ESPN FIRES REYNOLDS

By ANDREW MARCHAND

July 25, 2006 -- ESPN yesterday fired analyst Harold Reynolds from Baseball Tonight, sources told The Post. The reason was not immediately known.

"We are not going to comment," ESPN VP Josh Krulewitz said.

When asked how they are going to explain that Reynolds will never be on the air again, Krulewitz still declined comment.

Reynolds did not return calls.

Reynolds, 45, had been with ESPN 11 years. He had been a fixture on the show, which is a gathering spot for baseball fans, players and team executives.

The program already is dealing with the loss of information man Peter Gammons. Gammons is recovering from a brain aneurysm that occurred at the end of last month. The show's main analysts had been Reynolds, Gammons and John Kruk.

In Gammons' absence, ex-Met GM Steve Phillips has played a bigger role on the show. The program uses several analysts, including Orel Hershiser, Tino Martinez and Jeff Brantley.

Last night, host Karl Ravech was joined by Kruk and Phillips. Reynolds usually is on Monday nights.

Reynolds was known for a smooth style that usually was player friendly. He never found himself in too much controversy for what he said on the air. In fact, ESPN was so high on him he was expected to stay with the network through its just signed eight-year deal with MLB.

Now, after yesterday, Reynolds is no longer welcome in Bristol.

Interesting. I wonder what he did. I always like Reynolds on there.

He knew his job and did it well, something ESPN will not tolerate from anyone. That's why they are getting Steve Phillips to replace him

I read that he refused to appear in a "Mobile ESPN" commercial . . . so they canned him.

There has to be more to this story. It's one thing to let him go after the season. Then it's just "we think we can find somebody better". But becasue they fired him in the middle like this means that it wasn't planned and Reynolds did something. Maybe he grabbed an interns ass or something like that?

He really wasn't anything special. He loved every player and never thought a manager should be fired. He'd say insightful things like "the Tigers are good" or "The Mets won't blow this 13 game lead"

I like Phillips. He actually says things.

I agree Beardown, but every now and then I like a guy who isn't so overly opinionated and ripping on everyone. To me, its a little refreshing to have on a 3 man show. He' very replaceable, but he seemed like a good guy......who might have grabbed an intern's ass.

It could just be that they have too many baseball analysts, and they decided he was expendable? There is a rotating cast of about 40 characters for BBTN; it would be similar to why Dibble was let go from ESPN completely (not just Dan Patrick).

I agree with that. He really did seem like a nice guy. That makes it surprising because you don't see him being an ass hole in production meetings or being very demanding. He seemed like a good ESPN soldier. That's why there has to be something more to the story.

I don't want guys to criticize just for the sake of doing it. But c'mon there have to be times where you get on somebody.

I don't feel that Reynolds was afraid to get on guys, I think he had a smoother way of doing it so it didn't seem like a personal attack (which is what happens in most cases with other guys). Harold was willing to say "he needs to make that play" without killing the guy in doing so - he let the given highlight speak for itself.

Yeah but they did lose Gammons who was a part of that show sometimes. I hope they don't replace him with Hersheiser. That guys scares me when he looks at the camera with those cocked eybrows and that intense look as he explains how to throw a spliter. Relax buddy.

Rumor has it that Reynolds was fired for using his Brain.

ESPN is a joke. Michael Irvin is caught with crack in his car but nothing happens to him. Kruk is a complete moron who said Randy Johnson was going to win 30 games last year. And that Brantley guy on the show is pretty much wrong on all his analysis.

Hey, but they still got Skip Bayless!

Guys, I sent in another one of those top ten lists giving credit to the message boarders. I added a few. I doubt they'll read this one like the manniversary one, but I gave it a shot. Here it is...

Thumbs Down to ESPN if they fired Harold Reynolds for no particular reason other than wanting to replace him.

Top Ten Reasons Harold Reynolds was fired by Chicago Sports Fan Message Boarders....

10. There is a rotating cast of 40 personalities on Baseball Tonight and someone had to go.

9. He knew his job and did it well, something ESPN will not tolerate from anyone.

8. He didn't personally attack some for a bad play they made. Instead he pointed out the error and let the highlight speak for itself.

