I was listening to Goff as I was making pancakes for the family Saturday morning and Goff was talking about Ron Santo's death and about "how ron didnt take care of himself" and basically the same crap that Bernsie and Terry have been slinging about Ron and perhaps the fact that Ron continued drinking as a Type A diabetic and Goff also said something along the lines of "talk to the people at the Juvenille Diabites foundation" and Goff talked about covering the whole story and things of that nature.

Frankly, this got me pretty pissed off. I mean, Ron was not a good talent in the booth; but hey, he was what the old ladys that listen to the Cubs game on WGN wanted to hear.

WSCR let the man rest in peace. Goff, in his role on the Boers and Bernstien show belittled this man, made fun of him, criticized him, pilloried him pretty much every time I listened to them discuss the man. Santo is dead. He did not live a perfect life and didnt do what he should have in terms of his health (who the hell does for the most part). LET THE MAN REST IN PEACE.

Try to show a little class, you crushed him from your radio bully pulpit. Class is in pretty short supply in the sports media world. The thing that always surprised me was how god damn personal the rips were on Ron when he was alive. The man made alot of mistakes in his life, but let sleeping dogs lie.

You heard none of the good things I said about him huh?

You also repeated what I said about him not taking care of himself. Doesn't that make you a bad guy?

Jason, I am about as happy to hear you on the radio this morning as I was to hear that Adam Dunn signed with the Sox. Thanks for keeping me sane while I endure this hipster holiday craft fair my girlfriend's doing.

I was surprised with how openly he talked about his situation with rossenblum this past summer, wouldn't have expected that...

Sabu, if you were looking for anything nice about Santo from from those 2 assholes, you were looking in the wrong place. Heard Goff say this morning that Santo is a hall of famer which shocked me, would love to hear him debate that with Lil Danny. The whole he was a poor example to the JDRF thing is fucking ridiculous. Wonder how much money he helped raise for them, you think people who are benefitting from the money he helped raise give 2 shits how he took care of himself or dont want the money because of it? He lived until 70 years old despite "not taking of himself"and had argueably a hall of fame career despite playing with it. Seems he lived a fairly good life and was a decent enough guy. Hang your hat on that and let those fucktards on the radio say what they will.

He did make them a shit ton of money, which is admirable. But he also was a bad example, at the same time. Anyone who doesn't think his alcoholism and other similar aspects played into his health is kidding themselves.

That being said, JDRF is better for having been involved with Ronnie, and Ronnie lived how he wanted to. But it's silly to ignore how he lived.

I'm sure they appreciated the money he raised, and I'm also sure they wish that they would have had a figurehead who took care of himself a little better. They aren't mutually exclusive, and the fact that so many people can't understand that boggles my mind. If you think I was dumping on Santo, then you were just hearing what you wanted to hear. If me saying I'm sorry someone lost there friend and family member is such, so be it. But I will not apologize for anything because nothing I said was incorrect factually. I have nothing against Santo other than I didn't particularly enjoy his broadcasting style, so if you want to make this a thing; go right ahead.

Either way, thanks for listening to the show. Have a good Saturday.

so the goff has proven that you can host a show AND run to the messageboard on commercial breaks to defend against the hate in real-time. who knew?

sir goff, if you can teach spiegel how to do this i believe the board could have its greatest moment since the OG. in the immortal words of captain jean-luc picard: make it so.

actually, you'd still be a nickel short. though i'm sure showing a printout of this msg to a bus driver or one of those highly motivated employees in the glass booths at L stops would earn you five cents of credit.

oh yeah and quality show for the goff rah rah rah... the cleveland rant i heard a little awhile ago was the kind of quality radio most of us would love to hear more often.

Does forgiveness exist in your world Jason?

Does Santo's excessive drinking 40 years ago ever get reconciled and forgiven?

Does the amount of money he raised for JD make some, if not full atonement for his past mistakes?

And why can't someone else choose to forgive him and highlight his good deeds, of which there were thousands, rather than bring up mistakes from a person's past?

Yet people who call in to B n B are admonished regularly about wanting Vicks head on a platter still. Not that theres a double standard or anything

Goff is a joke. He gets his crap info from the very little prick, danny.

His info is bogus. Santo raised 10's of millions of dollars for JDRF. BTW, I do know several of the past chairmen of JDRF, and they all spoke very highly of Ron. Goff, you are garbage.

BTW, Santo died from bladder cancer. Is cancer now a side effect? Fuck you and Bernstein.

His info is bogus. Santo raised 10's of millions of dollars for JDFS. BTW, I do know several of the past chairmen of JDFS, something Goff and Bernstein haven't done. Goff, you are garbage.

