Is it just me or is there very little content? A show about telling me how much you like baseball? I am not sure what I want from Barry and Spiegel but its not Spiegel saying how excited he is about baseball over and over...

Listening to Hit and Run with David Schuster on right now...

Has anyone ever noticed he says "everybody" as "eveybody"?

He also says "dint" for "didn't." Silvie does this too.

Maybe he's trying to buck the ever more popular "errrbody" trend.

isn't there a fundamental irony to a public airwaves radio show being someone's private fantasy?

Just because you love baseball doesn't mean you know anything about it. We've got a baseball "expert" who had never heard of Zoilo Versalles and didn't know Bunning threw his perfect game in '64. I respect Spiegel's passion for the game, but he gets a lot of shit wrong.

A guy that knew more could challenge guys like Kevin Goldstein when they say stupid shit. I understand that the current fashion is to fetishize the walk and the strikeout to a ridiculous degree. Interestingly enough, the SABRmetric view is that the strikeout is king for pitchers, and yet it is rather meaningless for hitters. How is that possible? Someone should tell Goldstein that soft-tossing left-handers have a winning record overall which is more than one can say for hard-throwing righties. But of course, W-L record doesn't mean anything. Unless you're trying to win a pennant.

I'm perfectly fine with Spiegel not knowing about a below average player who had 1 good season.

Nobody needs to know about him. Obviously you don't either since he had more than one good season. But you're not passing yourself off as a baseball expert in a major market either. I'm sure Buster Olney and Peter Gammons know who he is.

You're right. He had 2 good seasons.

And he's not passing himself off as an expert. He hosts a baseball show.

Actually, he had about five good seasons and he played the most important defensive position for what was considered the best team in baseball in '65 and '67. In the time he played a .700+ OPS for a shortstop was giant. But my point wasn't really to argue the relative merits of Zoilo Versalles.

He is passing himself off as an expert. When the Score began, it was fans (hosts) just talking to fans (callers). There wasn't an inequality in the relationship and that's what originally drove the station. But that has all changed with the Bernsteinization of the station. Now it's hosts talking down to callers. When Jason Goff talks hoops, he isn't taking part in a dialogue. He's lecturing like a professor. That's because he's an "expert". I'd have no problem with Speigel being wrong in a different context. But this is the way they've set up the station and given that, I believe my criticism to be fair.

So in your world Jonathan Hood is passing himself off as a baseball expert by having the temerity to host a baseball show?

Jesse Rogers and George Offman, baseball experts both?

I think not. I think they, along with Spiegel, are guys who like talking about baseball. Nothing more. Nothing less.

I dont mind the romaticizing of the game. I prefer a little of that to 3 hours of hang wringing over a wild card race and bad bullepn (for example)

I can't really speak to those guys since I never hear them. I never listened to "Hit and Run" much when Rogers and Offman were on. But I don't remember them having the kind of strong opinions that Spiegel does.

It's the tone of the host and the approach to callers that leads me to believe someone considers himself an expert. In the cases of Jason and Zawaski, the Score actually promotes them as "experts". Are you suggesting that "liking baseball" is the criteria for hosting a baseball show in Chicago? If so, I would hope you are wrong. But it seems you may be correct.

For me, that's all I care about from a host.

Get guests on for in-depth stuff.

As you said, Buster Olney and Peter Gammons are baseball experts. They're terrible when they've hosted shows in the past.

I guess where I see the difference is in the way the callers are handled. For example, you and I might disagree about Zoilo Versalles in this forum, but we're both just two dopes with opinions. If bigfan were to grant you the power to delete my posts and put you in a position where you had the upper hand, I would expect more from you.

And in the Score's bernstein era, it isn't enough to disagree with a caller. That caller must be ridiculed and humiliated to the Nth degree. I don't mind listening to that on occasion, but when you take that approach, you'd better be an expert.

You know he wants to log on and berate us like he does his inferiors at the Score.

That's why I respect Bernstein. Even though Meatpants is his inferior Bernstein still treats Meatpants with respect.

Does Spiegs really do that on Hit and Run though? I haven't heard it, although I haven't listened very much.

George used to do that all the time to callers.

Olney is really good on the radio. He's been awesome in the past filling in for Greenberg. I'd love to hear him with his own show. But yeah I'd imagine Peter Gammons would be a pretty terrible radio host these days, probably for the same reason Ernest Borgnine would be.