7. He might have touched an intern's ass or said something deragtory about women we don't know about. This should have been done on-air like it is on ESPN Radio 1000 from nine to noon.

6. He lost in the all important celebrity All-Star game that everyone cares so much about at ESPN.

5. He wasn't an arrogant ass on or off the camera which is strictly against ESPN TV protocal.

4. ESPN wanted to replace Harold with Orel Hersheiser because they love the way he looks at the camera with those cocked eybrows and that intense look as he explains how to throw a splitter.

3. He refused to appear in a "Mobile ESPN" commercial . . . so they canned him.

2. He didn't make obsure comments like he invented the question mark or that Randy Johnson was going to win 30 games this year.

1. He wasn't caught with crack in his car like a good ex-jock should have.

Interesting stuff...

Was This Why Harold Got The Axe?

We can't say for sure why Harold Reynolds was fired from ESPN yesterday, because ESPN hasn't put out a statement or anything (and they don't have to), but we can tell you what the chatter in Bristol is: Everyone is hearing sexual harassment. Every single email we've received from the inside about this today has used those very two words.

Again, nothing concrete on this. But that is definitely what they're whispering in Bristol. Some highlights:

• Thirdhand info, but I'm told it's sexual harassment. There were allegations of inappropriate actions between him and female PAs on a couple different occasions, so I'm not entirely shocked.

• It's apparently sexual harassment, but no one knows who the victim was. It went down over the course of the weekend.

• I have on good authority that HR was fired for all things, hitting on girls. Allegedly, this has been going on for a while. The last straw was when a new PA was having none of what Harold had to offer and turned him in.

• Harold Reynolds was fired more or less for copious amounts of sexual harassment. Apparently, he brazenly hits on female employees constantly, despite the fact that his wife just had a kid six months ago. He was warned by the big-wigs on numerous occasions to cool it with the ladies, but someone finally lodged a complaint, and he was canned immediately.

• It's very difficult to get fired from ESPN. It takes multiple offenses ... they're usually so worried about getting sued for unlawful termination that people are suspended multiple times for the same repeated behavior before it finally comes to getting fired. Within the walls of the campus, there are only a few on-air talent guys that had an honest reputation as being overly friendly with the ladies, and HR was one of them.

So anyway, that's what they're saying on the Bristol campus. But since ESPN doesn't have to say anything -- in-house or otherwise -- and neither does Reynolds, we might never know for sure. (No announcement, we're told, has been made to the staff.) That's what they're saying, though; we didn't receive a single email suggesting anything but that.

But that's not what we're saying, because we don't know. To be clear.

Say Goodnight, Harold [Deadspin]

Great minds Coach.

My first thought was, "Hmm, how iron clad is that Singleton contract?"

They better find somebody decent to replace him 'cause Hersheiser, Brantley, and Martinez suck. They probably plan to use a 3 man rotation of Chris Berman, Stuart Scott, and Stephen A. Smith...

Mongo, hadn't seen you in a while on here...nice to have you back.

And your obvious tounge-in-cheek prediction, which means ESPN probably has it in the cards, comes true than my televison will combust into flames

The interesting thing in the whole scenario is that he was canned so quickly. Usually the employer will keep someone on during litigation to help defend themselves and him. I have to think that they have some strong evidence against him or he'd be re-assigned but still with the network.

he'll get a job somewhere else. If you click on the link that Rocks posted, there's something in the end about a supposed "insider" saying HR got fired for having a meltdown in production about how A-Rod was to be covered during the Yankees-Rangers series....so who the "f" knows???

Yeah, but I cant believe that a guy who's had one of the best jobs in sports for 11 years would go and blow it over something as dumb as the coverage of A-Rod. And if anything ESPN would just give him some time off, not fire him. Unless he made an anti-semetic statement to one of the higher up's.

Ok, Harold, but if you grab her can during the hug, you're going to get canned.

"This was a total misunderstanding," Reynolds told The Post. "My goal is to sit down and get back. To be honest with you, I gave a woman a hug and I felt like it was misinterpreted."

Reynolds declined to give any more details. The woman who accused Reynolds of the sexual harassment is an ESPN co-worker, according to sources. "