I'm not a doctor, but I am going off of information I have heard dozens of times over. Isn't one of the major reasons Santos lost his legs because he wasn't properly taking care of himself?

The point isn't that he is a bad guy, I don't know why you think anyone here is trying to say that. Everyone acknowledges he made a ton of money for JDRF and other charities alike. But that doesn't mean he didn't have his demons. Some of you are acting like Goff spent hours bashing Santo. He made a passing comment during a PRAISE of Ron, and everyone attacked it. A comment BTW, that is 100% factual. You are all choosing to stick to that one sentence, and ignore the fact that Goff spent a good portion of his show praising Santo, and even stating he believes he should be in the HoF... which is something Bernstein doesn't believe. So get off the Goff is a mini-Bernstein BS. It's stupid.

Nobody really knows how Santo took care of himself.
The word "alcoholism" is getting thrown around very unfairly.
What is the difference whether or not he was a big partyer in his youth?
I find the way people dredge up secrets from someone's past to
darken their accomplishments to be quite deplorable.
Comparing Santo with Vick is totally ridiculous.
He was a very good player and a big asset to Juvenile
Diabetes Research.
Leave the man's memory intact and quit trying to destroy it.

I wasnt the caller, I decided to post after hearing that caller.

Goff, I just wish you would STFU about Santo. You treated him like shit on the radio and B & B treated him like shit on their show. Praise him all you want now that he is gone (hall of fame, his stats, whatever). What you said and joked and laughed about him on the radio in the past, speaks volumes about whatever hollow praise you are spewing about him now that he is dead. Maybe you feel guilty about it, I don't know, but it seemed to me like you guys acted like kids who make fun of special needs kids on the playground. What you said and laughed about is just plain wrong. Im not perfect either, but maybe you should have addressed the nasty shit you said about him when he was alive. I guess Santo's passing is sports news and lights up the phone lines and you have a show to run and I understand it, but for you to say anything about him now, be it praise or criticism of the guy and how he lived his life or whatever, seemed pretty shitty to me.

How about an apology about how you and your cohorts reamed a 70 year old guy with serious health problems who really didnt seem mentally there to defend himself? how about even addressing it?

You would do better offering your condolences and moving on to talking about LeBron, college football, Dunn or whatever. I like you and your show, I just found you a little pig-headed when you said you wouldnt apologize and lets talk about the whole story. You know you guys said some shitty stuff about him, now that he's dead; show a little class is all Im saying.

I'm a huge fan of Jasons...but for God sake, leave the grave dancing to an asswipe like Berns. Why mention Ronnies drinking? I mean really. Have some class, respect & dignity.

Obviously, I fully agree with you.
Here's a good column by someone who knew Ronnie and also appears on the score. Seems to have much more insight and class than anyone associated with the buffoon show of B&B's.

"This old Cub was the real thingBy Barry Rozner
It is said that as time goes on, it becomes more difficult to discover the genuine in life, to separate it from that which is forged.

That is especially true when it comes to friendship.

It is hard to define and even harder to find.

Unless Ron Santo was your friend.

On this account there was nothing vague. He either was or he wasn't, and if he was you knew it. But you had to be all in, because everything about Ron Santo was all in.

“Genuine'' is probably a word tossed about disingenuously when someone dies, as if canonization adds a measure of comfort.

But the truth is there are no degrees of it.

Ron Santo died at the age of 70 Thursday night surrounded by his family. He was the real thing. He was exactly as he appeared to be. He was genuine.

“He didn't tell anyone he was sick again,'' his wife, Vicki, said from their home in Arizona early Friday morning. “He didn't want to bother anyone. He didn't want to put everyone through it again.''

While cancer had returned and caused him a new set of problems, attacking them was normal for a man who had survived so many medical maladies and several dozen surgeries in the last 10 years. He was, by all accounts, a medical miracle, and there's no doubt he expected to survive again. But treatments took their toll and his heart gave out, an appropriate conclusion for Ron Santo, who lived his life with more heart, and more love for life, than most will ever dream.

He overcame much more than his considerable physical difficulties, including a troubled childhood in which his drunken father abused his mother and abandoned the family when Ron was only 6.

His mother and stepfather died in a car accident while driving to see Ron in spring training in 1972.

He fought his own demons and never complained. The more difficult the situation, the more he battled back.

I don't know many people that would have begun the fight he began again in October, but he did. There was no quit in him.

It's how he lived, and it's how he died.

“He wasn't going to give up,'' Vicki said through tears on Friday. “You know him. He expected to beat it. He was going to go through it all over again.''

Exhaustion finally won, and if you only knew how damaging some of these conflicts were, you'd be awe-struck that he lived as long as did.

