I was just thinking about this and it really isn't relevant to anything, so it's perfect for a message board!

I really miss The Heavy Fuel Crew (for those of you who aren't aware, that's the duo of Dan McNeil and Terry Boers back when they hosted the afternoon show on SCR)... not only did they have great chemistry and take no prisoners attitude, but they had some of the best callers... ever!

Some were incredibly sharp and witty, while others were so ridiculous it was equally entertaining. Below is my list of some of my favorite all-time callers and "Who You Crappers"...not in any particular order, if some of you know their whereabouts, please chime in.

Baby Zenner
Westside Bobby
Jason from Evanston (a.k.a. Jason Goff)
La Grange Park Mark
Raphie (RIP)
Cheesestache

Does anybody know how and when Raffy died? I still can't believe he's gone. I didn't know him personally, but met him at a couple of remotes.

I always thought it was Raffe who owns Raffes Record Riot at Cicero & Montrose.

I used to like listening on holidays on my way to different houses. I would always think "who has so little to do that they would call on christmas day". Sure enough a Wild Bill would pop up.

I got four:

Jock Itch Mitch - Good non-sports conversations.
Bichiro - I loved his WYC calls.
Northside Pimp - Dude was funny as hell.
Caller Chuck - What the hell was he talking about?

Bichiro checked into WYC a couple of months ago. That was a nice surprise.

Awesome. I wish I could've heard.

On a side note, I always thought Bichiro and Northside Pimp were the same guy.

Hey Kid, good call on Caller Chuck, I forgot to add him to my list! Although, I think his moniker was Chuck from the Northside, but I could be wrong. Some on his calls to those Monday Night Bears talk were classic!

I might be in the minority, but I also miss the segment "ask Rusty" with Rusty from Stickney, talk about ignorance is bliss!

Neil from Northlake was great in getting Ditka riled up. I don't know if that was his only trick but he did that well.

I think Rusty is fake, too, but who cares? That bit was one of the all-time greats in Score history. B&B made a mistake when they dropped him from their programming.

It's been several years since Rafi passed. :( It is generally accepted by the old gang that he took his own life. Rafi did not own a record store. He spent a lot of time trying to break into radio. He was one of the most knowledgable guys with regard to sports I've ever known. I spent many hours on the phone chatting up sports w/him. But he was a troubled man. Had he been a little smoother around the edges he would have had a chance at a radio career. He had tremendous presence on air. But he really could rub people the wrong way. Especially guys with decision making power.

Mad trucker or Rocko

2 Great callers.

Just takes too long to HOLD nowadays

Way too much 'alleged production'

In the early days of sports talk radio, the shows were driven by the callers, as all of you have duly noted. Now, the shows are personality/host driven. The callers are simply vehicles to enable the hosts to do their schtick. Example--putting a guy on that B&B can obviously ridicule because he's not well-spoken or because what he's going to say isn't well thought-out. That plays into their hands and they run with it. The game has changed, boys and girls. This isn't just, "Here's Joe from Elk Grove with what he thinks about Rex Grossman, what do you think?" anymore. This is, "Here, Mr. Host, we're paying you multi-hundred thousands in a competitive market--drive this show and make it happen without waiting for a funny call from Wild Bill."
