Derek Jeter thinks he is the Yankees and they'll regret letting him leave. He is asking for twice as much for twice as long as the Yankees will give him, which is already a lot more than he's worth.

Remind you of anyone?

You're comparing the Glorious Yankee captain to Mike North???? That's an inauspicious beginning to your CSFMB career, Omer!

Know one will offer him anywhere near the Yankees supposed offer of 45 for three. I think that is a ridiculous price to pay for an aging player who cant play short anymore.

i like what the yankees are doing here, for once. jeter is long past being worth a $15mil/yr player (hell, one could make an argument that he never really was one, unless you take into consideration the crazy contracts signed in MLB circa 2000-2004, of which he was one). he had an excellent offensive season in 2009, arguably an overall career year... however, once they tore down old yankee stadium and thus the winds changed in new yankee stadium, it stopped being the #1 bandbox in MLB. ask johnny damon what 09 yankee stadium will do for your numbers.

jeter was... ~.267/10/68 last year, with something like ~20+ steals? his defense was never all that, and if they didn't have a monster contract/player over at third odds are a proper slick fielding shortstop would warrant jeter moving over there.

the thing is, jeter is the face of the yankees. he's the face of a billion dollar empire, he's the epitome of the post-1996 "yankee pride" to the point where he had a TV commercial where grass grew behind his every step. he's perhaps the most legendary cocksman athlete of this era. sure, he could sign somewhere else, but he'll still be a yankee.... just playing somewhere else.

the yankees are putting themselves in a position where they're willing to overpay him for three years because he's derek jeter. because he's the guy that has the tape of that recently-deceased yankee PA announcer saying his name at home games... because the jay-z song they play when he goes up to bat is the most pimpin at-bat intro i've seen in baseball. 3yr/$45mil is overpaying the guy for three years... and obviously jeter's going to try for more. i doubt he'll top 15mil/year, but he's thinking maybe he could get ~5/40 or something? who knows.

i love it that the yankees are saying "if you don't want this, go try somewhere else" because they're setting it up so if he leaves it's not on them, it's entirely on him. sure some yankees fans will probably claim you pay whatever you have to pay to keep jeter happy, still, 3/45 is way way way more than what an aging 36/37 year old shortstop is worth... and quite honestly, i wouldn't even give him that. the only reason he's anywhere close to that is a) the yankees are overpaying for one of their guys or b) the redsox want to fuck the yankees or c) some shithead organization wants to prove to their fans that they're out to "win"

minka kelly is fine though. not hottest woman on the planet fine, but still, i can see how she'd settle down a legendary cocksman.

Jeter has totally overplayed his hand. His whole marketing image is based on "intangibles" and being portrayed as a team-first "winner" type player. He must be getting some real bad advice, or is butt-hurt over the ridiculous A-Rod extension to be demanding so much more than what any other team will realistically pay him.
