Hooray! Remedial NBA thoughts buffered with "inside info" regurgitated from Twitter timelines and various hoops blogs! Wahoo! Oh, and don't forget his trademark rapid-fire, taking a breath is for pussies, machine gun delivery!!!

Mostly joking, but holding him up as some sort of hoops guy is laughable at best....great, he likes basketball. Must be an expert. Got it.

Hoops Roundtable sounds good.

Not just Goff, but guests from around the country as well.

I'm not a big NBA fan, but basketball talk on the radio always seems to work for me... it seems like the hosts in this town are a lot more knowledgeable about the basketball than they are about hockey, and it's not even remotely close...

yet you cannot get 5 minutes of college football talk beyond the PSU sex scandal from any host at any time. I think college sports are a major blind spot at the station.

The Mickey Mouse station has the same problem, if I remember correctly.

Locally, yes, although Hood will drop some college/high school sports on you.

No, it doesn't help. However, driving down Lincoln Avenue and seeing flags of a different Big 10 team on every corner, I am fairly confident you could get people to listen to some non Illini/Cats discussion.

I have to amend what I wrote. The Score gives Di Nardo an hour at 10 p.m. once a week.

Chicago is a weird college sports town. There is no dominant team that you can cover but the Big Ten + Notre Dame fan base is huge. It's a chicken and egg thing though. Chicago radio mostly ignores it, and shows like B&B do it very badly unless they bring in someone else who can at least temporarily stop them from doing their shtick. Therefore, people don't go to Chicago radio to hear talk on it.

I was amazed last week when I was driving around in my car and I turned on the Fan here in New York and they were all over college football. NYC is probably the worst major college sports town and yet it was better than anything I ever heard about national college football in Chicago outside of DiNardo and Charles Davis on MJH.

8)

Again, I'm not against the idea of a host who likes basketball being designated 'expert'. And Goff is more comfortable talking NBA than nearly all the other hosts, but Goff in particular lacks actual expertise.

Last night's roundtable was a good late-night listen, but there were still some headscratchers, especially when they got off the Bulls to Dwight Howard.

1. Goff kept his stance that because Dwight Howard isn't as good as Goff wishes he was, Howard's not one of the best players in the league.

2. If Goff was Orlando and the Clippers were interested, he'd ask for Blake Griffin. I sorta get the point of not trading a star without getting a star back, but it's a non-starter of an argument: the Clippers aren't dealing Griffin, as what's the point from their perspective? Nobody mentioned that Griffin is way cheaper, instead arguing he's more of a ticket-seller (debatable)

3. There was an actual roundtable argument over whether Griffin was better than Howard. I'll credit Goff for being on the sane side of the argument on this one.

Too much cliche still from Jason Goff, but I like hoops talk so it's a relatively minor concern.

In the early days of the Score HFC used to cover the NFL well and did a nice job on NCAAF. They had a stable of guests from across the country who would recap Sunday action and its results.

I think the station has decided to brand itself as all things chicago, after several years of renting national shows to fill up its less favored timeslots. I guess I understand as they are trying to be the anti ESPN but it is purposefully myopic.

Given that most of the Score's longform sports talk is based around our teams rather than their leagues--Bears talk, Bulls talk, Sox talk, Blackhawks trolling--the diffuse nature of college sports fandom here all but precludes giving any one of the 10, 11, 12 semi-local teams much play. There's not enough time on the speaking end or interest on the receiving end to give every team any sort of in-depth coverage remotely commensurate with what the pro teams get, so they're really quite limited in what they can do (namely, a weekly expert segment which I'm pretty sure is billable time). Local sports talk is their bread and butter, so why does anyone want to hear them talk at any great length about what Wisconsin football is up to? Honestly, you'll reach more Chicago sports fans (albeit the dumb, annoying, uber-Soxy-da-Bears-playd-it-Wrigley ones) by talking about the Packers.

Idk... I think Northwesterns perpetual mediocrity doesn't help as a bridge to college football in chicago... Most college football fans at least know their conference as well as their team... I think it should be talked about more on the score, but I don't think the producers/hosts know how to talk about it... Its really embarassing to me that the score is sooo anti college sports when the ncaa is a multi billion dollar corporation...

The most promotion college sports received in the decade I've listened to the score was the shameless ads for the first psu game after paterno was fired...

I said it in another thread, and I'll say it again: Chicago is not a football town, it's a Bears town. To the extent that this means Chicagolanders generally do not obsess over high school football like a bunch of latently pedophilic hillbillies, this is a very good thing indeed.

Minds need to be expanded in this part of the state... The actual games of college football have been far more aesthetically pleasing than anything I've seen outside of 6qtrs of great jay cutler this year... There are so many studs in college right now. The next 2 or 3 nfl drafts are gonna be deep.

I think there are a lot of alumni of many dif big ten schools in the city who are dying to have an alternative college football listen outside of the shitty espn broadcasting... I can see how you think it is only a bears town, if you are referencing the mediocrity that is chicago sports talk...

Agreed about the awkward high school fottball obsession thing...

It's certainly a Bears town. But it's more of an NFL town than you think. This is an NFL country if you look at the ratings for the games. Gambling and fantasy are a huge factor but it doesn't matter why people care. They do. It still means people want to talk about the NFL because they're watching it.

Monday & Sunday Night Football (Non Bears games) will have more Chicago viewers than any Bulls or Hawks regular season game.

Did you light up a smoke after posting this Bi11s? :P

I knew the studs thing wouldn't get by you... And yes, I was forced to smoke a blunt when I wanted to smoke a bubbler...

So Saturday football and gambling on Saturday football doesn't happen? Come on... Don't believe the BnB hype... Many people in this area of the country love college football as much or more than the nfl...

Sure. College football gambling is big. But fantasy isn't as big in college and that's why the NFL trumps college in Chicago. Not just Chicago but any major city. TV ratings would back me up.

Ok. Let's see the ratings, and fantasy football is the burritoest thing I've ever seen. Bunch of grown ass men running around talking about stat tracking when they should be, amongst other things, raising their kids better...
