting News over the air anymore, though.

Jose Macias, Neifi Perez and Dave Veres say yes.

score gets money to have whitesox on air. whitesox cant be on their streaming lines, so they put even better content online so nobody tunes into their moneymaking ota line? i swear the gull of some of you people.... so think of it. worse then whitesox baseball. the snorting snooze network is the perfect fit.

Don't know why I thought you were one of the founding members of the Two Live Stews Fan Club, Ike? When I'm wrong, I'm wrong. I guess.

You could argue opening up a mic for a struggling producer to belch out sports thoughts is "worse" than even SNR ... and it'd be nearly free. Hell, you could probably sell that online air time to someone to "give them a chance". In any case, it wouldn't be whatever the flat fee is that they pay for SNR.

I think it makes a lot of sense - seems like a nice little niche where you could get someone some McNeil Flight Hours. I guess the only bad thing would be is if that guy built a cult following that started making people WANT to go on the stream, rather than listen to some sterling White Sox play by play.

The station pays rights fees for the Sox. DePaul and NIU buy their time.

24 hours of local Chicago sports talk is overkill. I like to hear national stories too, especially when the Sox games are on. Putting SNR on is just fine by me.

You mean you wouldn't want Milt Pappas, some dipshit caller who pissed off B&B, and a hotdog stand owner to fill the time?

Wow. That actually posted five times? I apologize. The iPad and this board do not work really well together.

Posting on a Chicago sports radio message board really defeats the hipness of your Magic Screen.
