Would you pay $10/month to hear him?

Veteran on-air radio personality Steve Dahl is staying in cyberspace. Eschewing traditional broadcasting, Dahl announced plans Monday to turn his daily podcast in a subscription-based service.

Beginning Aug. 1, downloading the podcasts will cost $9.95 per month. Dahl revealed his plans in a noontime Twitter announcement to his 13,000-plus followers.

Dahl, whose contract with CBS expired last week, has received about $1 million annually to stay off the air since being ousted from WJMK-FM in 2008. He began podcasting from his basement in September 2009, producing some 7.5 million downloads of his daily 90-minute show, according to his spokeswoman.

Dahl's 30-year broadcasting career includes trailblazing tenures at WLUP-FM, WLS-AM & FM and WCKG-FM, and the infamous 1979 Disco Demolition Night at Comiskey Park, which incited an on-field riot and forced the White Sox to forfeit a baseball game.

What if the SCORE starts charging too?

nope. he will get his hardcore fans to pay, i would guess 500-1000 pay him. which is more money than pappy makes. if pappy charged for access to his youtube rants, he would not get to double-digits in actual paying listeners.

I think I stopped listening to this chronic complainer about 25 years ago.

When the breakup took place it was over. Buzz was OK with Dahl, but outside of that, his team was just the YES men and women. Everything was "am i right" YES STEVE, YES YES

I would not pay for any podcast of anyone, wouldn't even think about it.

I listen to almost the entire B&B show everyday on podcasts but I still wouldn't pay $10 per month. Maybe a $20-$30 yearly fee but that is about it. I've often wondered when ESPN is going to set up something much like their Insider feature for their podcasts.

$60,000 to $120,000 a year for a part time job especially with a shitload of money in the bank?
Not too shabby for Dahl, I would say.
The difference is that Don't Fade Me could never get a tenth of that.

Yeah it's kind of a shit move on Dahl's part, IMO. While I can't blame him, it's kind of like he's extorting the people who actually DO listen to him... it's like "hey, you still listen to me? put your money where your mouth is"

I mean, make the $$$$ if you can make it, but the only people you're turning the screws on are your hardcore fans.

The SCORE, for example, actually could create a REAL VIP type membership, but that would require hiring someone to run it and acquire real benefits. Unlike the crap Groupon throws out these days "1/2 off at shitty dining establishment on Wed night before 6 PM, no drinks, etc etc etc"

The 1970s renegade act was great, but you are 100% correct.
These guys just can't seem to figure out that out of sight is out of mind.

I remember saying a few years ago that more people should do this. You don't even need a lot of people. Could Dahl get 500 people to pay? Maybe. Think about it.

500 people = $5,000 a month = $60,000 a year.

That aint bad. If you get 1,000 people it's 120k a year. I really don't know how many people will pay for Dahl but you don't need a lot of listeners to make decent money.

I'll bet someone like Bernstein could get 1,000 people to pay 10 bucks a month.

Plus it seems to me that there would be no overhead for something like this. You really have no expenses to produce this. You do it from your house and you serve as your own producer.

He's got like 3 people working for him. I assume it's no big deal to pay them out of pocket when you are pulling in $1 mil/year from CBS. But, now he's looking for a way to get these people paid.

Yeah, Dahl has a staff. I listened to his podcast once. It's not just him talking to himself in his basement.

exactly, he would not clear all the money. my guess is he would need at least 3000 subscribers to make decent money after all expenses. and i would guess he would have a drop off rate of 50-60% after 6 months. dahl will be begging for a gary reunion before the year is out cause he didn't save lots of $$$ from his past huge contracts. by the way, how are his son's entertainment careers going? i thought one of his kids was on wckg with his own show until the station changed formats. he should be on in some major market by now

The one kid is a meteorologist on WGN radio.

I hear him frequently when I'm trying to win a ladybug alarm clock.

His son that was on WCKG for a short time had an okay show I thought. For an evening show, it was better than most of the crap on the air. I wasn't a dedicated listener, but if I ever worked late, or was out, I would have it on in the car.

Oh. If he has to pay 3 people then this won't work. Cuz you gotta figure three people would need at least 30k a year to make it worth doing.

Why not just make the wife be the sound person/call screener? Why does he need 3 people? Most big time radio shows get by with two. B&B do it with two runners.
