in another thread i just invoked the rising head of dennis green saying "THE BEARS ARE WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE... AND WE LET THEM OFF THE HOOK! IF YOU WANNA CROWN 'EM, THEN CROWN THEY ASS!" that got me thinking, wasn't it the vaunted sir larry of shake that who tried riding the wave of dennisgreenmania by starting up a segment where callers would call up and pick someone whose ass needed to be crowned? i think this might have been during the loho solo time when he was on during the mid-days. i think the concept was the rough equivalent of pappy nort's jagbag segment, i.e. you bascally call up and call someone a jagoff, however this one was dressed up in hilarious dennisgreenmania. whoever did it, i don't remember it lasting long, which is why i think it's definitely loho. another classic segment from the laurence holmes comedy vault came during his hamp-on-holmes (pic related) show. once again, ever the edgy observer of popular culture, laurence wanted to get some play out of the michael phelps caught smoking a bong phenomenon. loaded with giggles and self-promoting "oh my god this segment will never be allowed to come back" we were treated to "who's taking a hit off of michael phelps' bong?" laurence implored callers to call up and pick out athletes/public-eye-people who were acting strangely as if they, wait for it, were taking a hit off of michael phelps' bong. if memory serves, i think laurence first did it when hamp wasn't around to lean on him, and then he did it one time with hamp. i remember hamp being very silent and groaning/bemoaning the segment, all while laurence kept on self-promoting it as a controversial wacky "hey look it's fun time with hip and happening larry! i'm the only guy who will give you zany off the wall antics like this! this will never be allowed to be on the air because it's soooo crazy" -- oh yeah. fun times. at least there was a little cypress hill in the segment intro. from there, what are some of the other ones from shake that or even other hosts? i think i vaguely remember that mike north had a caning segment? hmmmmm... *twilight zone theme * |

I used to listen to the score every night when I got home. I thought it was a bit at the time. I also remember some overnight guys getting fired for going on the air when they were supposed to be playing "Best of the score" |

The Score didn't come in down here. But I listened mostly for Van Lier threatening to come through the phone and strangle someone. |

Yeah Norm was cool. I miss that dude. I'm nominate The Fabulous Sports Babe as a failed gimmick. She looks like Steve Dahl in drag. |

Didn't Joe move back to Seattle area? Wonder if he's tried sportstalk there... Hopefully not overnight; that takes a special kind of radio host to do that. Les, for instance. |

I came here specifically to post "Who's Taking Hits Off Michael Phelps's Bong" and it was right in the first post. Drat. As for Crown Their Ass, not sure when that bit was. Larry's solo show was July/August of '08 when Mully and Hanley stopped doing the six-hour morning show but before Hampton came on for football season. The actual Crown Their Ass incident was October 2006, nearly two full years before the Provisional Larry Show started, so to have done it that far past the expiration date would be utterly implausible. So in other words, that's probably exactly when it was. |
