That's what veteran radio host Mike North is now that he will join the Daily Herald as a twice-weekly columnist and thrice-weekly video producer starting June 19.

“I'm extremely pumped up,” North said. “The Daily Herald has been my favorite paper for the past 20 years. I remember Mike Murphy telling me about this paper called the Daily Herald back in 1992 when I started at The Score.

“I had been living in the city and then I got to know most people there and had them on the air, like Mike Imrem and Barry Rozner. And now to have the opportunity to work with the Daily Herald and try to make it an even better newspaper than it already is, it's a dream come true.”

But ...

“But it's a challenge,” North admitted. “I'm excited about it, but I know I have to do a good job.”

The recipient of numerous awards, including two Chicago Emmy Awards and four Achievement in Radio honors, North is a host on Fox Sports Radio, where he brings his lively brand of conversation and knowledge about sports to fans.

He was the co-host of the popular “Monsters in the Morning” with former Bears offensive lineman Dan Jiggetts, and was a sports talk radio show host at The Score, WSCR 670-AM in Chicago.

North's first column is scheduled to appear in the Sports section on June 19, followed by his sports commentary videos. His columns will be published Tuesdays and Fridays, and his three weekly sports videos will be carried at dailyherald.com each Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

“We're happy to add Mike to the growing mix of voices sparking provocative sports conversation on our print and digital pages,” said John Lampinen, Senior Vice President and Editor. “Opinionated, engaging, sometimes controversial, he's a big kid at heart and he reflects the fans' point of view as well as any personality in town. We think he'll add to the fun of being a sports fan.”

His first deadline is now just weeks away, and North says he can't wait.

“I'm going to be involved Monday through Friday and I'm jacked about it,” North said. “I really want to thank the Daily Herald for giving me a great opportunity.

“For me to say I'm a columnist for the Daily Herald is a very proud day,” he said. “My father would've been very proud. He'd say I'm finally legit.”

The Daily Herald has really beefed up its sports writers. I am not a Mike North fan, but we have Len Kasper, Ranger, Meatpants, and now North all while keeping the existing folks. It gives me more reasons to keep paying my $24.80 monthly subscription.

That article in the daily herald is classic. It's probably a glitch, but for me it only shows the section that it's in the first post, and then the rest of the article is just a bunch of hyphens.

I really dont care what any radio hosts needs to type. They have 4 hours a day to talk and if they cant get it out in that time, tough crap.

We know it is done to try and get people to read the paper when the host talks about it on the air, but I just wont buy a paper to read what any of them wrote.

I said it years ago when North still had a show and a section on this board, but for all the hating that people do on him the guy is resourceful and always finds a way to get himself back out there. So many people would take pleasure in him just going away, but he doesn't. He won't. Say what you want about him (I'm personally not a fan either), but he's a go-getter. Mike North makes things happen for himself.

People wanted the Webio thing to ruin him forever. It didn't. I'll give him credit for hanging in there and continuing to find work. I know people don't want to hear that, but it's true. It almost makes me want to root for him to persevere.

No his ego did that. Compared to what he had while at the score compared to what he has now, huge difference and that is 100% on him. After being bad for 5 years straight, he thought that deserved another big payday, which he could have had, but he turned it down, no takers after that at that price tag, not even less the a 1/4 of the price tag, he is making peanuts compared to what he was hauling in and that's fine, I dont care, but where he is today, the failure after failure, that's on him but of course he always blamed someone else, easier that way, says a lot about someones character. If he is at the Herald for the next 20 years and wins awards, great, but it doesn't take away from the fact that he killed his radio career.

what the hell is a daily herald?

Yes. He should take great pride in always finding new ways to fail miserably.
