Dahl's son in on Web site jabs at columnist
Teddy Greenstein
ON SPORTS MEDIA AND COLLEGES

July 17, 2006

Roll the closing credits. The suspense is over.

The second mastermind behind the jaythejoke.com Web site has publicly revealed himself.

Late last week, radio host Steve Dahl introduced him during his show on WCKG-FM 105.9. So who is the mystery blogger? Dahl's 25-year-old son, Pat.

"I was never really trying to hide my identity," Pat Dahl said Sunday. "I just didn't want to drag my dad into it."

Both the Tribune and Chicago Reader, in stories about the Web site that mocks Sun-Times columnist Jay Mariotti, had declined to use Pat Dahl's name. Both mentioned Lakeview resident Matt Lynch, the other co-founder of jaythejoke.com.

But after Dahl was criticized—not by name—in the Reader story as "shameless and hypocritical" for attacking Mariotti anonymously, Dahl stepped forward.

As Steve Dahl wrote in his blog: "I think the fun of it is remaining anonymous, but since I don't want anyone thinking my son is a coward, we talked about it on the air on Thursday."

Mariotti, meanwhile, remains "on vacation." His last column ran June 26, six days after White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen used a derogatory term to describe him and the same day he appeared on "Chicago Tonight" and criticized the Sun-Times for not protecting him from supposed threats emanating from the Sox.

Mariotti has continued to appear on ESPN's "Around the Horn" during his vacation, which, Sun-Times editor in chief John Barron told the Reader, will continue for "weeks and weeks and weeks."

Do people recall that a few days after the Ozzie thing, Marriotti also trashed his bosses at the Sun Times on the Mully and Hanley show? Greenstein did a review of that and a few days later Marriotti was gone. In case you forgot, the Teddy column is here:

Trashing your bosses on radio and TV is rarely productive and often leads to losing one's job. And I wouldn't be surprised if it's a contract violation as well. I wouldn't be surprised if Jay the Joke never returns to the Sun Times or Chicago.

does this mean Mully and Hanley lied about Jay not being suspended?

Mully and Hanley are like scared kids if they didn't say he was suspended. He's been off 3 weeks for christ sakes. Any idiot can figure it out. Isn't it ironic that Ozzie will be the cause of Jay getting fired. Not for the column he wrote about Ozzie but for the subsequent things that transpired after. Jay blasting his bosses was triggered by Ozzie.

Beardown, please email this to Carmen DeFalco. This is true irony. Carmine misuses the term on a near daily basis as a substitute for transitional words like "interestingly". This is the perfect example for him.

i swear that Mully and Hanley still contend Jay is on vacation. they even told Mike North that. if they know and are lying they are two company men.

It's one thing to say "I don't know". Everybody would know you are bull shitting but I would understand. But to insist he is still on vacation is insulting everybody's intelligence. We're suppose to beleive he had a 3 week vacation. No major columnist gets that much consecutive time off. It's just a coincidence it came on the heels of Jay ripping his boss. Please

I don't particularly care for Jay Mariotti whatsoever, but what the f*ck did Jay do to deserve this:

Mariotti has continued to appear on ESPN's "Around the Horn" during his vacation, which, Sun-Times editor in chief John Barron told the Reader, will continue for "weeks and weeks and weeks."

The proof in the proverbial pudding will be the upcoming British Open. If Jay is absent during this, I'll wonder if somethings up. He seems to hate Chicago, so maybe this was his chance to try and catch on with the network.

Wow I didn't know Pat was responsible for that site. He's a regular poster on Whitesoxinteractive and is in the game chat room there all the time. I hope Jay never sets foot in Chicago again. Good riddance.

His Dad has always ripped on message board posters saying they are cowards for hiding behind a computer. His son then starts a site dedicated to bashing a guy and one of the reasons he hates Jay is because Jay wont show up in the clubhouse, and then he has his Dad pimp the site on his radio show and pappy Dull never says he has a realtionship to the person running the site. Then to dig up dirt on Miner, Dull drags in everyones favirote Sun-Times wife beating columnist Neil Steinberg, fucking cuntstain Dull.

I'm sick of BB and others doing the, "Jay is an awful man and I have some awful horror stories about him", well fess up. And Nas hinted at it, the reason alot of people wanna hate Jay is becuse he is the most popular sports columnists in Chicago and gets alot of fame from it and I think many are jealous.

I know most of the people on this board don't like him but I think the criticism sometimes is unfair. We are always asking for the people that cover sports in this town to be critical of the teams when needed but then everyone bashes Jay for doing it. Is Jay at times overly critical of the Sox? Yes. When they proved him wrong last year, he acknowledged it.

Nas, I don't feel that people dislike Mariotti because he is critical of local teams. Fair and well-reasoned criticism is always welcome. Unfortunately, those adjectives rarely apply to Jay. With regard to the White Sox (& to a lesser extent the Bulls) - Jay's views are ridiculously skewed by his hatred for Reinsdorf. Further, as has been pointed out frequently both here and on the air...He is a wind-sock. Does he write interesting columns? Usually. Is he a self-important blow-hard? Always. That's why I read him but don't like him.

"They don't like me because they're all jealous"...is a nice way to make yourself feel better. However, sometimes it pays to look in the mirror. Usually when someone is universally disliked it's well-deserved. With regard to Jay, I have yet to hear someone say they like him as a person.

Well said. Remember, this is the guy who wrote:

"(I am) launching a campaign demanding that (Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf) sell the team to a group with the financial means and commitment -- the Comcast Sports empire, perhaps -- to compete for championships in a big market. Otherwise, the Sox might tumble into total irrelevance while The Ballmall Formerly Known as Comiskey Park becomes a sausage factory. Reinsdorf... might as well wave another white flag before next season..... Think I'm underestimating the Sox' chances next year? ... Hell, the Sox might be a .500 club....If (Reinsdorf's) franchise isn't dying, it never has seemed more irrelevant in this town...(What Smart fans) want to know is how the Sox plan to win a World Series. Answer: They won't, as long as Reinsdorf and his people own the team. Please sell it."
