Has anyone been listening to the Score Search contest? I had it on the first hour and I have to say if this was the best of the bunch it doesn't say much for the selection committee let alone those who tried out. This Agulierra guy is way too full of himself and the Score has enough of those types already. Plus, anyone who is nicknamed "the Main Event" has too many friends into "Jersey Shore". |

Score Search Finalist #1 Maya Gavin: Nickname: Maya Akai Age: 38 Hometown: Joliet, IL What is your favorite sports memory of all time? 1985 Bears Superbowl and the 2005 White Sox World Series win. Which 670 The Score on-air personality do you admire most? Why? Laurence Holmes. Laurence does a great job of keeping the his show fresh, keeping the listeners engaged and he presents a balanced and critical analysis of Chicago sports. Why would listeners want to tune into your show? I think listeners would want to tune in because I am knowledgeable about sports, not afraid to jump right into the tough controversial topics. I am a fan just like them and my passion for my teams will be apparent. Also I have a knack for getting people involved in good conversation!! |

I love how Danny kept saying "you have to connect with the audience...if you want to make it in this business you have to connect with the listeners". Then he and Mitch promptly dismissed the two of the four who received the most on-line votes from the audience/listeners and ultimately picked the one who (presumably) received the least amount of support from the audience/listeners. |

I flipped on the station last night, at some point (maybe around 10 or so?), and heard Goff thanking everyone associated with this contest. I guess I did hear Bernstein then, too, as I thought I did but Goff didn't thank him at the very end. I have no idea how any of this went, other than thinking it's just an insanely stupid idea. The same station that accepts advertising money from ICB also decides to give away a job via a contest held at a bar. Brilliant! The Score really has only had one female host, right? Swieca has been gone for awhile now, so I'm guessing the mgt figured the suits in NY would like to hear that they hired a lady. I've only heard talk of her helium-sounding voice (somehow I have missed her actually speaking), but I have to say the reaction here doesn't have me excited to here her show constantly being pimped out on the station (like they did with B&B Roast, McNeil's 1 year anniversary etc). Adam Carolla has a saying about radio guys - in that they are just beavers. If you put a beaver on the roof of the Sears Tower, they would scurry around and try to build a dam. Because that's what beavers do, build dams. Seems like the mgt at the station are really just a bunch of beavers, doing their beaver radio things......wing bowls and giving away a weekend hosting gig via a bar contest. Awesome stuff. I assume she'll get a $75 stipend for her weekly gig? Oy. |

In their defense, the online, audience stuff is to make the audience "think" they have a voice. It really doesn't mean anything at all. Case in point was last year when Michael Oshita won the online voting over myself and the other contestants. The online voting was designed to bring traffic to the station's website. The actual voting meant nothing. They know friends and family are going to vote for who they know so it really isn't a good measure of what the "audience" thinks. Michael, by the way, was one of the two let go after the initial cut. Which brings me to another point. Mitch Rosen questioned one of the contestants during the broadcast because he was from out of town and wondered how he could relate to a Chicago audience. Mitch didn't think he could relate to the audience and told him so to his face. This made me scratch my head for two reasons. First, if he didn't think an out-of-towner could fit the bill for the position, then what was he doing as one of the final contestants? Secondly, Connor McKnight, winner of last year's reporter search contest, was questioned about his Chicago knowledge since he was not from Chicago. Members of the panel (that night it was Bernsey, Rosen, Drew Hayes and Ron Gleason) voiced concerns that he might not have enough Chicago backround for the job. In the end, it didn't seem to matter as he won the job. I wouldn't be shocked if the suits from corporate had a hand in telling Mitch who the winner would be. I remember last year on the Wednesday before the contest, a post on the chicagoland radio and media website said that he had it on good authority that the suits had picked the winner and it would be Connor. The contest is a great way to get those of us who want, or wanted, to work in the field a chance at stardom. That is the hook. From there, I think things are determined by powers far greater than those on the panel. |

ADMISSION: I always got a kick out of girls that could talk sports. She looks like a young Robin Quivers, and, if she plays her cards right she could forge quite a presence in this market. I'll assume that you were drunk when you posted this. I thought This Score host contest was a bad idea, & after hearing the winner I think I was right. |

Bernstein's account of why he voted for Maya as the winner was unintentionally laughable. He claimed she "is smart, sounds good...[and therefore] has a great set of raw materials to develop." The problem is that the only way he could justify his claim that Maya "sounds good" is if he were conducting an audition for the next Chipmunks movie. Additionally, while Maya is capable of speaking coherently, all of the sports opinions I heard her express were parroted from ESPN and other media outlets. Bernstein's assertion that Maya is intelligent thus seems to be based on her ability to reproduce conventional sports wisdom rather than her talent for forming thoughts independently. |

I've said before, it's hard for women to discuss sports because we are not taught them the same as you. |

But with this girl, I think its gonna be even more difficult. It sounded like she got a degree in journalism or broadcasting and just saw this contest and said "Hey, Sports is hiring! I could do that" I dont think she's a die hard or even die easy fan. I am sure she doesnt pop champagne for the Bears opener. |
