I've been able to sample some J Hood over the last few days. I still contend he is the most underutilized talent in Chicago sports talk. His analysis is deep and broad. He is entertaining and challenging without being condescending. The Score could really use this guy in the Lawrence time slot. He would be a great lead in to Sox games. I got to hear some drinky as well. I'm not sure he is great radio, but I just really like the guy. Give me more Hood and drinky! |

Did you catch his interview with the ESPNChicago guy? Weird silence. But usually Hood is good. Its a shame he's been on the wrong end of Both Mac revolutions. |

Hood and Dickerson have been my favorite radio combo over the past few years. Maybe if I heard them everyday I wouldn't think so, but they're great. |

J Hood might just be the best sports radio host in Chicago. I love the guy. I like Drinky alot too. I really hope the 3rd sports radio station gets off the ground because it will give guys like Hood, Drinky, Murph & others another opportunity to get more air time. |

Wonder if Hood applied for the job Goff got, his Georgia Bulldog love would have served him well. |

I've always been a Jonathan Hood fan. It fucking makes me sick that an untalented dork like LoHo has such a high profile at the Score while Hood toils at that rumor up the dial. |

The guy was so unprofessional when disgruntled regarding Telander that it's a sign this guy is more trouble that he is worth whatever he may bring on the air. I don't know what's worse: You thinking J Hood was unprofessional handling a guy who quit mid-shift, or Scorehead thinking Murph actually is good on the radio. Telander deserved to be treated like garbage, as the man treated both the listeners and his coworkers like garbage. He couldn't handle dealing with the "common" fan; so he took and had "HIS" rules (no nicknames when someone called in, couldn't be bothered to listen to the topic being discussed, and is a complete jock suck who has clung to living next to Halas Hall as grounds to be considered a "good" sports reporter for 20+ years.) As far as Murph? Sorry, his time has passed. Guys like Boers, North, and Murphy are put out to pasture for a reason. Uncle Terry just hasn't been let go yet. |

I like J Hood (minus the wrestling stuff). He's an easy listen and relates pretty well to the common man. He's always been very nice in person also. Had a really interesting conversation with him at a remote the night when North was on Mac's show for the first time after the 'Cold War'. He had interesting things to say. He may want to do a little more show prep than just read the Sun-Times right before he goes on though. |

A lot of people thought Murph was good on the radio...his mid day show on WSCR was the highest rated show on the station. More people listened to Murph than to anyone else on WSCR. |

The guy had the evening slot, he was promoted and he fucked it up. All these guys trying to get a shot and he got his and blew it. Nobody to blame but himself as he had everything else working for him. |

Simple, he blew it. |

Larry is and so he stayed long after J left. Caught B&B in the car for a couple of hours on Thursday. Yikes. That show needs J Hood in the worst possible way. If he has a contract, work out some paper for when his deal is up to replace Terry. |

I'm certainly not a fan of Telander but that doesn't stop me from appreciating his skill as a writer, something that is sorely lacking from Chicago's sports pages these days. His Baby Boomer penchant for seeing sports as a metaphor for or reflection of society at large aside, there's no doubt the man can write. That he's been allowed to indulge himself by writing about such things as his daughter's Dartmouth swimming team is something that should be laid at the feet of his editors. As far as not dealing with the "common fan" goes, that's a major component of B&b, which is clearly the most beloved show in this forum and perhaps in all of Chicago sports radio. In fact, if you're going to do "Serious Radio" and talk constantly about child rape and CTE, I think it would be good practice not to take a call from "Virgil Livers' Left Nut". |

You are going to have to do better than that Kid. Elmhurst Steve came here and posted blatantly racist stuff and stood behind it when questioned. You may have taken offense to some things SH has said, (I think we all have) but I have no recollection of Al Campanis type stuff like Elmhurst Steve posted. |

For as much as bernstein mocked that idea, isn't that really what he wants from athletes? "Just catch passes." Couldn't robots do that better than humans? If we shouldn't care about anything that athletes do other than on the field as bernstein constantly suggests, aren't we better served with robots? |

Two friends and I went through a phase where we played at least once a week at the arcade on Lawrence west of Harlem. We weren't kids either, probably around 30 years old at the time. |

Dan only wants players to be positive-outcome-producing robots when their humanity tediously dominates a news cycle or when they are Cubs/Blackhawks. If they're seven-foot, bus-riding never-weres who need to be protected from nonexistent allegations of "thuggery," then they're really interesting people. |

Seriously though, I'm not sure he's conscious of it, but I would guess that his viewpoint is informed by the very different natures of the sports. Basketball features men wearing very little in the way of clothing competing in a relatively small space with the audience nearly on top of them. Hockey and football players actually look like robots on their respective fields of play. Of course, television affords us those candid shots of helmetless football players with steaming heads on the sidelines, but I think hockey has declined in popularity in the U.S. since players began wearing helmets. |