But that was Santo. All heart.

It's why his eyes lit up when a friend walked into his radio booth.

It's why that giant smile consumed his face when he spoke of his children and especially his grandson.

It's why he cheered so loud when the Cubs played well, and why he sounded so miserable when they didn't.

That was all genuine emotion and he knew no other way to broadcast a game.

He wasn't a professional analyst taught the rights and wrongs of radio. He was first to admit that he didn't sound like the brightest man in the room, but he got most of his education on the streets of Garlic Gulch in Seattle.

A smart businessman who found wealth away from the game, when he was on the radio he was just whom he was, a rabid Cub fan who succumbed to the many lows and occasional highs of a suffering fan.

He never claimed to be anything else. Understandably, that style didn't work for some, but to most fans he was a part of their baseball day.

He was one of you, and I suspect most Cub fans will miss him dearly.

I thought, upon hearing the news, of so many stories, of so many moments from the early days we traveled together, of the nights out with Thom Brennaman and Bob Brenly, of the drives from Philly to Atlantic City.

I thought of the hundreds of dinners together, and how he paid every single time.

I thought of so many conversations with Ron in the hospital recovering from this surgery or that, of how shocking was his stamina.

One thing I've never been able to get out of my mind was his decision to get his second leg amputated.

Thing is, he volunteered.

When he had a problem with his only remaining foot, rather than go through the process he endured with his first leg, the many months of agony and uncertainty, he told doctors to take off the leg.

“This time I sort of took control and I told them that I wasn't going to go through eight or nine months of fighting it again,'' Santo said in December 2002. “The first one almost killed me and look how it wound up.

“This way, I'm shortening the inevitable. I also didn't want to miss any baseball, and by doing it now I'll have more time to get ready for the season.''

In other words, he had them saw off a leg so he could be ready for Opening Day.

“That's the truth,'' Santo admitted.

Some people go through a lot just to get to Wrigley Field on time. Santo gave a leg.

He truly lived to be at that park and be with his team. He loved the Cubs so much that it was rare when he wasn't completely blind to their faults, which led to some very loud arguments.

He was an incredibly strong man, even with all his ailments, and when he got those big mitts on you, his brute strength was still apparent.

As it was when I played golf with Santo and Ron Jr. last summer. Even with prosthetic legs, that man could crush a golf ball, and his touch around the greens was brilliant.

It was just fun to see him smiling and out with his son, reliving the good times and enjoying his life. In the clubhouse, we ran into Jim Dowdle and that led to another hour of stories and laughs.

Ron Santo's energy was the stuff of legend.

His highs were mountainous, his lows pushed him to the precipice.

It's why every Cubs win made his day so perfect, and every thought of the Hall of Fame made his day so horrible.

That's who he was to the end, as certain as a sunrise, as eternal as a sunset.

Genuine.

We often mourn the death of someone taken too soon, but this should be the celebration of a man who got every ounce of life from a body that offered him far less than he took from it.

Santo was a 25-year-old car still somehow in working order despite no tires or doors, a busted engine patched up with glue and duct tape, and leaking five kinds of fluid.

It was a fight he extended far beyond the scheduled 15 rounds. He did not get cheated.

And though you knew for years the call could come at any moment, it is nevertheless a difficult day.

I find real friends hard to come by, I guess because I'm not very good at pretending and don't have a surplus of patience when it comes to such things as respect and sincerity.

To say I will miss Ron Santo would be to suggest that only someday I might.

When in reality I already do."

That probably says as much about you as it does about him, you cheap prick.

The fact you guys see it as grave dancing is what's bothering me. Goff made a comment in passing about it, during a long praise of Santo. It certainly wasn't the point he was trying to make.

Goff isn't the only one talking about this. Teammates, people who knew him and other hosts brought up the same thing over the last 2 days. I think it was Fergie who flat out said a portion of his teammates just didn't like him. Is he an asshole too? When you're talking about remembering the guy, it's part of who he was.

I understand people who don't think a single negative thing should be said about someone who just passed, but that's just not how the real world functions. Most people remember everything, not just the best parts. That's what makes him, and us human, IMO.

The night the Cubs won the division in 2007 they showed Ronny walking around the clubhouse with a Corona in his hand. The next day Bernsie commented that someone with diabetes probably shouldn't be drinking alchohol. Well of course the calls started coming in.

Caller: I have diabetes and I have three vodkas a night. How dare you talk about Ronny like that, blah blah blah.

Dan: So how's your health, you doing OK?

Caller: Well, no, not really I'm pretty bad.

Dan: So, it's probably not a good idea to drink massive amounts of alchohol when you have diabetes?

Caller: No, not really.
