With no NBA in sight for the forseeable future due to the nagging lockout, it appears as if college basketball will have to do. With that in mind, 670 The SCORE has signed on again this season as the home for DePaul Blue Demons' basketball for the 14th season in a row. Just like a year ago, DePaul games will be described by Zach Zaidman & Laurence Holmes painting the picture for the CBS Radio-owned sports talker's 27 game schedule, which includes the bulk of non-conference games as well as the upcoming Big East schedule early next year. This weekend's exhibition game vs. Lewis University, the first of 4 games DePaul will play on campus at Lincoln Park's McGrath Arena Saturday night, will NOT be broadcast on The SCORE. It will be audio streamed on BlueTube at depaulbluedemons.com. DePaul's games in the made-for-ESPN Old Spice Classic at ESPN's Wide World of Sports in Orlando November 24th-27th will not be broadcast on WSCR either. SportsRadio 670's first game will be the second DePaul game on campus, the Friday, November 11th game vs. Texas-Pan American starting at 7:50p with the pregame show. Tipoff is set for 8p in Lincoln Park. PTFB? I think so... Needless to say, not much is expected again this season from head coach Oliver Purnell's team. They're picked for dead last AGAIN this year in the Big East Conference. |

After I got my letter from the Bulls for tryouts, I chose not to do so and go become a CPA! However, I was as big of a DePaul hoops fan as you could find. Lived across the street from Aloomni hall, was there probably everyday, got to practice with the team, run some meat squad plays, etc etc, The fact they alienated my interest over the years is a crime and what the ruined is just terrible. They have had chances to make it right with better facilities on campus and chose to continue to spend the least on mens basketball than anyone in the Big East. The acceptance of losing and being TERRIBLE was a University choice to be known as a academic institution and make sure all the other sports re taken care of. A state of the art womens softball field????? |

the solution is real simple...build a chicago arena and hire a black guy with city ties like isiah thomas to recruit the public league....hard to believe they can not figure this out. |

This takes cash. They just dont want to spend it on mens basketball, even if it could be a huge moneymaker. They have so few games on local TV now, that I can only hope the big east kicks them out and they then need to explore doing something. I know people have approached them for multi use facilities and they tell them how happy they are are the Horizon! Of course they are, you dont pay anything to play there! You sell tickets, ads and sponsorships and Rosemont does all the vending, boxes and parking. |

The worst mistake they made was taking the games off campus. But they kind of had a perfect storm when they got popular in the late 70s. The Bulls were no damn good at the time. Joey recruited Ron Norwood out of East Orange, NJ which led to Gary Garland and Clyde Bradshaw. Corzine developed into a top big man and Joe Ponsetto was a tough banger. And Curtis Watkins was a good player from Thornton. It just so happened that the network cut away from the national game that turned into an unexpected blowout to Notre Dame and DePaul. DePaul was coming out of a huddle and the leprechaun was driving a radio-controlled car with a little sign that said GO IRISH! on it and he ran it right in front of Ponsetto who kicked it into a million pieces. Garland hit the game-winner and "We Are DePaul!" was born. That team made it to the Elite 8 and then Aguirre came in the next year and they made the Final Four. I never rooted for Illini hoops when I was in college. I was a DePaul fan. I'm sure there were a lot of guys from Chicago just like me. |

BigFan, as I'm just a few weeks away from my 40th birthday, I'm old enough to remember when DePaul basketball was a big deal. I'm old enough to remember when WGN broadcast the games on both TV & on 720 AM before 670 The SCORE took over the radio broadcasts, I believe back in 1997. I'm also old enough to remember when Allstate Arena, then known as Rosemont Horizon, was a snake pit for visiting schools and was packed night after night back in the day as well. It's no longer the case. Just to prove how times have changed, chew on this. In addition to The SCORE carrying the radio rights to DePaul, a channel I certainly don't have, WCUU, better known as The U TOO, will be carrying the ESPN-produced games this season via the Big East Network. If DePaul's not on any of the other ESPN family of networks, good luck finding the games on TV! |

I'm like many of the posters and remember when DePaul hoops was pretty exciting. My understanding about the Rosemont thing is that they have a super-long term lease out there. Plus, there is very little room for expansion in Lincoln Park--although I always thought that somewhere west of the campus near Ashland and the Clyborn Metra stop would be ideal: walking distance from campus, close to freeways/metra, and probably cheaper real estate where you wouldn't get neighborhood blowback for expansion. The other thought is: why not United Center? I know you have Bulls and Hawks, circus, etc..., but we are only talking about 15 games a year. I'm sure Wirtz and Reinstorf want serious cabbage for it, but it would help the program big time. |

It's not just that DePaul is bad, it's that college basketball has the most meaningless regular season of any sport. An on-campus facility wouldn't make a significant difference in the program's direction, imo. They are too far gone. |
