I'm a big fan of this guy. Unlike many of the fill-ins/evening/weekend hosts, he doesn't spend a lot of time crafting a persona or attacking the listener with his unique style. If you listen to his solo work in a vacuum, it's solid --- but when you consider it amongst it's counterparts (horrid radio poison like Larry Holmes, pseudo tough guy (and expert) Jason Goff, or any of the Grote/McKnight/Finfer "just a guy" guys who are far more annoying and vanilla than entertaining) he delivers a SPECTACULAR show.

Anyway, he spends a lot time (when I do catch him on-air) telling people to email him to get "on a list" where he updates his fans as to when he'll be on-air. Has anyone done this? Does he actually send it out weekly? I think his email is just "matt@....." - but next time I hear him pimp it I will go ahead and send a note to get on the list.

I have to say that his pending(?) nuptials are a good thing - as I really wasn't a fan of the frat guy-like persona he was tagged with (the whole drinky thing, Team Lodge etc). I honestly don't know how much of that he pushed himself, but him settling down (even more than he was) will hopefully lead to him getting more and more air time and focusing more on sports/entertainment than the usual "OmG, that Score party last night at Herb's apartment, well that was a THING"-type stories that Goff, and the rest of the wannabes, seem to think the audience wants to hear.

All that said, when is ole Matt on the air next!?!

I think Matt does a good solo show too. I don't catch it often, but when I do, it's solid sports radio, and yes, is largely devoid of Shake That bullshit. I thought he did a pretty nice job on Blackhawks postgame last year, which surprised me, because I never thought of him as a hockey guy. It certainly had never shone through on afternoons.

I'm sad for him that he had to deal with idiot Grobstein callers this past week. Abbatacola has been a great host whenever he gets to do it. Goff is good too, but Matty doesn't do the Larryesque bullshit that Goff has taken a liking to recently. Who the fuck copies loho?

I need you to listen the entire time, and pick out one moment that really bothered you. It's Matt, so it shouldn't be too hard.

Hi Matty! :D

I too am a big fan of Matty. I really wish Mitch would have the balls to give the young guys like Matty & Jason a full time prime time gig. Actually, Matty & Jason together would be great

Matt's thoughts on Dirk are dead on. Be better. You won.

I know complaining about callers on the overnight show is pointless, but I was just listening to the podcast and the guy saying Nowitzki and Pierce won't make the hall of fame because "they haven't played long enough" seriously needs help.

I'd love to podcast, but clearly CBS can't handle the responsibility of getting them on the website

Post subject:  Re: The Matt Abbatacola Show thread

Abbatacola's overnight fill-ins have been archived under Les' name, not Matt's. Last night's show might not be on the main CBS podcast page yet, but each hour is definitely already up on the RSS feed.

I just can't get into Bat Amattacola's whole radio schtick... it always seems like he's pissed off and edgy about something for no discernible reason whatsoever. He's got this aura of defiance like there's a chip on his shoulder and he's HELLBENT TO PROVE THAT...

1) he's NOT boers and/or bernstein. they're weird gay and crap and he's not them, he just happens to have a nice little gig producing them.

2) he's got some damn relevant points cuz HE'S NOT BOERS AND/OR BERNSTEIN! HE IS HIS OWN ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SPORTS KNOWLEDGE!

3) if you didn't catch the obvious FUCKING CLUE yet, HE'S NOT BOERS AND/OR BERNSTEIN, CAPISH?!?!

So yeah, I dunno, there's just something irascible about having a guy angrily talking down at me about sports that turns me off the whole experience... and I bet he's a pretty cool guy who doesn't afraid of anything, I know that he isn't boers and/or bernstein, but really sir drinky, could you time travel back to the 90s take a chill pill and thusly chillax on the airwaves? If you didn't have that unnecessary chip on your shoulder I think you'd be a pretty solid listen.

See I think he's toned that down. He used to be much worse as far as yelling at callers.

Post subject:  Re: The Matt Abbatacola Show thread

I dunno, he was getting pretty worked up when people kept calling to talk about/defend Dirk for walking off the court at the end of the game. Though it was kind of funny how whenever he thought he'd closed the book on the subject, the next immediate caller would bring it up.

Ok. That must've been after I fell asleep.

When I listened, the only guys he was getting short with were the drunken buffoons.

Post subject:  Re: The Matt Abbatacola Show thread

I heard part of his show last night, but I was honestly OD'd on the "narrative" of everyone being pissed that the media was making this about how "Miami lost" and not how "Dallas won". Seriously, one of the many negatives of this online world (alongside abortions like RFDC) is the constant over-analysis of "how the media is telling the story" rather than just "reporting the news". The media's biting it's own snake, so to speak (cream of the class), and analyzing how poorly parts of it are analyzing the headline of a given story. Oy!

Matt's good - it's funny how he's stuck doing third shift fill-in work and the white "team player" is busy sitting in the big chair, prime time. Ole Jesse needs to get over to Score HQs and represent, STAT! Wait.

Jason Goff is to Peter Tom Willis as Matt is to Tom Brady.

Listen, to each their own, but even drinky's new wife wouldn't say he's the "Tom Brady" of anything.

P.T Willis is a stretch for Goff too. That's too much of a compliment.

I'm sure that statement left Goff smarting

Ha! didn't think I had to mention that I wasn't referring to physical appearance.....
If I was I would say Matt is John Mabry and Jason is morphing into J. Hood.

Here goes wayyyy to much detail:
Jason-
Everybody likes Jason (myself included) as a producer and thought once he got his shot at hosting shows he would be great......and isn't. Fake laughing, cliches, B&B talking points, pretend inside sources, talks like he's about to go under water....just not very good. Could be worse but not good.
P.T. was a good college QB and everyone chanted for him to play. It turned out the next level was too much.

Matt-
Even if you like him as a producer you have to admit he sounds like he hates his job. He went to "college" in a strip mall that used a 7-Eleven as it's student union.
His show is actually pretty good. He seems to respect his callers. He's not afraid to upset B&B by going away from the WSOX script.
Bradys story is well documented.

As Doug Buffone says (every 5 minutes) The Bottom Line is......Jason is good in small spurts but Matt can actually carry on an adult conversation without having to breath into a paper bag.
