MIKE, THE MOVIE? Sounds like the roller coaster, rags-to-riches life of Our Town’s own Mike North could end up on the big screen. The life and times of the hot-dog-stand-owner-turned-radio-and-TV personality has captured the interest of well-known writer Max Allen Collins.
In a chat with the Iowa-based Collins this week, I learned he and North have had a number of serious meetings, as the Road to Perdition author contemplates the kind of screenplay he’d like to write. “I think Mike’s incredible life would make a fascinating film,” said Collins. “I see it having a similar feel to Sandra Bullock’s ‘The Blind Side.’
“Mike has had a very Horatio Alger kind of life. . . . He is such a vivid personality and isn’t afraid of sharing the tough times — including his battle with alcohol,” added Collins, clearly excited about the project.
