The last few days I have heard Steve Stone on various outlets talk Cubs and the fact that other than Palmeiro, the Cubs in the past 30 years or so have not developed a left handed hitting run producer.

Can't argue with that fact (Grace was a very good hitter but maybe not a run producer).

Of course Stone does this with his typical smarmy attitude..."the draft is 50 rounds, 30 years, talent all over the world and the Cubs can't produce one left handed power hitter?" was basically Stone's response.

Then I started thinking about the Sox, how many great left handed hitting run producers have they developed? The only one I can come up with the last 30 or so years was Robin Ventura. Before that what, Greg Walker? I can't recall, other than Bobby Bonilla, the Sox trading someone who became a left handed power hitter and Bonilla was drafted originally by the Pirates before the Sox picked him up in the rule 5 draft.

So the next time Stone is on the Score or Chicago Tribune Live or whatever and he brings up the Cubs inability to develop left handed power (with the smug attitude), I would like to see a Score host ask Stone about the Sox history. Will Stone use the same schtick to go after the Sox? Of course not, but i would like to see his response.

Stone is a predictable, whiny jerk. He's out selling his book, that I'm sure is just as arrogant as him talking.

Here's a jackass who walked away from WGN. He NEVER got let go, he chose to leave. Nice move, probably a worse move than North's turning down the contract offered to him.

How about Harold Baines and Ray Durham (switch-hitter)?

i think stone walked away after management wanted to filter him.. sometimes the truth hurts and the cubs could not handle the truth. i like stone and find him real knowledgeable. i think some cubs fans are salty, what has stone said that was not factually correct?

Baines came up in '80, over 30 years ago, which was Stone's time frame.

I thought about Durham and looked at his stats. He did have a 90 RBI season, but Grace had a few 90 RBI seasons, so I figure they cancel each other out.

Stone said nothing incorrect, but its the smug attitude and the way he says things that annoy me.

As an example if the Cubs came into the season with no proven closer and the closer the cubs had chosed had blown his first two save chances what would Stone say

1) The Cub closer his just finding his bearings, he has never closed before and it is an adjustment (Stone said something like this on Sunday morning talking about Thornton)

or

2) The Cubs have a $130 million dollar payroll and in their infinite wisdom decided not to worry about a closer ( add sarcasm)

What do you think he would say?

im guessing #2..that actually sounds like a stone quote.. but that is what happens when you don't win anything for over a century, and have a massive payroll in a very easy division

He didn't suddenly become smug know-it-all when he left the employ of Chicago National League Baseball Club Inc. He's always been a smug bastard. But I never heard a Cub fan mention it until the last two seasons.

Don't think anyone is saying he's wrong, question is would he say the same thing about the Sox. The Thornton example cited is a pretty good one and he didnt have much to say about that.

Probably because the Sox employ him and he loves sticking it to the Cubs any chance he gets.

He is what he is. Like JORR said he's always been a smug know-it-all.

But with the Cubs I rarely heard Stone outside the Cub broadcasts. He certainly wasn't on the Score (in fact didn't some of the Score hosts openly show their disdain for him when he was still with the Cubs?) Maybe he was on WGN Sportnite or whatever they call their 7:00 pm show but I rarely ever heard him outside the Cub broadcast. And during Cub broadcasts he didn't come across the same way he does now when he is analyzing baseball, outside the broadcast such as when he is the SCore baseball expert

One of the very few times I heard Stone outside the game broadcast was late in 2004 and the whole Dusty Baker affair. I remember thinking, boy you never hear him on the radio.

And I almost never heard him pontificate about the Sox, and if he did, it certainly wasn't the smug way he talks about the Cubs now.

Maybe Stone has always been a prick, but again I never thought he came across that away when broadcasting the Cubs, but now that he is all over the place and as exposed as he is, Chicago Tribune Live one day, the Score a couple days later, the smug attitude is so much more apparent.

You would be wrong there, Rodney. I may be the only one here that heard it, but I discovered Stone's smug douchebaggery in 2001 when he was on Sports Central with Kap and Waddle. They called it "Stone on the phone". He was out with what was called a Valley Virus and we got the rotation of Dave and Joe on the Cub broadcasts. It was the first time I was exposed to Stone outside of the Baseball broadcast and he was a smarmy, know-it-all, condescending shit back then. So, just because you didn't have the pleasure of making the acquaintance of a Cub fan who had no use for Stone, doesn't mean we didn't exist.

I had an inkling of his overall prickery while he worked with Harry, jis appearances with Kap and Waddle cemented my opinion of him being an assbag.

If I were to call the Score during one of Stone's segments and ask Stone "How come the Sox have been able to develop only one lefthanded power hitter in the last 30 years" do you think Stone would answer the same way as he did about the Cubs? No.

And that is my point. If Stone had just said "The Cubs have had problems in their farm system developing a presence from the left side of the plate", fine and that is 100% correct.

Stone will tip toe around any Sox issues but will gleefully give a snide remark about the Cubs. I guess my baseball expert would treat both sides equally, but obviously that ain't going to happen.

Isn't the reason he's no longer with the Cubs because he criticized them? He criticizes the Sox too. And he does it in the same smug know-it-all way.

That last plane ride that Stone and Chip had with Moises and Mercker and crew must have been a hoot. Chip pissing down his leg and Alou pissing on everybodys hands. Solid not miss pay per view. Who knew?

Your thoughts are wrong.

Stone actually wanted the team to filter , or better yet, stop players from verbally attacking him.

Stone was not censored at all and after they didnt resign Chip Caray, stone walked out the door..and the Cubs did nothing to stop him.

I do think Jim Hendry wanted him to leave as he didnt need an announcer causing any more issues than he had with a team

Which works perfectly for Stone right now on the Southside where they have the best owner, manager, GM, trainer, Pitching coach, groundskeeper, play by play guy, food, parking...oh, did you hear, The got a bar outside the park now!

Steve is very knowledgable about the game, which makes for interesting White Sox broadcasts.
My only issue with Stoney deals with his spots on The Score. He normally uses that time on the air to take a swipe at his former employer -- which seems to make the case that he still has some resentment for what transpired on the North Side.
In some sense, it's a little like Hub and the way he talks about the Bears -- since he was released from the radio broadcasts.

What was Stone's two-year sabbatical all about? I thought he had some illness, but the article I found said he resigned to become a "competition consultant."

Fuck Hendry. Stone was right. WTF are Cubs players doing listening to the radio broadcast & calling the radio booth during games to bitch & complain about Stone being critical? These assholes should have played for the Sox when Jimmy & Harry were dong the games.

Ya stone is awesome. Always has been. The cubs got pissed at him for talking the truth. Guy is right about what he said, that's how pathetic the cubs are, that's why we haven't won in 100+ years, POS organization. I know in the past he wanted to be in some kind of role w/ the cubs but they didnt want him in the front office. So F them. I bet you if he was the manager or GM in the Pinella years, they'd get farther than getting swept twice in the playoffs.

Sad that Stoney isn't part of the cubs anymore. Him and Harry use to rip those bums a new one and weren't afraid of doing so.
